This is it, Folks! See the stories in the Coastal Living, Jacksonville magazine & Gainesville magazines here! Come vacation in a treasure of Summer Haven history. This 110 year old cottage is located 50 steps from the Atlantic Ocean and directly on the Summer Haven River. Five bedrooms, a great room with fireplace, two bathrooms - one with an original claw-footed tub - large family kitchen, pantry, laundry, dining porch, a dock and porches all around.

Send your thanks back in time. Your stay at The Lodge, a 19th century beach cottage near gorgeous St. Augustine, promises a historic and redefining simplicity. A few days here means renewed sense of ‘the important things in life’, chock-full of familial magic. Tucked on a sleepy cul de saq next to the Altantic Ocean, The Lodge and its older sister The Hut are elegant and understated reminders of a far-away time.

An area known as Summer Haven was recommended to stressed Pennsylvania banking baron, Thomas Mellon, for its restorative powers. Construction on first The Hut and then The Lodge began in the 1880s, at a time when Chester Arthur was president and Mark Twain was busy finishing his Adventures of Huck Finn. This is seriously good quality time, where simple, beautiful touches - candle light and ocean breezes - complete the setting.

A house with this much history begs for a multi-generational vacation where the stories come out - as family folklore enjoys another airing. Take the time on this holiday to hear the stories you’d never otherwise have chance to hear. Reconnect with grown cousins or childhood friends - covering more ground than you ever would in a hasty holiday card.

Whip up beloved family meals - packing your grandmother’s handwritten recipes for a birthday cake made from scratch. Snap dozens of photos as Grandpa teaches the next generation to fish. Try this more genuine of magic kingdoms for real family bonding, in surrounds so idyllic they look like a movie set. Adirondack chairs await on the wrap-around porch, where palm trees dot the view of stone breakers just beyond. Liberal touches of antiquity, such as the front porch’s restored pew bench, leave room to wonder what the walls would say - if they could talk. A private dock is charming and ramshackle, perhaps Huck-Finn-comes-to-Florida. (Dock is to shallow water due to sand bars.)

Up to ten guests can comfortably stretch out over 1,200 square feet. Five double occupancy bedrooms, four queen beds and two bunks, share two bathrooms. An equipped kitchen, dining porch and a living area each honor the old with family heirloom accessories and new, comfy furniture appropriate to the period.

The house boasts recent refurbishment across every inch - yet maintains all original features. Solid pine floors and old glass windows. A claw-footed porcelain bathtub and a pyramid roof for extra air circulation. Instead of closets, enjoy simple wall hooks to keep your clothing organized - and relish in a vacation that requires only a parade of shorts, t-shirts, bathing suit and towel (repeat).

For modern conveniences, enjoy phones and cable TV. If you’d rather do without, they can stay easily tucked out of sight.

Past guests love the inclusive aspect their vacations can take, thanks to the home’s single-storey plan. Older relatives who struggle with mobility will enjoy a property that has everything to hand. The ocean, just 100 feet away, can be seen, heard - and tasted- from within The Lodge itself.

Note: Summer Haven is constantly changing with nature. The SummerHaven river behind the house is largely a sand dune and can many times provide beach access. Due to Tropical Storm Faye erosion at the front, there is now an area of large boulders blocking the beach access points. Although you can walk in between these boulders to access the beach like the locals that live near by, the nearest easy beach access is approximately 1 mile north at Fort Mantanzas National Park. It has (free) paved parking and provides beach access via a meandering boardwalk.

I was disappointed that this was not actually a beach front property. We had to go out the door, around thru the sand river and then to the ocean. The river behind the house is completely gone, leaving only sand and the ocean in front is blocked with enormous stones that cannot be climbed. That said, you can get to the ocean around the bend. The bedroom are small and the twin bedded room is bunk beds and the room is minute. We enjoyed the fireplace and the kitchen was well furnished. Place was not very well dusted, but we did enjoy our stay regardless, although we will look for a different property for next year.

Owner response: Hi Nancy - Thank you for taking the time to share this information with us. As we discuss on the web site, the beach and river at Summer Haven are constantly changing. The river is now a huge sand bar with access to the beach. We appreciate the feedback, and we hope that you will consider renting from us again next time. I'd like to offer you a coupon good for 10% off your next stay. This is my 5th time in a Beach Cottages/VPRO property, and I was really disappointed. The house is charming, the beds comfortable, the kitchen sunny and pleasant, but in a world where "presentation is everything," your property manager needs to get his act together. A smashed gate, broken mailbox, ripped screen door and two dead trees lying in the yard greeted me upon arrival. Broken fencing lying in yard, random wood pieces, plastic forks, red drink cups, tattered welcome mat, etc. Inside, the house was clean at a glance, but cobwebs and dustballs coated all textile wall hangings, elk head, fireplace screen, floor vents and corners. Dead lovebugs in many corners. BBQ grill didn't work. No ice in the freezer upon arrival. Not worth the outrageous cleaning and "amenity" fees. I love older properties with character, but the need occasional deep cleaning and to be in better repair. I left The Lodge much cleaner than I found it, despite the terrible vacuum cleaner that sprays more dust than it takes in. I didn't call the property manager because I was so insulted that I would have to point out so many - and such obvious - deficiencies. It would have made my vacation even less pleasant to have to deal with all of that! The location has a view of road construction behind the property and a dried up river. The view down the road has an ugly "road closed" sign. You can't see the ocean from the house at all except from the kitchen window, which had random wood posts leaning in front of it. Last year, The Hut property next door had many similar deficiences inside and out, though it was cleaner.

The property is represented as something it is is very tattered, tiny bedrooms, awful location due to silted river. As our guest commented, there is old an charming and then there is just old and dilapidated. I spent a lot of time and effort to plan this
special week-end. It was a disaster. Three of our 9 family members just left altogether (allergies) and all of us left a day early. I really feel ripped off/ Sorry

Property was found to be smelling of rot, the yard was full of garbage, the bbq pit wasn't cleaned, the trash cans had no lids, the ac wasn't working properly, the mosquito nets were torn, etc. etc. We have been overcharged for this property and will not
recommend it to friends. Nor will we recommend the VacPros company recommend to anyone.

This was our second time staying at the Lodge. Love the location. Some days you have the whole beach to yourselves. Love the charm of the Lodge, however it is not for everyone. The house is very old so you have to expect some quirks. Found it to be cleaner this year than last, however there was a problem with mice this year. The property manager was excellent. Any complaints we had he was right there to correct them. The furnishings in the Lodge are nearing their end and are a little shabby. I think if they would just freshen up the interior furnishings it would be an awesome place to stay. Definitely would go back.

This home made a wonderful vacation. The beach was a private beach so there was us and maybe 3-5 other families on the beach. It was very easy to get to town to eat or to get some more groceries. The only negative thing about this house is that the beach is imediatly across the street, but you cant get to it because of the massive rocks that seperate you. But it is a very short walk (less than 50 steps) to get to the beach. This wasnt a big deal except for that my mother had a hurt knee and the path down to the beach is a bit steep for someone with a hurt knee so she had to spend most of the vacatin at the house. But really the beach itself was worth the short walk. Beautiful beach, nice home, and a wonderful vacation all together.

The old Lodge was the character we were looking for. Steeped in history and reminiscent of old Florida living.
We can see that the Lodge would not be for everyone, but we found it charming.
Sorry to see the river is no longer flowing in the back yard. This must break the owners hearts. The over all location is great for spending time at the beach with friends and family.

Had a good time with family in a charming old Lodge. But the house definitely needed maintenance and the river behind was no longer. We did feel we were misled by the advertising that said it was on the river???

About the owner: My name is Steve Milo and I stay in Vacation Rental Homes when I travel both domestically and abroad. I own several vacation rental homes and listen carefully to our guests and their feedback! Our greatest compliment is when our guests refer our web site to their friends and relatives. AND, now I am managing other people's properties in St Augustine Beach, Daytona Beach, Palm Coast and Ponte Vedra Beach. Our guests and their great 'word of mouth' have helped us expand to over 500+ vacation rentals. We booked over 10,000 rentals and received over 3,000 guest reviews in 2011. You can find some of these by going to search engines and typing in Steve Milo or 'Vacation Rental Pros' . Thank you!

Why the Owner Chose Private Homes:
And the best part of it all is the location. You're within a short car ride of historic downtown St. Augustine, the oldest city in America filled with pedestrian walkways with shops, cafes and first class restaurants. We are also close to Daytona Beach and the Daytona speedway and museum. We are also only a 1 1/2 hour drive to Orlando and Disney World/Universal/Sea World as well as 1 1/2 hour to the Kennedy Space Center. Our rental is also a short car ride to Ponte Vedra Beach and PGA golf Course and TPC as well as Jacksonville with the brand new St John's Town Center (with a Costco), Avenue Mall and River Front Arcade. There is also a minor league baseball team and a professional football team and stadium.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The beach is wide and unspoiled here by large crowds. Kids will spend hours exploring, and their parents and grandparents will love discovering new areas to relax and reconnect If you're ready for uncrowded beaches, balmy weather, clear skies, and Florida's natural wildlife, come visit us today!
