Relax in privacy and luxury at The Rostel, a private home in the heart of Dunsmuir's historic downtown district. This 19th century building, the city's oldest structure, has been totally renovated by its owners.
Tastefully appointed with modern amenities, The Rostel features bamboo hardwood floors, a fully equipped JenAir kitchen with concrete countertops, beautifully appointed bathrooms with radiant heating in the floors, 14 foot ceilings that show off the building's elegant brickwork, a private deck and laundry room with washer and dryer.
The Rostel Building was built in 1896 by Herman Rostel and housed Dunsmuir's first hardware store. The original building was gutted by the Dunsmuir Fire of 1903 but was immediately rebuilt in the form it stands today. It served over the years as a boarding house and bar, but is most fondly remembered by the locals as the Rostel Pub and Cafe.
We, and the Rostel's previous owner, architect Vern Sneed, worked hard to restore the building to its original condition. Today, what was once a pub and cafe is now a modern home with quaint office space on the ground floor.
The Rostel is listed on the National Historic Register as part of the Dunsmuir Historical Commercial District and has several unique exterior features. The lower front elevation is constructed of cast iron columns and beams manufactured by Mesker Brothers Front Builders from St. Louis, Missouri. Some details bear the Mesker Brothers moniker and have a patent date stamp of 1887. It is the only example of a cast iron storefront left in Siskiyou County. The upper story is sheathed with Mesker's architectural sheet metal and adorned with a detail level rarely found. The balance of the building was constructed in load bearing masonry walls with native Douglas Fir timbers and hand built trusses.
Because it is our home, The Rostel is available in turn-key condition. All you need to bring are groceries and clothing. Guests will be greeted by our neighbors, Joe and Lisa, who will open the home and describe how everything works and, if your stay is more than three days, provide housekeeping services.
Located on Sacramento Avenue, just a block from world-famous Cafe Maddalena and across the street from Amtrak, the two story Rostel is offered as either a one bedroom, one and a half bath (for two guests), or a two bedroom, two and a half bath (for four or more guests) home with laundry on a daily or weekly basis. Minimum stay is two nights.
An enclosed, locked downstairs porch offers a perfect location for guests to store bikes, fishing rods and waders, golf clubs and ski equipment.
Rates are $150 /night, $1000/week for one bedroom. or $180/night, $1200/week for two bedrooms. In lieu of a damage deposit, a non-refundable Property Damage Protection insurance policy ($49) will be added to the bill. Please, no smoking, no pets, no fish cleaning.
The location is ideal for fishermen (walking distance to the Sac and a block from Ted Fay Flyshop), train buffs (across the street from Amtrak), skiers and golfers (a quick ride up the hill to Mt. Shasta).
Sacramento Avenue parallels Dunsmuir Avenue and is home to a number of art galleries and curio shops.

The Rostel is a delight. Great amenities, beautifully decorated and the location is fantastic. It's a block or two from anything you'd want in Dunsmuir and yet has a secluded feel.

Cozy Stay in a Historic Building!
We stayed for two nights at the Rostel in Dunsmiur. We were immediately struck by the high ceilings and brick walls. The place is bright and tastefully decorated with a great mix of historic and modern elements. There are so many additional touches that the pictures don't show. We loved the old corrugated tin inlaid above the kitchen, the mix of weathered barn siding and colorful brick was a great combination. We love to cook and found everything we needed and more in the kitchen. This place is outfitted with more dishes, spices, and food than most rentals. The bedroom was cozy with a comfortable bed and the bathrooms are stylish with bright tile, radiant floor heating, and modern fixtures. The gentle hum of the next door train station was a pleasant sound, not intrusive. Next time we'll come down for the sunny weather. Fortunately the place heated up quick and we enjoyed watching the library of dvd's and playing cards while it stormed outside. Thanks Grid and Karen!

Whether it's watching the trains from our porch, fishing the world class waters of the upper Sacramento River, hiking, or enjoying the cuisine at one of Dunsmuir's surprisingly good restaurants, we find it a welcome respite from the noise and traffic of urban living.
