Traditional Village House in Herault Valley

Our house is a traditional 'maison de village' at the very heart of an old village founded by St Benoit in medieval times.
We have a 'terrain' outside the village where we have created a beautiful garden.
The accomodation is on two floors - the living space runs the length of the first floor and includes sitting and dining areas and kitchen, with a comfortable bathroom at the base of the stairs.
These lead up to the main double bedroom and a second bedroom with a single bed. Next to this a door opens onto the upstairs terrace where you can eat, drink, lounge and sunbathe.
In the summer months we spend most of our time at our garden so are able to make our house available to guests. The ground floor of the house as in all these old houses is a stone vaulted 'cave', traditionally used for storing wine, olives, rabbits etc and tools. We keep this for own use and hand over the rest of the house above to our guests.
Aniane and nearby St Guilhem le Desert are historic villages that have grown around the two abbeys founded in the time of Charlemagne. They are at the foot of the beautiful Herault Gorge - under the bridge of the Pont du Diable is a beach where you can swim in the river.
Less than half an hour's drive is the vibrant city of Montpellier with its museums, art galleries and concert halls. Other important museums are at Sete and Lodeve.
Though Aniane is a small village, within one or two minutes walk from our house you'll find a butcher, renowned for miles around, a pharmacy, a greengrocer, a village store, a hardware store, 2 hairdressers, 3 bakeries and half a dozen restaurants/cafes.
Just outside the village there are three 'guingettes' or open air restaurants, one on the banks of the river, another turned into an extraordinary sandcovered 'beach' with tropical huts. High up on a hill above the town the old Observatory has been restored and now welcomes amateur astronomers and those who simply want to dine under the stars in their 'guingette'. The food at all of them is excellent - and excellent value.
There is a market in the village every Thursday and a larger one at the next town, Gignac, every Saturday.
You can reach the sea in less than an hour - at Carnon, Sete, Marseillan and Frontignan. Just inland from the sea are the famous 'etangs' - inland salt water lakes teeming with seabirds and flamingoes, and, at Bouzigues, renowned for their oysters and seafood.
The Herault is the most important wine growing area in the south of France and the wine makers around Aniane enjoy world renown.
And so much more ........ you must come and stay and find out why we live here!

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: We moved to Aniane from the city of Montpellier in 2006 to be in the country and to create a garden. We had known the village for many years as we have been exporting pottery from the next door village St Jean de Fos and nearby Anduze for over 15 years. We run a business designing, importing and exporting products for the garden worldwide - but our speciality is the pottery of this region where it has been made since roman times and before. We share our house with Dusty the cat but if you don't want her company she stays down stairs asleep. Five more cats live at our garden and allow us to share it with them. When we are not working in the business Catriona is a gardener and Charles an artist.
