Relax on the Beachfront ~ Chelem, Yucatan
- Minimum stay:7 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Imagine yourself drinking your morning coffee while sitting on your balcony and watching the sunrise. Then, go for a dip in the Gulf and examine the coral reef located just a few meters from your door. Fix yourself a breakfast of fresh local fruit and perhaps a shrimp omelette, then relax on outdoor hammocks, or swim in the pool only steps away.
Route to the Sun Villa combines modern convenience with the charm of the Yucatan. Suitable for nonsmoking singles, couples, or families, the ground floor of our villa features a fully-equipped kitchen/dining area, spacious living room with convertible sofa, Mexican-inspired bathroom with generous shower space, and a bedroom with queen-sized bed. You'll love the privacy and spaciousness afforded by the upper floor, which is dedicated solely to a master suite with king-sized bed and seating area, bathroom with terrarium shower, and a full balcony overlooking the pool, palapa and beach. The Canadian owners live onsite.
Area Attractions: Exploring? Travel to one of the many nearby attractions such as haciendas, cenotes (underground rivers with crystal clear water for swimming), Mayan ruins, or a flamingo lookout.
Nightlife? Although our immediate area tends to be (mostly) quiet, a few restaurants in Chelem offer special events from time to time including karaoke, big screen viewing of sports, and other special events. You'll want to visit Merida on a Saturday night, when the streets are closed to vehicles, and the restaurants put tables and entertainment out-of-doors. You'll often see traditional dancers.
The city of Merida also boasts many familiar shopping and restaurant chains including Home Depot, Costco, Wal-Mart, TGI Friday's, Burger King, KFC and Chili's. Or relax in a recliner in the VIP room of a movie theatre, and be served by a waiter as you watch the movie of your choice, in English. Visit the Gallerias shopping mall and go ice skating on their indoor rink.
Shopping & More: Like to shop? The port of Progreso is located only 15 minutes away by car, and features a traditional mercado (market) where you can purchase fresh produce, meats, fish, and clothing. On days when the cruise ships are in, the square immediately across from the mercado boasts a lively shopping area with stalls operated by vendors from throughout the Yucatan. Here you can find traditional and modern clothing, silver jewelry, carvings and many other items for the souvenir seeker. Or take a 45-minute bus ride from Progreso to the City of Merida where, on Sundays in the main square (less than 3 blocks from the bus station), you will find a profusion of goods at very reasonable prices. On the way back through Chelem, stop at one of the many stalls set up by the roadside and purchase 'pay de coco' (coconut pie) or 'cremitas de coco' (coconut pudding topped with cinnamon ~ our family's personal favorite).

My family of 4 (+ my brother for a few days) stayed in the home for 8 days. Even before we arrived, Marla went out of her way to share information about the local area with us which made our time there better. From the moment we arrived, the owners went out of their way to make us comfortable and to help us. I can't say enough about how gracious they are. The owner's home is on the same lot and were always there to help or answer questions when we needed something. The home was exactly as described on VBRO and was clean when we arrived. If you want a relaxing time at the beach, this would be an ideal place. The only real drawback of the home is the location if you don't have a car. It is a couple miles to Chelem town, about 10 to Progreso and about 35 to Merida. We had a car so it was no issue for us. But if you arrive without a car and plan to do a lot of exploring, it might pose a challenge. There are combis that run on the main road but walking to town and back to buy groceries would not be recommended.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you for your glowing review. We really enjoyed meeting you and your family, and were glad we were able to help out when needed. We look forward to hosting you again on your next trip.

We enjoyed our stay in Chelem. The house, located on a quiet beachfront, had everything we needed and the host was very accommodating. The description provided is basically accurate, but it should be made clear that the village of Chelem — which has several restaurants, a decent fruit and vegetable market, and fresh fish and seafood sellers — is a good half-hour's walk away, or a short ride by colectivo. There are also a couple of good restaurants in nearby Chuburna Puerto, which can be reached by colectivo. Our host was kind enough to give us rides to Progreso and to the ruins at Dzibilchaltun, which helped a lot, and to lend us videos from her collection.Owner response: Thank you for drawing attention to the part of our location description which reads "midway between the small fishing villages of Chelem and Chuburna". Your clarification is appreciated: to reach the village of Chelem does require either a roughly 30-minute walk or a short walk on a beach road to the main highway to catch a collectivo. A bakery truck comes by the villa daily, a water truck twice weekly, and a seafood seller comes to the door by chance or when called. As you mentioned it is quiet here, and away from the hustle and bustle of an urban setting. We love it that way, and are glad you enjoyed the quiet as well.

My husband and I spent three months at Georg and Marla's Casita. The beautiful sunsets were wondrous and the landlords were very gracious. We found the casita spacious and we enjoyed walks along the beach or a stroll to the quaint village of Chelem where you can purchase many items including fresh fruits and vegetables. After returning to the casita we often enjoyed a dip in the private pool that was located steps from our door.Owner response: We enjoyed hosting your extended stay in Via del Sol Villa. Thanks for the review, and we hope to see you again soon.
