My family and I enjoyed a beautiful week in this house. Three comfortable, clean bedrooms - we could hear the boats in the harbor from the upstairs Master bedroom in the mornings, a newly renovated bathroom, large living area and fully supplied kitchen - everything we needed for cooking dinners. Really loved the bikes that were available. Our four kids rode to Seawall most mornings while my husband and I drank coffee on the porch. The boys spent several evening fishing from the town dock which is one block away - walking distance from the house - they caught a few Mackerel? I think and saw some kids catching squid. Really cool! We didn't experience any trouble with the ants as were mentioned in the last review so the owners must have taken care of that problem. We had bonfires by the backyard pond - it was super relaxing and beautiful. We will definitely stay here again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children.

The house was very charming and comfortable. It was well decorated and we enjoyed the hammock on the porch tremendously. It was conveniently located, although it was on a road that was hard to bike or walk, nearby roads were much easier. The biggest problem with the house is that the yard was absolutely unusable because of the tremendous red ant problem. We had small children with us and they were covered in itchy bites after a short time playing in the yard. We were quite disappointed that we would not be able to have a nightly fire by the pond because of this. Despite wiping down the kitchen with disinfecting wipes several times a day, the ants were in the kitchen as well which was just gross.Owner response: Oh no! We are so sorry for the red ant trouble. When we lived in the house from 1998 to 2002, we had a mild red ant problem which we treated every Spring and then had no problems for the summer. It sounds like the problem has increased especially since they were inside the house. We have called an exterminator and are scheduling the lawn to be treated for a second time this year. We apologize for the fact you were unable to use the lawn. Since you enjoyed the house and perhaps might be willing to give us a second chance, we would be willing to offer you another week at a 30% discount next summer. The fire pit by the pond is so fun and I would love for you to enjoy it! Sincerely, Kirstie Kari PS ~ 2013 We have had the exterminators back after a very wet spring and they will come again before renters arrive. We don't expect there will be a problem this year. We stayed here after the 1st visit from the exterminators, and our 2 boys played freely across the entire lawn with no problems. Thanks to all for their patience ~ Kirstie

Our family of 5 (with kids 18, 15 & 12) spent 10 days at this house and enjoyed every minute. This house has a lovely "lived in" feel and a bit of history to it, and we all felt completely comfortable there from the moment we arrived. The property manager went out of her way to check on us during our stay to make sure we had everything we needed. We made frequent use of the hammock and porch chairs, the bar-b-q grill in the back yard, and the plentiful books. There are loads of towels, & a full-size washer & dryer. There are plenty of dishes & glassware. Cooking equipment is not lavish but certainly sufficient if you want to eat in (which we did!). Scottys restaurant is within walking distance and other restaurants are just a short drive away if you want to eat out (which we also did!). The location is great; we enjoy the 'quiet side' of Mt. Desert and the central location of Southwest Harbor makes it just a short journey to get anywhere on the island. The free bus (Bar Harbor to Bass Harbor route) stops right around the corner. The neighbors were really nice too. We loved the fact that there was no TV, but there is a DVD player if you want to watch a movie (bring your own DVDs). Our deposit check was returned very promptly. Can't wait to visit this house again!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We spent the holidays at Southwest Harbor House. All the furnishings had been replaced since we stayed here in the summer of 2009. It was cold and snowy outside but toasty warm indoors by the wood stove. There is plenty of room for our family of 8. We put the kids upstairs and we take one of the queen-sized futons in the downstairs. We love this 1903 farmhouse, inside and out! We were told the kitchen and bathroom were being redone for our week this summer ~ we can't wait to come again!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
