Designer modernist apartment on the Golden Lane Estate: an iconic emblem of British architecture.
The apartment is 2-floors. Downstairs we have a large open living space with wooden floors, huge windows and a door to the balcony. Its airy and colourful - we find it a very happy space to live in.
The balcony is south-facing and very sunny. It makes the perfect spot for eating outside, and enjoying the huge view of the sky. On a balmy summer's evening it can be quite romantic!
Upstairs we have two light bedrooms, both with large windows, wooden floors and comfortable double beds. The South-facing room has a windows across an entire wall. The North-facing room has a small balcony.
We refitted the kitchen last year with new work surfaces, cupboards and appliances. There is also a large window into the rest of the flat, giving it a lovely open-plan feel.
The bathroom is modern and really light. It's not huge, but its covered in skylights which make it very sunny and airy. We refitted it this year, with new bath, toilet, basin and shower.
The Golden Lane Estate complex (in which the flat is situated) has won multiple design & architecture awards, in view of its importance as an example of residential housing. There is a cafe, art gallery, pool, gym, tennis court, dry cleaners, hairdressers and grocery store - all within the complex. It has become the benchmark for architects all over the world.
Overall, its an incredibly quiet place to live. The woman who sold it to us described it as 'an oasis of calm right at the centre of the city'. Its also extremely safe: entering the building requires keyfob access, in addition to a video entryphone system. The neighbours are also extremely friendly and helpful.
The parallel street has a great food market every weekday, with restaurants that you can sit outside to take in authentic London life. We also enjoy wandering down to the Barbican cultural centre, having a glass of wine by the fountains, before catching a movie, stage production or concert. While the flat itself is located on a really quiet estate, you'll find some of the best things London has to offer right on your doorstep: you'll find plenty to do without even having to take any transport.
All this will make your stay here really happy and relaxed!

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2003
About the owner: Vanessa is a documentary filmmaker, Jeremy is a visual artist. We love living in the centre of London, and taking full advantage of all the great attractions on our doorstep. We have been married for 2 years, and have a baby boy called Griffin.
Why the Owner Chose City of London:
London is a really big city. So we decided it would make sense to be right in the centre of it - so everything was easily accessible. And it is! It means we enjoy living in London so much more.
Secondly, this housing complex really is one-of-a-kind: Jeremy's dad is an architect. All the architects want to live here, because of its design credentials - there must be at least 20 in our block!
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
We love strolling past St Pauls to the River Thames - it takes about 10 minutes. Once there, we find ourselves at Tate Modern, so we'll take in an exhibition, or drink a coffee at the cafe on the roof.
From there, its another 10 minute walk to the SouthBank Centre, where there are theatres, galleries, concert halls, cafes and restaurants. Oh, and the London Eye. So that's a nice thing to be close to!
In the evening, we often drop out of the apartment to visit the Barbican - there are always inspirational things happening there. We grab a quick bite at their (new and very trendy) cafe, before catching a film, seeing some dance, theatre or a concert.
Up the road - towards Shoreditch - are most of London's nightlife spots: bars, clubs, music venues etc. You'll see all the hip folk who are photographed in magazines, and looking desperately cool! To be honest, we don't go out to them much any more, preferring a little tapas place, and maybe a quick drink in a romantic pub!
