Imperia chateau / country house description
Where else in the world but the Western Liguria, can you be thirty minutes from the beaches of Imperia and fourty minutes from the snow mountains? A more magical vacation spot, in the village of Ponti of the hilltown of Pornassio, would be hard to find.
Would you like to be seriously off the beaten track, in an enchanted valley where you can hike, think, write, draw and swim on the coast?
I have been rebuilding my group of four, three hundred year old, stone houses, for the past decade, to give them the most modern, colorful, well light spaces using the most natural materials. The structures are situated around a small courtyard under a majestic archway.
The Wisteria house, is laid out on three levels. It includes a large kitchen/dining room that seats eight and leads out to the terrace, a cathedral living room with a fireplace, adjoining an outdoor patio with a barbecue. The house has three master bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and ample privacy. One is a master suite with its personal living room and small panoramic terrace; one is the romantic upper bedroom with huge picture windows looking South to the night sky and full moon, and one is a double bedroom with twin beds, on the ground level adjoining the strawberry garden. There is also an office/den with a loft bed, and a central located large bathroom for the comunity. The furnishings are not artificially lavish, but well planned and elegant.
The property is located at the highest point of the village of Ponti di Pornassio, from wence the wonderful views. Therefore upon arriving one must park at the entrance to the village on the state road, and WALK, following its main street, built originally for undernourished donkeys and not quite wide enough for a large car. You will cross over two historic bridges, (from which the name of the hamlet derives) and then up a hundred and fourty yards to my property. For this reason it is advisable to bring light weight suitcases or those on wheels. The house is laid out on many levels, which adds greatly to its archtectural interest. But I have noted that not all vacationers are accustomed to STAIRS, or have the knees equipped for them.
As part of my effort to create a positive distance from daily life, the house is NOT equipped with television sets, (those of the city are more than sufficient). However if you would like to use the internet, the computer is at your disposal.
Due to the steep terraces and various stairs the property is not recommended for children under five.
I live in the highest house of the four, and am in the process of putting the finishing touches on the two houses, called Mint and Lavander, on the other side of the archway.
The property faces a huge regional forest, an environmental preserve for wild boars, weasels, foxes, and an occasional eagle. There are many ancient pathways and mule trails through the woods for hiking in the immediate area. Driving ten miles to the North, one is in the midst of the alpine pastures of the Alpi Maritimi at 1600 meters; sixteen miles to the South one is at the beaches of Imperia. The town of Pieve di Teco, three miles down the road on State highway 28, has all of the stores imaginable for one’s daily needs, including splendid bakeries and excellent restaurants.
The valley of Imperia is the home of the Mediteranean diet; the culinary specialties of the area include wines, D.O.C. Ormeasco, some of the best olive oil in the world, porcini mushrooms, wonderful cheeses and of course ‘handcrafted’ fruits and vegetables. Pieve di Teco is on its way to becoming the slow food /locavore capital of the Western Liguria. The property is a pleasant temperature in the summer, in contrast to the very high temperatures of the actual coast.
A bit of the history of the property's name:
Once upon a time there was a horse on the merry-go-round, who had lived a long and industrious life, carrying thousand of children round and round, counterclockwise, all in the course of his career.
When his luna-park was dismantled, no one had thought about the future of the beautifully carved aminals who had sustained it. They had not foreseen that wooden horses could be put out to pasture. In any case, this horse did not aspire to green pastures, but rather to the starlit canopy sky of the amusement park where he was lodged.
I found it shortly after it had been abandoned, and gave it wings, so that it might put its dream into action. It is not exactly a bonafide Pegasus of mythological fame. It is still a wooden horse that is just starting to use its new found wings. however in the nights when the moon is nearly full, one can see it straining to take off into the sky from the highest terrace of my small neighborhood, in search of a distant star....I hope you will enjoy its company.

Year Purchased: 1995
About the owner: I was born a while ago and have been fumbling around with words, images and architectural structures, ever since. Actually I began I career in satire at an early age, as the daughter of my father, a mystical, solid state physicist and my mother, whose desire to administer the universe better than Napoleon would have done, was only hampered by her small army of one husband and two children. . My parents sent me to various prestigious institutions, in their hopes that I would do something ‘productive’ my life. But we were never quite able to agree on a definition for that word. In the 1960’s I worked in New York, as a scene painter, a theatre photographer, and creator of animated films. By the end of that magical decade I had made my own life ridiculous enough to gather much material for an autobiography; thus armed I moved on to San Francisco. There I was one of the founders of the first and largest urban community: PROJECT ONE, an eighty thousand square foot warehouse, rebuilt into housing and work environments for a hundred and fifty people. In this manner I perfected my skills as a lady contractor and building artisan. The efforts of the creators of this community essentially gave birth to the South of Market neighborhood. During those years I wrote and illustrated various books and directed an independent feature film. Such efforts surpassed my wildest dreams at creating scandals, while skirting my more modest goal of creating a bank account. In 1977 I moved to Italy, where my book about visual perception and the environment: La Giraffa nel Tranvai, was published by Armando Editore. I continued to write, rebuild ancient stone houses, design software for computer animation and make films. My most recent book, La Pianta Stradale della Terra Promessa/Roadmap of the Promised Land, about my experiences in San Francisco in the seventies, was published in Italian in 2006 by Edizioni Angolo Manzoni.
Why the Owner Chose Imperia:
I came to this area many years ago, and stayed. The light filtering through the olive groves, the color of the sea in December, the hills embroidered with vegetable gardens, the stone paths through the woods, the scent of the lemon trees in flower: it seemed the right place to be.
The Unique Benefits at this Chateau / Country House:
The strawberries bloom from April to November. The fruit trees produce jam for many friends. The airports of Nice and Genoa are not far away. The scent of the olive wood burning in the fireplace is inebriating. The moon shines through the bedroom windows at just the right angle. When it snows the mountains to the North are bright pink at dawn. My most industrious rose bush is nearly twelve feet high.
