We rented for a week to be near relatives. We found the cabin to be in very good condition and in a desirable location. It was clean and comfortable for us (in our nineties). Enjoyed stay. Owners delightful couple and very helpful. Smith Lake is of good size, and view is pleasing. Large trees in front of cabin create some shade, and there are seven metal steps down to the lake. The area around and infront of cabins at the location is well maintained. Only a few miles to stores in Alexandria.

The weekend of June 15, 2012, a buddy and I rented this cabin for a "man weekend" away from the wife and girlfriend for some fishing and fun, inter alia. The location is perfect. It is about 2.5 hours from the twin cities. A nice easy drive. It is not all that far off 94, just through Osakis. The overnight rates are completely reasonable and attractive for what you are getting. Smith Lake is beautiful. The cabin is west facing so you get spectacular sunsets. The fishing was superb. We caught a ton of fish (bass, northern, and pan fish; although, the walleye and crappie escaped us this weekend, but we will be back to find locate them). The cabin is a quaint little place (2 bedrooms) perfectly situated about 25 yards +/- from the lake. It has all the comforts of home, but at a cabin that has a rustic feel to it. The weekend we were there it was quiet and the lake was not super busy, which was nice for us. We rented a boat from in town (Alexandria). Unfortunately, we had troubles with the boat from the get go. The owners of the cabin, a husband and wife team, were exceptionally helpful, as were other members of their family who have cabins nearby. I was very impressed with how we were treated as guests. I was not expecting that level of helpfulness and resourcefulness. They got our motor running on at least two different occasions. We cannot thank them enough for all their help. We definitely did not want to fish from the dock and they ensured that did not happen. The owners directed us to some very good fishing holes that we were successful in snagging a lot of fish from. The only downside is the futon in the smaller of the two bedrooms is not all that comfortable. We flipped for the bigger room and nicer bed and you guessed it, I lost. Dang! Nevertheless, it was an amazingly fun, action packed weekend and the futon certainly did not hamper the weekend one iota. I would recommend this place to anyone who asked, and in fact, I plan on bringing my entire family (wife and four kids) up later this summer if there is availability. R.
