Wonderful owners. Willing to talk and share stories, but not intrusive. Sitting in front of the fire pit, listening to birds and gazing over the hills and vallies was a wonderful respite during a lot of travelling. The kitchen was well stocked and pleasant to cook and eat in. The bedroom is large and comfortable with lots of privacy. It was the perfect stop for us.Did you find this review helpful? Very comfortable, clean and well appointed accommodation in a country setting with a deck overlooking the mountains and the Salinas valley. There are many things to see and do in the area - Monterey Bay Aquarium, Point Lobos Marine Reserve, beaches, missions, farms, wineries and orchards. Susan and Rod were wonderful hosts and provided a wealth of information on things to see and do.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing.

This is an adorable and charming place! Rod and Susan are great hosts. Susan gave us a great little tour of the ranch and we met their chickens, dogs and horses! We also had eggs from the very chickens in the front yard! The kitchen was well equipped with almost everything you'd want. The appliances are all retro. We took full advantage of the kitchen, ate almost every meal at home but one or two. The place is fully furnished and cute and tasteful. Not at all twee which is often the case with b and b's and some vrbos. The only drawback I can think of are that while we were there we did get a little chilly. The heater seemed not to work very well, and Rod gave us some space heaters, but we were told not to use more than one at a time, which meant that we had to choose between having a warm kitchen or a warm bedroom, but not both at the same time. It's likely though, that this has been alleviated by now. I would wholly recommend this vrbo if you have an inkling for how a ranch operates and being around animals in a charming and rustic environment.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: On Tuesday 3/5, our entire rental unit will be rewired. With an unusual cold snap and and many modern appliances in use, our historic house got overwhelmed lately. Our modern system on Tuesday will have new wiring and a breaker for each room, eliminating any inconvenience or restricted use by our guests.

We enjoyed our stay at the Salinas ranch. The rooms were comfortable and the atmosphere was friendly. The ranch animals were welcoming and careful not to offend with smells. We enjoyed the hosts museum room, with artifacts from ancient to more recent users of the land. We were visiting our daughter at Monterey Bay Academy, so the owners allowed us to bring her and some of her friends out to see the ranch animals. We would recommend this VRBO location and were happy to take home some ideas for our own VRBO rental #286251, here in Anacortes, WA.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

My husband and I stayed here to celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary. It was the best weekend we have had in a long time. We loved being out on the ranch. Even though there are neighbors close by, it is still quiet and peaceful. We loved star gazing and watching the twinkling lights in the distance at night. We had beautiful weather so we ate breakfast on the deck and enjoyed the birds chirping and the goats playing below us. Susan and Rod were super friendly and were kind enough to show us around. We visited Wild Things, which is just up the road from the ranch. It is a really cool place, totally worth the $10 to get in. It is an exotic animal park. Great if you have children. Because the apartment is kind of small, I see it more as a romantic getaway than a place for families, but it would still be suitable for a small family. We definitely want to stay there again some time. Maybe we will return for my birthday in JanuaryRecommended for: Girls getaway, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

Our family had a wonderful stay at Pine Canyon Ranch. Susan and Rod were great hosts. Our girls loved collecting chicken eggs, feeding the goats and horses, learning about the horses and riding them. We loved the well appointed kitchen and bedroom with a fantastic view. Rod graciously showed us his "mini-museum" of early California history....very impressive, he even gave us a signed copy of his book "Life on the Ranch" , his compilation of stories of his years growing up on the ranch. I would definitely recommend Rod and Susan's Ranch to anyone interested in staying in the area.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, romantic getaway.

Susan and Rod's place is just AMAZING!!! It was so relaxing, warm and cozy. It is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind. Their ranch is nice and the farmhouse is well kept and the kitchen has everything you can possible need to make a large meal or just a snack. Their dogs are friendly and well behaved. Susan and Rod have thought about everything to make their quests feel welcome, with privacy and all the comforts of home. I would recommend this to anyone from families to a romantic getaway. Thanks again Susan and Rod for sharing your wonder ranch and farmhouse with us.Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

Susan and Rod exceeded our expectations as hosts! They not only provided adorable accomodations, but opened their own home to us, to make us as comfortable as possible. If there was anything we needed, they were only a phone call, if not just a holler, away. We didn't have near enough time in this area of California, as we were driving from San Francisco to LA through Big Sur. It was a whirlwind trip and the Ranch gave us a peaceful place to decompress after a day of driving, sight seeing and exploring. We sat on the deck and watched the falling stars each night. We had one very windy night. It was deliciously creepy hearing all that wind roll across the ranch, rattling the windows! We enjoyed Rod's museum and his book is a must read! I enjoyed reading about his boyhood experiences on that same ranch during our flights home. We appreciated the gift. I hope our gifts will end up in the museum :o) So much history and ranch lore there. For history buffs, it is fascinating to hear about the Ranch's origins and history. The ranch is a great place for families to reconnect after the hectic rat race from their regular lives. The BBQ place recommended by Susan was great. I can honestly say it was the best meal we had during our whole vaca in Cali. If you ask Susan, and you're driving south along the coast, then you can't go wrong with her suggestions. The quarters were decorated very homey, with all the amenities of home. Do be careful when using the microwave and dryer and/or washer at the same time, lol The fuses do get a bit cranky at times. We loved the soaps left for us in the bathroom. There are lots of things to do on the Ranch itself. If we ever return we'd want to spend more time on the Ranch itself, just chilling out, exploring and enjoying that clear canyon air. The surrounding area is beautiful. One suggestion I might make is to have darker curtains, drapes, or even blinds/shades on the windows of guests. It took a bit of getting used to feeling so exposed, even out in the boonies, lol Some folks get a bit antsy about privacy, my Mom being one of them :o) Also it's nice to be able to lock your front door, even if no one is around. Just city habits hard to give up in a secluded place. We'd like to thank gentle Susan and enthusiastic Rod for extending their home and hospitality to us. That is "old school" behavior we don't see often, even here in the heart of the Midwest. God Bless you both! Teresa & Family :o)Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
