Girdwood apartment description
A Slope Side Apartment is an economical alternative to Hotels, condos and B&B's. This private apartment has all the comforts and amenities to make yourself at home in an Alaskan mountain setting. With a separate entrance on the first floor, this unit has one bedroom with a queen and single bed and the couch/futon pulls out to another double bed in the living room. There is a washer and dryer in the unit and soap is provided. It is in a perfect location to walk to the restaurants and shops nearby, yet the street is very quiet and away from any traffic. A biking/walking trail is located two minutes from your door.
A Slope Side Apartment is located in Girdwood, just 35 miles south of Anchorage (50 mins. from Anchorage International Airport). Travelling down on the very scenic Seward Highway, you will enjoy specatular scenery and arrive to the friendly feeling of this small town in the forest. This area is considered the northern most expanse of the Pacific temperate rain forest. The lush mountains in the summer receive more than 600 inches of snow in the winter. Hanging glaciers surround the valley, connecting to the massive ice feilds of Prince William Sound. Bears, moose, dall sheep, mountain goats, eagles and other wildife is often seen in the area and right in town. Girdwood's small community is 'Alaska' and well worth the drive out of Anchorage.

The door was unlocked and the key was on the table. We turned up the heat a bit and felt lucky to find such a well equipped reasonable rental near the center of Alyeska. It was very well stocked with supplies---coffee, tea, paper supplies, first aid, books, brochures for local attractions and it seemed like we were in a private wood though there really were other dwellings nearby. Several friends stopped by and it was easy to find with the distinctive puffin on the front. We would definitely rent again if we were in the area.

This bottom floor apatment was perfect for me, my husband and 2 teenaged boys. Plenty of room, bright, clean and had everything you need to be comfortable. Nice sized parking area ,no fighting over parking spaces. We did not want to leave this apartment! What we most enjoyed about the apartment were the big country style windows to look out of and watch the snow falling! Cozy and comfortable. The owner Ken was super friendly and made me totally at ease renting his place and always took his time to answer my questions. We will be back next year( only hope it will be available) Thank you Ken! Melanie from Fairbanks.

Stayed in this apartment with 3 friends and completely enjoyed the house. What a great location to use as a base for travel around the area. Ken and Thalia were welcoming and friendly. The apartment was cozy, beds were comfortable and there was plenty of room for all of us. If I ever get a chance to come back to Alaska, I'd stay here. The local restaurants were great too! (Ken, my leg is fine, no damage at all. Thanks again for contacting AK Dept. to notify them of the bridge problems over Winner Creek.)

We were a part of three and stayed for two nights towards the end of our two week vacation through south central alaska. This place is easily accessible to the main highway, yet sufficiently inside to be peaceful. We couldn't explore Girdwood much due to heavy rains. The owner was quite helpful in guiding us on some bird watching tips. Check out the Double Musky Inn nearby for dinner. Great Southern Cajun food in Alaska! The owner's wonderful pictures adore the walls for added personal touch.

Just what we needed!
Just what we needed!
We had the perfect stay in Girdwood this weekend at Ken and Thalia's Slope Side Apartment. The lodging was clean, cute, and comfortable. The owners went out of their way to make our stay easy and efficient. Visiting Girdwood for a friend's wedding, we found the most difficult aspect to be booking a location for only one night, which as local Alaskans we found very inconvenient. Ken and Thalia had no problem with a one night booking which was greatly appreciated. The apartment also offered many amenities not found at other locations such as a full kitchen, and laundry facilities. We had an excellent experience, highly recommend this location to others, and will likely return ourselves! Thanks for everything!

We (3 friends) stayed here for 5 nights. It was just what we needed. Clean, comfortable and close enough to everything. Thalia and Ken did a great job on the place and were very sweet!

About the owner: Ken & Thalia moved to Alaska in 1989 from the New England area. Ken has been running an eco-adventure guiding service called Wilkinson Expeditions. He's a trained photographer and naturalist and has guided private groups in Alaska and other locations since 1995.Thalia is an elementary school art teacher and runs a summer art camp for kids in Girdwood We both like gardening, there is a green house on location and together we built the wood fired sauna in the back yard.
Why the Owner Chose Girdwood:
We fell in love with Alaska. We bought the house in Girdwood because of the outstanding scenery and recreational opportunities nearby. It is not far from Anchorage and the drive is one of the most scenic drives in the country. We see alot of wildlife in the area and back yard and the photo opportunities are endless. Girdwood is a small town surrounded by hundreds of square miles of National and State Forest. With less than 1500 people when we moved here, now approximately 2200, it is very friendly with a strong community spirit. We both like winter and skiing and this small town offers the Alyeska Ski Resort, many cross country trails and lots of snow.
