This home sits on an 80 acre parcel that was homesteaded in 1913. The home itself was built in built in 1963 by our Grandparents using handhewn redwood beams that were harvested from the property. We are making this home available as a vacation rental. Relax in this peaceful setting as you listen to the year round creek. Stroll through the orchards and pick fresh oranges and apples. Read about our family history of those that braved the wild and wooly coast and made Big Sur their home for generations. The home is ideal as it is centrally located between Carmel and Big Sur. Play in Big Sur during the day and dine in world class restaurants in the evening in Monterey and Carmel. Because this home is located right off the main road year around access is no problem. The home has been recently updated yet still retains its original charm. Our online calendar is kept up to date so please check the calendar for availability.

Location, Location, Location:: The home is 3.9 miles from Highway 1 and is located on a ridgetop 1350 feet above the Pacific. The home offers beautiful views of the canyon and ocean and because of its location the home is generally above the fog lending itself to spectacular sunsets and sunny days while the coast can be covered in fog. Because of its central location it is a 30 minute drive south to to Big Sur along some of the most beautiful coastline in California and crosses the world famous Bixby Bridge. With so many activities to chose from in Big Sur your days will be filled. Want a romantic or indulgent dinner? Then a drive 30 minutes north to Carmel-By-The-Sea offers numerous restaurants with a wide variety to chose from with unique shops and numerous art gallerys as you stroll through its quaint town where Clint Eastwood once served as Mayor.

Nearby Activities:: Horse back ride at Andrew Molera State Park, hike the Los Padres National Forest on some of the most challenging trails. In Palo Colorado Canyon you can stroll along the redwood covered Mill Creek Redwood Preserve Trail or drive just four miles up the canyon to Botchers Gap where you have access to the Ventana Wilderness along the Skinner Ridge Trail. Golf at the world famous Pebble Beach Golf Links, wine taste in Carmel Valley, whale watch or kayack in the Monterey Bay or just stay home and enjoy the peace and relaxation that is the essence of Big Sur. Massage can be arranged right in the home.

Our Goal:: We are not in this to make a living, we are simply using the money to pay the taxes on the property to ensure that the legacy that our Great Grandparents left us will continue on for many generations to come, We have had many friends that have recommended their friends stay with us which gave us the idea of making this home available as a vacation rental. The upstairs bedroom has a queen sized bed, the downstairs bedroom has a queen sized bed and a double futon. The living room sofa pulls out into a double bed and there is a king size futon on the sun porch. We live nearby but your privacy will be our utmost concern.

Traveling with 3 fifteen year old boys to experience the beauty of Big Sur, we could not have picked a more charming spot to spend our days. Driving up the road to the house is like stepping back in time. Our boys loved keeping the wood stove fired up and keeping our home away from home toasty warm. The sleeping porch is cantilevered high above the canyon which also delighted the teens. As an added bonus the home is well situated both for Big Sur, Carmel and Monterey. The owners were available and helpful and we cannot wait to return!

Recommended for: Families with young children, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

We were looking for a nice quiet place near the ocean to eat, drink, and be merry as we spent time with family members, and this wonderful home fit the bill. We gave my dad and his wife the upstairs bedroom and my brother, myself, and our spouses bunked in the two beds in the downstairs bedroom. The pictures don't fully convey the available space; the kitchen is large with all of the modern amenities to make great meals and the living room is huge with two large couches and a wonderful wood-burning stove (a note of caution, I don't think I would bring curious toddlers here, the stove would require constant monitoring to prevent injury). There's a large TV too, but the warm dining room and inviting living room made socializing much more appealing than TV. Jake's dog even came by to say hi our first morning there. Every activity you can imagine is a short drive away. If you're looking to go out and back to the house multiple times per day, the slow, twisty drive from the highway may be a deterrent, but if you want a clean and cozy home to be your base for day trips in the area, this is a great option.

Owner response: Thanks for your thoughts. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and hope you can come back and visit again. Jake and Cheryl Goetz

This house was a great place to stay. It had everything we needed to cook several meals; it is within an easy drive to all the great places along Big Sur. The pictures don't do this very beautiful place justice.

A very charming cabin. The pictures on VRBO do not do this place justice. We found a well-equipped kitchen, great heat from a wood stove and a fireplace, with kindling and firewood supplied, and plenty of space for up to 8 people (though we only had 5). I would definitely stay here again if I come back to the Big Sur area.

This home is wonderful! Secluded, but beautiful and very clean. Amazing views, personal, and large. And Cheryl and Jake seem like such nice people. Genuine. It was way more than any of us expected for the price; we really couldn't believe how perfect it really was. It's a few miles down a beautiful, windy, pretty much one lane road through the forest. But an easy drive to highway one. The property stretches, and there is even a citrus grove. Will definitely plan on returning.

Owner response: Thanks for your kind words. We do our best to share our family heritage and this wonder place we live in. We feel that that we can offer a home away from home and a great place to explore the beautiful Big Sur coast from. Please come back and visit us again! Jake and Cheryl Goetz

Jake and Cheryl's cottage was located right off of Highway 1 just north of Big Sur and south of Monterey. What an incredible area. We went to Pfieffer beach, checked out McQuay Falls and Point Lobos Sate Park. We ate in Monterey on the Wharf and watched the seals and sea otters swim around in the bay. The cottage is located way up a mountain road, so I would hesitate to take a large vehicle up there. But, the cottage was exactly what we expected. Plenty of room for our family of four. The washer and dryer were a nice ammenity. We had a wonderful time exploring the area.

This is a very nice cabin for the price. Cheryl met us at the cabin when we got there. It took us twice up the mountain to find it. We missed the mailboxes that are on the left as you drive up and our GPS took us way up the mountain, as Cheryl mentions in the directions, don't trust your GPS. The road is very twisty and pretty narrow at times (we did not expect that), I would not drive it at night as there is a cliff on one side. It will take you about 15 minutes to drive the 4 miles out of the mountain. The cabin itself was very nice. Great bedrooms and the beds were very soft, plenty of space. The living room was spacious as well. We had 2 children under 2 and it was a great space for them to play. The kitchen was nice with an upgraded fridge, dish washer, microwave and stove. The washer and dryer were a great feature; we washed all of our clothes on the last day and come home with clean clothes. Bathrooms were nice, a tub would have been nice, but the shower was adequate. Plenty of towels for all of us. The cabin is located on the side of a mountain, so when it states that they have 80 acres; which is nice; it is not 80 acres that you can really take advantage of in my opinion. Be aware that there is no cable TV, bring movies, games, ect... AND no cell phone service. The cabin is pretty centrally located to many attractions. We went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium (30 min north), drove around Carmel and went on the 17 Mile Drive (well worth the $10). Fisherman's Wharf was fun too, lots of shops and Cannery Row was good too! If you eat at El Torrito you can park in their lot for free and then walk around Cannery Row with out paying for parking! We also went to McWay Falls (45 min South). Over all it was a good trip.

Amazingly great family time ! The cabin was very secluded in a mountainous area among the forest but just a short drive down the hill to the beach. The cabin was super clean with a great oven, fridge, washer n dryer (to wash those poison oak touched clothes) Bring movies, games or crafts ,there's a great living room for family time complete with a fireplace. The dining room was awesome overlooking the forest down below and during dinner you can see the beautiful sunset. The beds are totally comfy-just like home and from the upstairs bedroom you can see all the stars while laying in bed. We did some baking while there and honestly there's everthing you need, - cookie sheets, foil, some spices, and all the pots and pans, a great gas bbq, the towels are wonderful, sheets and bedding is fresh clean and so comfy. There's a couple hikes you can take around the cabin. Things to do locally: horseback riding at Andrew Molera Park -takes you through creeks, forest, meadows, and to the beach- it was fun ! Sand Dollar Beach -south of cabin - hunt for jade on the beach parking 5.00 - this was fun ! Short hike to Mc Way Falls at Julia Pfiefer Beach beautiful. South of cabin at the River Inn was good food a lil pricey but right on the Big Sur river very relaxing. Our time went by too fast, looking forward to going back again. Great location of forest and beach.! Host Cheryl was very nice ! Cons- only 1 shower no bathtub but it was a very nice shower, many large spiders in cabin but what do u expect its in the mountains, the road to the cabin is very narrow , all uphill, and some paved and some not, I do not suggest driving it in the dark as there are no lights and very close to the edge of hillside. Enjoy your stay- will definitely come back again !
