Our family of four, (kids ages 4 1/2 and 1 1/2), spent two nights at this lovely spot just down the road from Occidental. Having spent much time in the area pre-children, we wanted to introduce our kids to the beauty of the California coast and the magic of the redwoods. The cottage was the perfect nesting spot and launch point for our adventures: calm and lovely in it's interior design, with a sweet kitchen for preparing and eating family meals and sweet-dream-inducing beds in which to rest our heads at night. The yard was a boon for the kids, complete with rope swing, fruit trees, creek overlooks, and ball-kicking space. I appreciated the short walk to the nearby Wild Flour Bread bakery with its delicious breads, beautiful gardens, and well-made lattes. We spent several mornings wandering the bakery garden and enjoying the sites and sounds therein. Other nearby treasures: a local elementary school with a fantastic school garden and playground, plus an amazing trail through the redwoods - perfect for small legs; close proximity to sandy, surf-friendly beaches; and some great dining opportunities and a Whole Foods (including homemade ice cream) in nearby Sebastapol. All in all, such a lovely way to spend a few days just being present with each other as a family...We highly recommend this spot to other travelers looking for a quiet, calm, cozy get-away close to a weath of recreational opportunities and great food options.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

A warm and beautifully maintained property. The beds were deliciously inviting and comfortable;the porch perfect for reading, relaxing and lively discussions with friends! The location is perfect with a wonderful spa across the street, a fabulous bakery just paces away and a few more paces takes you to a winery of fine wine! Had the best here and look forward to returning!Recommended for: Pet owners, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

We spent a week at the cottage with our three girls and loved the super-comfortable beds, the big yard, hammock, swings and close encounters with wildlife (one morning we got to see a deer nursing her fawn just a few steps from the back of the house). The bakery two doors down is also amazing. Freestone is perfectly situated with easy access to the coast at Bodega Bay, the Redwoods at Occidental, great ice cream in Sebastopol (Screamin' Mimi's) and wine throughout Sonoma. The separate office and wifi also meant that dad could get some work done when he needed to during our stay. Thanks for the fantastic NorCal summer getaway!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+.

Loved staying at this lovely cottage. It's close enough to San Francisco to make it an easy weekend getaway, yet the setting is perfecly peaceful. Loved having breakfast (which always included sinfully delicious pastries from the bakery next door) on the front porch and lazing in the sun. Other house amenities I totally appreciate are the well appointed kitchen to prepare meals (with ingredients from the local farmer's market), the fireplace and the very comfortable beds. It's a great place to hang out and relax - one of my favorite activities is lying in the hammock and reading a book. It is also a very convenient base to explore the area. On various visits I have gone kayaking, visited a nearby historic steamoperated sawmill, explored local shops and restaurants and gone on lots of walks on the beach and in the woods, I'm sure I will visit many more times.Recommended for: Pet owners, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

As a city dweller, the ability to travel a short distance and spend a couple of days in a quiet and peaceful setting is priceless. The home is comfortable and easy, the land is spacious and the surroundings are gorgeous. Wood fire baked bread from the Freestone bakery, Italian meals and music in Occidental, wine tasting and shopping in Sebastopol and the beautiful coast of Northern California with a trip down Route 1 back to the city make this retreat one of my favorites. A couple of days relaxing and the ability to look up at the incredible night sky was a welcome change on life so I think my next stay will be for a week. Thank you for a much needed break. I am already planning my next visit!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, girls getaway.

I have had the pleasure of staying in this lovely home on a few different occasions. I am not sure where to start in expressing my fondness for the home as well as the area in general, so I suppose I'll go chronologically: From waking up in the morning and grabbing a cup of coffee at the famous bakery next door and one of their many famous breads, to enjoying what I have just purchased on the incredibly sunny front porch of the house watching the dew turn to mist and evaporate in the quiet air, to reading a book in the back yard as the sun makes its way around the house as the day progresses, to taking a walk towards the tiny town of Freestone itself and finding a quiet country road on the left that meanders by a private pond that, for some odd but welcome reason, has a public deck to view the ducks and miniature Statue of Liberty, much of this was a unique surprise, but perhaps it shouldn't be, as I continued by the horse ranch and up the hill, hoping not to get lost. I didn't. Later, at night again in the back yard, cooking sausages on the ancient fire pit. Then on other days driving to the quaint town of Occidental, nestled in the Redwoods, or going the other direction to the thriving metropolis of Sebastopol (comparatively speaking), or perhaps heading to the beach called Salmon Creek if I remembered to bring my surfboard. It is easy to forget things as this place is only half an hour north of San Francisco, from where I embark. I couldn’t recommend this place more highly. It is so quiet and peaceful and there are many more things to do than what I have mentioned, but I like taking it slow up here.Recommended for: Pet owners, families with teenagers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway, people with disabilities.
