This exceedingly charming cottage on a wooded hilltop just outside of Brownsville has great views of Mt Ascutney and a burbling brook at the base of the hill. The historic converted early 1800's one room school house is filled with many antique furnishings. Hanging in the stairway are photographs of the house when it was the Hammond Hill School, with its teacher and her students. Enjoy the coziness of a gas fireplace in the living room or a wood fire in the chiminea on the deck. The cottage features a fully equipped and outfitted kitchen. Both bedrooms are upstairs, the master with a queen size bed and the second bedroom with a full-size double bed. All bed and bath linens are supplied.
Mt. Ascutney, only 5 minutes away, with opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, snow shoeing or cross country skiing. There is easy access to the VAST trail network for snowmobiling, cross country skiing or snow shoeing. Mountain bikers will find some of the best single track trails in New England. Miles of great trails are accessible right from the house.
Ascutney Mountain Resort has many amenities including shops for ski equipment and an outfitter with kayak and bicycle rentals. There is a full restaurant and bar available in the main lodge. In addition, the resort has outdoor tennis courts and a heated indoor swimming pool with an adjacent fitness room. There are several ski mountains in the area including Okemo, Killington, Suicide 6, Pico and Sunapee. For you golfers, there are 5 courses only 15 to 45 minutes away.
The village of Woodstock, about 25 minutes from Brownsville is known world-wide for its artisans, its artists, and the galleries that show their works. It is also home to the Billings Farm, the Woodstock Inn and the Rockefeller Woodstock Resort. Nearby is the Green Mountain Horse Association in South Woodstock.
Close to Woodstock is the Village of Quechee where you’ll find the famous glass works factory of Simon Pearce with its retail shop of glassware and wonderful restaurant.
Nearby on the Connecticut river is the Cornish Art Colony with the home of Augustus Saint-Gaudens and the Maxfield Parrish museum.
There really is something for everyone any time of year!

From the moment you pull up to this quaint hilltop cottage, it pleases. Set on top of a hill with beautiful views from the deck, we were just as thrilled with the interior. The cottage is very well maintained, tastefully decorated and offers every household amenity we needed. My husband and I stayed here for the weekend with another couple. It was comfortable and warm and incredibly relaxing. Not to mention centrally located for access to several mountains and attractions. We look forward to returning again and again for either cozy winter nights or summer nights under the stars on the deck!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

My husband and I stayed in the cottage for a long weekend over Christmas, and we had an excellent experience. The home is very comfortable and has been well-cared for. The kitchen is fully stocked with cooking utensils, pots, pans, dishes, etc. We made several meals here and never found it to be lacking anything. The owner also has an impressive record collection including many jazz and classical favorites. The neighbors were very friendly and offered to lend a hand if we needed anything. We visited the nearby Skunk Hollow Tavern for dinner, hiked to the summit of Mt. Ascutney and spent an afternoon in nearby Woodstock- all within a short drive. With all of the nearby amenities, the cottage is great for a small family or couples any time of the year.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

We had an absolutely delightful stay in this cottage situated in a beautiful mountain setting in Vermont. We found a gem in this vacation rental. We felt at home the minute we walked in the door. This well equipped cottage had been a one room school house in its “last life”. It was sparkling clean and tactfully decorated. There was porch seating and a gas grill. The well stocked kitchen allowed you to prepare you own meals if you’d like or you could venture out to the interesting local restaurants. The owners created such lovely touches in the cottage that you couldn't help but feel comfortable. The beds were very comfortable. There were books, magazines, board games, etc. The view from the deck went on forever. I am looking forward to returning in other seasons. I highly recommend this property for the comforts of home it provided. Karen & Larry Lewisburg, PARecommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

We’ve stayed at the Old School House, as we call it, several times before it was listed on VBRO. We love it there, and plan to go back. It’s a charming and snug little place, sitting atop of a knoll. You can see Mt. Ascutney from the deck, and look down over a brook that borders the back of the property. The surrounding wooded, hilly countryside is beautiful. Excellent restaurants are scattered all over. Vermont has a vibrant community of artists and crafts-people, and the galleries highlight them. Maxfield Parrish, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and the Cornish Art Colony all had homes and worked within a half-hour’s drive of the School House, and their artwork frequently depicted the area. There’s hiking and riding trails, skiing in the winter. It’s a really great place.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I stayed at this property last September. We stayed two days and had a wonderful time. The house is exactly as advertized. It was clean, cozy, quiet and comfortable. It is the perfect size for a small family or two couples traveling together. We hiked in the morning and the neighbors were very friendly. In the evening we went into town for a nice dinner. We are looking forward to staying again this year. When I imagined staying in a cottage in Vermont, this was just what I had in mind.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
