Year Purchased: 1953
About the owner: The house was built in 1905 by the American ambassador to Egypt. My parents bought the house in 1953. It sits high on a hill overlooking Katama Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The House of Winds is the ideal place to vacation. The furnishings are eclectic, from antiques to wooden hatch door cover coffee tables. My father wrote his first bestseller (The Hidden Persuaders) in the middle bedroom. My mother, an artist, infused the house with her style. She painted the family history onto the staircase. Friends of the family, who happened to be New Yorker cartoonists painted murals on a wall. A large Tom Maley sculpture of Martha and her vines hangs over one of the houses five fireplaces. Whale vertebrae, found from a beached whale in the 1950s rest beneath the sculpture. It is truly a unique home. a short walk down the hill leads to a private beach. There are many trails for walking across chappaquiddick that lead to breath taking vistas.
