Opening the front door, there's an ahhhh moment as the light pours all around you, and your eye is immediately drawn beyond the windows to the drama of the ocean filling the bay. (Stay the week and get one night free, all seasons.)
Though you are only 2 short blocks from wriggling your toes in the sand, with easy access to multiple beach, bay, and water activities, you could just watch, from inside or out on the decks: the tide coming in and flowing out, eagles soaring and perching in view, hummingbirds darting, pelicans swooping, and herons fishing. Meanwhile, boaters, crabbers, canoers and kayakers, ships at sea, sailboaters, paddleboarders, windsurfers in the bay and ocean, and even hang-gliders provide endless entertainment.
Inside is a mini-pool table, flat screen TV, games, puzzles, kites, books, CD, record and tape player, a children's play basket, a clawfoot soaking tub for luxuriating, and a setting so open and comfortable you'll immediately feel at ease. With 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms located across a wide hall from each other, there's sufficient privacy for 2 couples. One of the bedrooms has its own private bath and queen bed. The other has a king bed with a bit of an ocean view, with a skylight allowing the moon to shine through. Yet some prefer sleeping under the stars on the pull-out queen couch in the great room with the skylight above.
And the sun! Protected by the capes to the north and south, the sun will be shining here when fog envelopes everywhere else. On such days, you can often wear as little as a tank top and shorts on the south deck, even in cold weather, as it's so protected from the wind. You can gaze at the ocean from both decks. It's so peaceful and quiet, the ocean is usually the loudest sound around.
Outside in the fenced yard, your dog can cavort. You might want to use the kayak on one of the sleepy rivers between here and Tillamook, only a few miles away. Or, if experienced, paddle it in the bay when the tide is coming in, and the wind and sea are calm. On the beach, within walking distance north, is Oceanside with its cute cafes, espresso, and famed restaurant, Roseanna's. When it's windy there, you can always retreat to the protected cove that is Netarts where there's also a fabulous restaurant even closer-by to the south with a great bay-view outdoor patio, the Schooner. Plus, there's a fresh seafood shack, Floyd's, in walking distance open Thursdays - Sundays, 10-7 currently. A small grocery 2 blocks away has everything you forgot to bring. Should you care to shop, 2 blocks away is a curio store that always has fresh-baked brownies on hand. Seven miles away in Tillamook is the popular Tillamook Cheese Factory, golf, movie theater, and numerous other possible excursions. From mid-June through September, Tillamook also hosts a downtown Farmers Market on Saturdays from 9 to 2. In the spring, whale-watchers flock to nearby Cape Lookout.
If you haven't experienced it before, it's hard to describe the unique drama of a bay AND ocean view. There's all the healing action of the ocean breakers - each unique but overall relentless and timeless, but also so much more: an ever-changing scene of the ocean retreating to uncover the tip of the Cape Lookout peninsula in all its permutations. As with a sunset, if you look away, a new scene meets your next glance. Now enough sand has been revealed for pelicans and sea lions to be basking on the sand. Now a crab boat has been hauled up on shore, and people are walking on the sandspit. You want to get OUT there and explore with them! There wasn't that log marooned on the sand when last you looked. You're getting hungry but can't tear yourself away! Slide the table up to the picture window for a virtually non-stop gaze-fest!
Sometimes when you go to the beach, it's to relax; sometimes it's to play, explore, and be active. It's all available here. Come enjoy!

3 minutes to beach for walks, play, or runs, Superb low tide discoveries, Netarts Bay is so healthy with ocean life that you tend to Bird-Watch all day long inside or outside the house, in the yard and on the decks: not just eagles, herons and hummingbirds, but pelicans in season; Canoeing, Clamming & Crabbing (or get 'em live in small grocery 2 blocks away), Home of oyster-farming, Excellent restaurants in walking distance, Small curio shop that serves fresh brownies 2 blocks away, It's generally so peaceful here that the ocean is the loudest sound you'll hear but there's endless adventuring on foot, bike, or by car nearby, In winter, stormy seas make being warm and cozy inside especially delightful. As the saying goes: 'There is no bad weather at the beach, only inadequate clothing!'
Whale-watching from the Cape Meares Lighthouse a few miles north is a seasonal favorite.
Even though we're outside the tsunami zone, we felt more secure having 2 stocked emergency backpacks on site.
From Memorial Day weekend through the summer, Floyd's - a fresh seafood shop - is in walking distance.
Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: We are retirees living in Portland, who love that it's only a short scenic drive to Netarts for canoeing, kayaking, beach strolls, low tide adventures, and just relaxing. Being able to rest while being entertained by the view is a big plus. A lot of places have a great ocean view, but you have to go out on the deck. Or stand. Here, you can sit back, put your feet up, and gaze the whole live-long day at the dramatic changes of the bay and sand bar into ocean, and back again, with sea lions and birds and water sports of all kinds passing by. The fact that unloading means merely dropping our supplies inside the door, makes it possible to enjoy the beach immediately. (See below re: the 1 minute drive to be ON the beach!) This special little, mostly unknown, gem of an area hosts a beehive of quiet, nature-based activity and enjoyment of the ocean, none of it intruding on, merely enhancing our own low-key enjoyment. Think picturesque! Crab boats, paragliders, kayakers, paddle-boarders, the lone adventurer exploring the sandbar only accessible by boat, with the incoming tide beginning to wash over it.... Exciting!
Why the Owner Chose Netarts:
Many decades ago my babysitting money went into my folks buying a beach cabin in Oceanside, 2 miles away (now for sale!). I grew up making forts on the beach, log dams on the streams, and exploring adjoining beaches inaccessible from the beach except at low tides. (Lost Boy Cave! Devil's Punchbowl!) As adults, my husband and I discovered canoeing across Netarts Bay to the sandy peninsula off Cape Lookout (that you see from our windows). After nearly being dragged out to sea once, we learned how powerful bay tides can be! We also discovered that when it's fogged in or windy everywhere else, Netarts is sort of a sunny 'banana belt'! And at 1 1/4 hours from Portland, we can be breathing ocean air, with our toes in the sand in almost no time. Plus, with Oceanside being the often fogged-in, or windy, picturesque destination 2 miles to the north, and Pacific City being the happening surfing spot 30 minutes south, Netarts is rarely crowded with tourists, though the bay waters often teem with crab boats and all manner of water craft!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
What meets the eye when you walk in the door is what sold me on this beach house in that first instant. Your eyes are drawn immediately to the ocean out the windows. A little punch of awe. Plus, I love all the light pouring in. Makes me feel part of the nature you see all around. You'll rarely find a beach-view house so perfectly situated to take advantage of sunny days, where you can be out of the wind, with such easy access to the beach and so close to it (while still outside the tsunami zone!). It features expansive views, and is all on one level, so the floor plan kind of flows. The fenced grassy yard makes entertaining your dog easy, and allows for a game of croquet. Walking on the beach to Oceanside for fish tacos or pastries is a favorite treat. When we're feeling lazy, we drive around the corner to Happy Camp where we don't even have to do stairs to be on the beach. A phenomenon I've long noticed, walking from Netarts to Happy Camp on the beach, I've decided to call a 'vortex'. Ahead to the north at the horizon you see giants! As they approach, they shrink to normal size. There's some amazing optical illusion occurring! It happens when you're standing somewhere around the piers, and the 'giants' are on the Happy Camp side of Fall Creek. Check it out! Then tell us what you think!!
