History
This is your opportunity to stay in the village of Woodstock, in one of its most charming homes. The house was built in 1809 as a schoolhouse. Generations of owners have each made tasteful additions, creating a house of character and charm. A variety of living spaces, from casual to formal, and an eclectic mix of French and New England furnishings, make the house broadly appealing.
Its warmth and comfort owe to 60 years of care and attention by the owner's family. Walking in the door, you step into a time that has past for most of us-where sitting by the fire is entertainment enough; where children can walk uptown to get an ice cream cone by themselves; where a meal at the dinner table easily lapses into hours of conversation and laughter.
House
The first floor offers a variety of dining and living options. The front living room, with its lemon yellow walls and warm French furnishings, is bright and cheery all day. The rear living room- called the 'shed', for its barn-board wall covering- is the heart of the home. It has a fieldstone fireplace, cozy seating area and dining table overlooking the river. For special occasions, meals can take place in the more formal dinning room, in the front of the house. Or, for casual use, eat at the kitchen table, next to a bright bay window. Perfect for a sunny breakfast! In summer, relax and enjoy lunch on the north porch, overlooking the patio, garden and lawn. A small bar and bathroom are also located on the main floor.
Front and back staircases lead to the four bedrooms. The first has a queen bed and private bathroom. The second also has a queen bed and private bathroom. The third has a pair of twin beds. The fourth has a single twin. These bedrooms share a bathroom. A small study (which could be used as an additional bedroom) and a laundry room are also located on this floor.
The Woodstock Area
The house is convenient to many nearby attractions. A four minute walk from the house, you'll find the village center full of unique upscale shops: grocer, baker, butcher, pharmacy, clothing boutiques, jewelry store, book shops and many art and antique galleries. The town's art council hosts visiting performers and weekend movies in the historic Town Hall Theater. Museums, parks, and hiking trails are also within walking distance from the house. You could park the car and not get in it for a week-if you could resist the area's beautiful drives.
Vermont has one of the most vibrant cottage industries in the country and stores are teeming with handcrafted products. You can find crafts people selling anything you might want, from quilts to hand-hooked rugs, maple syrup to salsa. Thankfully, Vermont has largely escaped mass franchising. You could spend your vacation exploring unique stores and restaurants and never go near a shopping mall.
Located on the Ottauqueechee River, in the lush green hills of central Vermont, Woodstock offers visitors a taste of Vermont's history”, culture and small-town charm. The surrounding hills are laced with miles of winding dirt roads, where you can get lost on purpose and enjoy it. Green mountains dotted with classic farmhouses have been attracting homeowners and visitors for years.
Easily reached by bus, train, or plane, Woodstock is only a 1/2-hour drive from Dartmouth College or White River Jct., 1 1/2 hours from Manchester Airport, 2 1/2 hours from the Boston Airport or 5-6 hours from NYC.
