Don't choose it for the beach...
Don't choose it for the beach...
If you're looking for a property that will allow your small children to access a beach where they can play and swim, look elsewhere. Despite verbal assurances from the owner to the contrary, this "beach" consists of a dock which no longer reaches the water, and is surrounded by very tall, thick grasses. The water can only be reached by traversing a sizable jetty formed of unstable rocks with ankle sized gaps. Anyone who is not surefooted has no chance, and my 2 year old was unable even to make the attempt; nor would it have been safe for me to have carried him there. Unfortunately, this was one of the reasons we chose this property, so we were disappointed. Also, be aware that the staircase reaching the sleeping quarters has one side that has no railing, making nighttime trips to the bathroom for small children particularly dangerous, even if you can convince them to hug the wall when they're alert and awake. This property has had many positive reviews over the years, based on the guestbook at the house, and nobody has complained about this stuff, so I'm not sure what I'm missing. However, because I had a conversation with the owner in advance of renting, specifically about the beach, I was surprised and dismayed at what we found when we arrived.

Owner response: As many people know, Lake Michigan and surrounding bays have had much lower water levels for the past 10 years. As is true to most places around Door County, the docks are out of water, foliage has grown in places on the beach, and the water level has remarkably changed. However, North Bay is a shallow bay with access to it. There are many positive remarks about our cottage in our guest book where children truly enjoyed the natural aspects of the bay, catching and releasing crayfish & frogs to name a few, canoeing, swimming, etc. Two weeks ago when we were staying next door, small children spent the entire day, everyday, outside playing in the rocks, water, etc. catching & releasing, swimming, canoeing. It truly depends on what type of Door County people want & age appropriateness for certain nature activities. We are sorry the reviewer was unhappy. As we were in our cottage that week when they were there, we were unaware of their concerns.
Quiet little cottage
Quiet little cottage
This is such a cute cottage, tucked away on a dead end road. Our family of five comfortably stayed here (1 Queen and 3 Twin beds). There were decks on both the front and back of the cottage, which came in handy for both breezy and warm days. We opted to skip the $50 linen fee and we brought our own. However, we should've skipped bringing sleeping bags as there were plenty of blankets there to keep us cozy at night. We also should've skipped bringing life jackets as these were also provided. We enjoyed paddling around on the canoe, grilling on the patio and making s'mores at the large fire pit on the beach. There was a small rough jetty that leads out to crystal clear water. We enjoyed learning the history of this property which was once the location of the North Bay Fish Co. The only thing we missed was the use of a washer and dryer, which was located in the barn guest house. (We only rented the cottage and not the barn guest house in the back.) We easily found a laundromat in Sister Bay. Overall, a great stay!

Owner response: Thank you for the very nice review. We are so happy you enjoyed our log home and beautiful North Bay. Our family has enjoyed the area for over 40 years. The history of the log house and crib help tell the story of North Bay, fishing background, family life, and the sheer beauty of the area replete with heron, egrets, white pelicans, seagulls, and quiet!

Why the Owner Chose Baileys Harbor:
North Bay is the most pristine & lovely bay in Door County. White swans, pelicans, herons, egrets, ducks, fish of all kinds abound here.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Hiking, walking, canoeing, kayaking, boating, fishing, sailing, biking, etc. from this area is great. Cana Island is very close. Ephriam is 4 miles away. Quiet times for reading are treasured. (It is always quiet; however, shopping is only 10 minutes away!)
