A comfortable, well-located loft apartment
A comfortable, well-located loft apartment
In Spring 2013, my wife and I fled the snowy East Coast to rent this modern loft-style condo unit. The unit is sunny, attractively furnished, and very well located for city dwellers. The unit is very well equipped – from appliances to staple supplies – and everything worked. The owner was prompt, cheerful and easy to work with. New to this spacious city, we used car, trolley, bus and (mostly) plain old shoe leather to explore both the touristy-greatest-hits and some areas and sites more frequented by “California natives”. Beyond the crowded GasLamp district and the weekly throngs of conventioneers, there are good dining choices, interesting shops, pleasant neighborhoods. Formerly an area of warehouses and small industrial buildings, the East Village is booming with new high-rises, new shops and services, and new arrivals, amidst some of the earlier stuff. We found good grocers, farmers markets, -- most everything except bookstore/newsstands – very nearby. Bagels – 1 minute away. Starbucks – 2 minutes away.

Owner response: Hi Bill & Linda! Thank you so much for the thoughtful and wonderful review! I am so glad you enjoyed my place and that you discovered so many fun places to see and explore! I loved how you described your walking shoes too, that is so great! You were wonderful guests to have and it sounds like you really had a great time! I am sure Hawaii was also a delight! I was able to rent it to the people that you so graciously let me show it too and this will enable me to keep my place so thank you again for that! I am hoping to make it a VRBO again in the future and perhaps we can cross paths if you visit SD again. Thanks again for the stellar review and take good care! Sincerely, Stacy Looney PS - I will be sending you your deposit back this week!! Sorry that I am behind on that.
When finding a place to stay, it's all about location! This was by far the best location in East Village. Starbucks was just around the corner. Basic, the best pizza lounge in town was just a block down. The supermarket was also 1-2 blocks down. The restaurants/bars were also a few blocks down. The best part was the fact that we had 2 underground parking spaces (although we barely used the car). The condo itself had the best location because it is a corner unit so you can people watch or just relax on the patio. The condo was clean, modern and had all the necessities for a little getaway (i.e. wi-fi, ipod/iphone dock, laundry detergent etc). I've rented a lot of vacation properties and by far, Stacy has been one of the sweetest owners I've come across. She was reachable, extremely accomodating and very informative - which made it an easy, fun and incredible stay! I would definitely rent from Stacy again and I would definitely stay at this condo again.

Urban, chic and comfortable
Urban, chic and comfortable
This is the ultimate urban location to explore the city of San Diego. The condo is spacious, with floor to ceiling windows on three sides to relax and enjoy the city streets. Close to grocery stores, restaurants, the trolley and bus connections, yet a quiet space to retreat. Lovely linens, well set-up kitchen, comfortable seating, Flat screen television and wi-fi. Great bagels and coffee just a floor below, although a coffee grinder and maker is provided. Owner was very accommodating and prompt in making arrangements. We will definitely return!

Extended Stay in Summer, Fall, & Winter
Extended Stay in Summer, Fall, & Winter
We stayed at this condo from June 2012 through January 2013, while my husband worked at the Navy base on Coronado. The condo is beautiful and in a wonderful part of downtown. During the Padres season, it was so easy to walk down the block to catch a game or just watch a snippet of the fireworks from the balcony. The waterfront/Embarcadero is only a 15 minute walk and you can catch the Coronado Ferry from there or walk all the way down to Seaport Village. There's also a trolley stop about a block away, which was nice when we wanted to go to Old Town for margaritas! Being five blocks from Gaslamp, we were still able to escape the 'party' atmosphere of the weekends or join in without having to battle for parking spots. The location is also stellar for driving, it was easy to get on all of the major highways and traffic was only an issue around 5:30pm - pretty standard. This place was set up really nicely for us, but we did have a few small issues. If you plan to do a lot of home cooking, I would say that the kitchen was lacking in supplies. I love to bake and it was little disheartening when we had to buy foil cake/loaf pans. As a vacation rental, I would never assume these would available, but we were staying for so long that I wish I had brought a few more things from home. Just something to keep in mind if you're planning an extended stay. The kitchen supplies would be great for a short-term vacation, but you may need to supplement them for a longer term . We also had some issues with the windows. It's a double-edged sword, because they're great for the view and for making the condo feel open and alive, but they make the condo very hot! We had some problems during the summer months when it was getting into the high 80s and 90s inside the condo and the AC had to be on all the time. We ended up having to pay more out of pocket, which was unexpected and, we felt, could have been handled a little bit better. I believe the rental terms have been altered since our stay. If you're planning to rent in those hot months, I would make sure that your lease/agreement spells out all issues relating to electricity and that you're on the same page as Stacy. As for our overall experience, with the exception of the electricity and some personal quibbles with the kitchen, we loved staying in this condo. I would definitely recommend it. Stacy was available for questions and, for the most part, kept things running smoothly for us.

Owner response: Hi Arianna! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this great review. I am happy that you enjoyed the condo for your stay and I really appreciate you describing the areas that you enjoyed and your overall experience there. That helps give people a good picture of the area and how convenient it is. I didn't realize you were a baker and since I am not I can understand where my kitchen was lacking in supplies. I appreciate that honest feed back. Regarding the AC, I heard it was a crazy hot summer which either of us was prepared for and I have made those adjustments for next time. If I could afford to get blinds all the way to the ceiling, I think that would also help quite a bit. I hope you made it back safely and are enjoying the comforts of your own home. I will be sending your deposit back this week along with the mail I collected. Thanks again and take good care!! Stacy

Very Helpful Owner
While the condo ended up not being available for the periods we needed, the owner, Stacy, surprised me with her efforts to try and find us another unit. She put us in touch with the owner of another unit in her same building. Both Stacy and the other owner showed genuine interest in helping us in our search for our summer rental in downtown San Diego. Above and beyond the call of duty is how I saw it!!!

About the owner: I have been in commercial real estate for 11 years and have had the opportunity to work and live all over San Diego. Downtown has been my favorite for many of the reasons I listed above. I have loved being able to park my car for the weekend and walk everywhere! One of my favorite things to do is have my friends over for a glass of wine on the patio as we watch the sunsets and interact with our neighbors who are often walking by. The location of this condo is amazing simply because it affords you all the desires of city living that you would expect and wish for. From the conveniences of many restaurants, shopping, entertainment, ball games, concerts, and much much more!!
Why the Owner Chose East Village:
I have lived in four areas of San Diego and the primary reason this location is ideal for a vacation rental is that downtown is one of the few areas that offers a 'no car necessary' to get to many local attractions. San Diego is very linear and requires a lot of driving from one area to the next. Here in the East Village, you can get around with out a car. And if you need one, there is a Car2Go location one block away that offers a Smart Car rental by the hour!! The other options are taxi, bus, or trolley, also easily accessible.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
The main attraction besides the great feel that this loft style condo offers, is the access to many fun venus and local hang outs. You can get a bagel downstairs at Brooklyn Bagel, or a Starbucks coffee on the other corner of the building. There is a Hotel Indigo next door with spectacular views of Petco Park and there are several options for restaurants in every direction. There is also an Albertsons only 3 blocks away.
