Well, Halloween's trick this year was to bring cold temps a little early to the Mid-Atlantic. Because of that, I'm closing the house for the winter a little sooner than years past. However, I'm still giving quotes & taking reservations for Spring/Summer 2015. Come enjoy the clear, crisp views across 5 miles of big water!!
The Potomac River is wide here and can be seen from nearly every room of this lovely home. Central gas heat and a gas fireplace keep you cozy in winter while central A/C and ceiling fans keep you cool in summer. The spacious, fully equipped kitchen and dining area opens into the family room complete with built-in bars, red heart pine floors and 9 ft. ceilings. Large, sliding glass doors and casement windows allow the gorgeous views and river breezes
The bedrooms are large and carpeted; two of the baths have double sinks and shower / tub combos. But don't stay inside when a large deck and inviting two level pier beckon you outdoors. Put your boat in the water at the community boat launch, and tie it up at the pier. Or just relax on the deck or dock and watch for the bald eagles to soar overhead..
A little info about some NNK historial sites: This penisula, as well as all of this region, was home to several of America's Founding Fathers and major players in Colonial history. Westmoreland County, established in 1653, can boast of a few notables. George Washington was born at Wakefield in 1732. His birthplace, now a national park just off Route 3 (aka: King's Highway), is open to the public year round. James Monroe, born near what is now Colonial Beach, VA in 1758, was the fifith President of the U.S. and considered the last of the Founding Fathers - he died in1831. There is a small monument marking his birthplace on Rt. 205 at Monroe Hall. Stratford Hall (built in the 1730's) was the home of the prominent Lee family, which included two signers of the Declaration of Independence, and the birthplace of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Located just off Rt. 3, it is open year round with many events including Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmastide and a celebration of R.E. Lee's January birthday with free admission.
Some other interesting things in the neighborhood: Wakefield (G.W's birthplace) is just upriver from this home and Westmoreland State Park is just downriver and can be seen from the front yard. The 1300 acre park extends a mile and a half along the Potomac, is open year round and offers hiking, fishing, boating, swimming (in summer) just to name a few. It's scenic beauty ranges from a sandy beach to the Horsehead Cliffs. Westmoreland Berry Farm, with its stunning views, is a riverside farm located off Rt. 3 on the other side of the county along the Rappahannock River. There is always something going on there from May - early Dec, including pick your own fruit or just buy already picked fruit and preserves at the adorable store. If wine is your thing, there are 8 wineries and vineyards along the Northern Neck Wine Trail which extends from Stafford County down to Northumberland County.
And a bit about the nearest city:: The nearest city is Fredricksburg (about 45 miles) with its 40-block Historic District, made up of more than 350 buildings dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. This district has a charming 'main street' shopping area where time seems to have stood still with a range of unique stores including plenty of antique shops and even a drug store with a real soda fountain. This city fiqured prominently in American history from the colonial period through the Civil War. There is also the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center which has permanent exhibitions on a range of topics, including the local pre-colonial Native Amercians. The Civil War hosted one of the largest & deadliest battles here and in nearby Chancellorsville There are battlefield parks, cemetaries and a museum waiting to be explored, espiecially while the Sesquicentennial (150 yrs) is currently being commemorated. On a more commercial note, the fabulous Wegman's supermarket can also be found here.

Virginia's 'Northern Neck' is a penisula of land between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers that starts in King George County and extends to the Chesapeake Bay. This home is located on the wide & historic shores of the Potomac River in Westmoreland Co. between Geo. Washington's Birthplace (National Park) and Westmoreland State Park. This area is steeped in history & natural beauty.
For extensive shopping, entertainment & golf we are less than 2 hrs from D.C.; 90 mins from Richmond and Williamsburg; 45 mins from Fredericksburg VA, or Waldorf, MD. But take a break from the city, go see the birthplaces of Westmoreland County's historical celebrities: Geo Washington, James Monroe & Robert E. Lee. For Civil War buffs, a Civil War Museum, Cemetary & Battlefields in Fredericksburg are less than an hour away. Visit local antique shops, Westmoreland Berry Farm and Ingleside Winery. Drive about 54 miles to Reedville, VA and take a cruise across the Bay to Smith or Tangier Island or perhaps charter fishing in the Bay. Bring your boat, canoe, kayak and/or bicycles - this quiet, waterfront community is perfect for their use.
In the fall and winter, the air is so clear and crisp that the view of and across the Potomac is even more fabulous. After dark, watch the twinkling lights way across the water, look for the columns of flashing red lights and you won't believe the nightsky on a clear night! Look for the daily wildlife sighting. You're likely to see at least one of these - herons, osprey, ducks, bald eagles, rabbits, deer, foxes, maybe even my fat, but shy, groundhog!
Most of the historic sites/parks are open year round without all the summer crowds. Also in winter, you can even take a day trip for some snow skiing. Bryce Mtn Resort is only a little over 3 hrs away.
Year Purchased: 1993
About the owner: I have loved this spot since we purchased 22 years ago. After a heartbreaking fire took the original cottage, we lovingly built this home to enjoy with family and friends. I was born and raised in Fredericksburg, only 45 miles away, so know this area pretty well.
Why the Owner Chose Montross: As a proud Virginian, I know how historically rich and charming this region is. My family has lived & vacationed in the Northern Neck for many years. We are close to the hub of government; yet rural, peaceful and without the stress of northern VA. Plus, the mighty Potomac is wonderfully wide where this property is situated. However, river traffic is quiet on this side so ideal for kayaks and canoes as well as jetskis and motor boats.
The Unique Benefits at this House: Quiet, friendly, close knit community with a private boat ramp. My home has a wonderful large dock that can accommodate two boats. Home has inviting decks on both levels to enjoy the view.
With central air/heat and a fireplace the home can used year round. Though, with our moderate climate here, winter is not usually very cold or very long.
