This was our fifth stay at Alla Collina with a group of friends, but our first visit in September. I can't say enough about it! The weather was spectacular. We were able to eat breakfast on the veranda overlooking the countryside with Todi perched on the top of the hill in the distance. We cooked meals daily (either breakfast, lunch or dinner). The villa has everything you could ask for - comfortable beds and linens, a perfect kitchen with every appliance and tool you need, a notebook for guests recommending local sites, markets, restaurants, etc., plus suggested itineraries in the surrounding area. And at night we had cut-throat billiards and ping pong competitions in the game room! Do yourself and favor and book a stay at this wonderful villa today!

La Collina is an extraordinary place, exuding unspeakable beauty, drenched in the genuine spirit and geography of Umbria, and as hospitable and welcoming as Italians themselves. The landscape, which is totally accessible, is riddled with flora of every variety including fruit trees and a working vineyard and olive grove. Every corner of the wondrous villa is designed to make the visitor feel comfortable and a part of this lovely corner of the world. It is beautiful, grand, and full of the warmth of the region, a true inspiration.

The Gasparini Family's villa east of Todi is truly breathtaking; the view of Todi, a 1000-year-old medieval hill town, is spectacular. The gorgeous stone villa is surrounded by olive groves, grapevines, sunflowers and lavender bushes, but has all the modern comforts, including a swimming pool. Within a 40 minute drive are the gorgeous towns of Assisi, Orvieto and Spoleto, but honestly, my favorite town is Todi, just 5 minutes way, because it has almost no tourists at all.

This is my fourth time staying at this luxury villa and each time I bring a group of painters with me. I have stayed prior in Tuscany yet everyone feels this location and villa is extraordinary. It is kept immaculate, the scenery is breathtaking and the owners are a gracious and wonderful couple. The photos can not do the place justice. I will bring my group here again.

A college friends reunion
The grounds around the house are magnificent, with breathtaking views of Todi and the surrounding countryside typical of Umbria. In addition to the beautiful landscaping and gardens on the property... For the next five days..... we traveled locally, visiting Todi, Orvieto, Deruta, Assisi and other hill towns in Umbria. We feasted on outstanding meals in local restaurants and trattorie, but none were as memorable as the meals that we prepared at home after shopping for food in the local markets..

Alla Collina is right in the middle of dozens of fabulous medieval hilltop towns, lots of Roman and Etruscan ruins, plenty of museums and great shopping (pottery, fabrics, wine, olive oil, food). In summer, the Perugia music festival is all around you -- every town seems to have concerts of all types (including Monte Castello di Vibio, home of the smallest La Scalla style theater in the world.) You never have to go far to find something to do or see -- 20 minutes to an hour at most...

The villa is a dream come true. Everything about the property was perfect for us -- from the huge, well-equipped kitchen with views over the hills and the outdoor organic garden, to the comfortable living areas, entertaining game room and large, spacious bedrooms with comforters and pillows you could disappear into. There is one bedroom downstairs and the other three are upstairs -- one with its own little balcony off the bathroom, and all spacious and quiet with views from every window and shu

I can't tell you how much we enjoyed La Collina
I can't tell you how much we all enjoyed Alla Collina. Everything about the week that we spent there was perfect. As you may recall, our group of fourteen extended family members ranged in age from nineteen months to eighty years. And the setting was ideal for everyone's varied interests. You obviously are aware of how spectacular the surrounding landscape is, but if you haven't stayed there yourself, you should know that the main and guest houses are both extremely comfortable. About the owner: We are an Italian husband/American wife who have restored the villa in a traditional Umbrian style with the assistance of a local professional expert in restoration. Though ancient beams, mellow chestnut wood doors and recuperated terracotta floors were lovingly restored and/or replaced, the villa has been insulated, plumbed and wired using the most modern techniques. The result is comfortable and very practical. The old house is sited on a hillside in such a way as to enjoy cool breezes all summer. The pool was designed by a dedicated lap swimmer and has its waterfall border overlooking one of the most beautiful open views in Umbria.
Why the Owner Chose Todi:
We chose the Todi area because of its lovely medieval character and because of its convenience to both Rome and Florence. Extended family lives in Rome. People describe Umbria as a place you can still savor the ‘real’ Italy. It is much less visited and ‘touristy’ than Tuscany. It is somewhat more rural and more native. For example, most restaurants offer only homemade pasta, bread, local wines, local oil, locally grown meats. Often there is truly a granny in the kitchen and the kids of all ages may be the servers. Not that food is everything but you do get really good food here. Not everyone speaks English. People are still quite interested in visitors. It is a living, working Italian area and though there are growing numbers of visitors it is not primarily a tourist destination. We also absolutely fell in love with the gentle and spectacularly beautiful views from the property. The Villa is surrounded by olive groves, we maintain a small vineyard, fruit trees and an organic vegetable garden with produce for guests' use. the landscaping is typical for farmhouses of this area and consists of mostly rosemary, lavender, roses, and other herbs such as sage. One of our favorite features is the old cottonwood 'whispering tree' in front of the loggia that has leaves that rustle in the most relaxing soft murmur when the breeze blows which is most of the time. Local visitors call it 'l'albero sussurrante' which simply means tree that whispers. The natural beauty has meant we have hosted a number of painting workshops with master painters who have come with students for a week. In 2012 we will host a painting and a photography workshop.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
We love the quiet rural setting, having breakfast on the loggia and catching sight of a pheasant or two scurrying from under a bush and taking flight. We love to swim and relax by the pool. We also enjoy preparing meals using fresh salads from the garden, our own olive oil, and we often cook outside on the grill. Local restaurants are terrific. We have prepared a house book which describes and gives directions and contact numbers for our favorities. The house book will describe every feature of the house and gives information such as on local doctors who will make a house call, local church service times, markets, and so forth. Clara or our representative, Susan, can help with everything, too. Both are local. We very often take a long walk each day. The house is on the 'beautiful italy' road circuit and the walks can either be fairly flat or can be hilly and mildly challenging. For example, just head off down the drive and go left up past the tiny hamlet at the top of the hill to arrive at a coffee bar a vigorous one mile away. If you go into the olive grove on the property and duck to the right into an unpaved tractor path with canopy trees you will arrive at a ‘strada bianca’ white gravel road. You go left and after about ½ mile left again you will be back on the asphalt road making a circle to the villa entrance gate. This will take about 45 minutes. Maps in the house or at the Todi tourist office will give you many adventurous ideas for walks. In easy touring distance of historic Umbrian hilltowns, there are plenty of music, art and gastronomic festivals and events. Umbria Jazz in july in Perugia is very special (Santana, Sly and the Family Stone, last couple of years, for example.). Going south we can visit the Festival at Spoleto which is very near. Many small towns such as Amelia or Bevagna or Narni have medieval events-food-pagents-horse races in costume- in late June.
