Lovely place and perfect for us

Guest: Liz (Tacoma, WA, US)
Date of Stay: 03/26/12 Review Submitted: 04/15/12

Unlike a previous reviewer's comments, I thought the cottage was exceptionally clean. We rarely saw a bug and enjoyed the little geckos that help keep everything bug free. The bed was amazing and waking up with a cool breeze was wonderful. It was very private and we rarely saw anyone else on the property. It was a great location for getting to the north or east shore and a beautiful private beach was just a 15 minute walk away. Mary and I would definitely stay here again. Mahalo Harvest.

Owner response:Thank you both for staying at our Lemurian Gardens Cottage. I am so happy that you had such a great time on Kauai and in our cottage. I hope you do return some day. Mahalo, Harvest

Very cute & private cottage

Date of Stay: 02/20/12 Review Submitted: 02/24/12

Adorable cottage, very bright and airy and the perfect bit of privacy. The cottage is very easy to find off the main road and despite being on owners property, it felt very private and tropical. The owners popped in briefly to make sure that things were OK and gave great advice to local eateries and beaches but other than that, they gave us a wide bearth. Amazing bed with the softest sheets and very nice pillows, great fresh fruit from their orchard and the kitchen had all the things one would need. The bathroom does need a bit of an update- but it was very clean. After a day on the crowded beach and being around all the tourists- it was nice to get some quiet privacy. If you are looking for a place to rest, get some quiet time and a bit of jungle romance, its the best value on the island!

Owner response:Mahalo for staying with us on Kauai. We are happy that you enjoyed the cottage and did want to let you know that in early April the bathroom floor is being re-tiled and a new beautiful vanity put in. a hui hou, Harvest

An OK place to stay

Guest: Marti (Shoreline, WA )
Date of Stay: 01/26/12 Review Submitted: 03/13/12

We stayed (2 adults) in this house for 2 weeks. The other reviews rave about its "quaintness". We call them inefficiencies: tiny bar-sized kitchen sink, very little counter space, ONE shelf which was full of dishes so we had to secure our food elsewhere to make sure the ants didn't get it, a couch with BROKEN boards so we had to add cushions so we wouldn't sink to the floor, nice bed but too big and clumsey for the space, not-so-clean when you looked around at spider webs, a dryer in a shed that was NOT vented (dangerous!) and a washer that empties its water onto the ground - with a stream 50 feet away!! Not too environmentally correct. It is a good location and the owners are very nice, but just don't be fooled by the dreamy write-up in this ad. As long as you know it needs an overhaul, you will be fine.

Owner response:Aloha Jay, I agree that a bigger sink would be wonderful but our County has regulations about the size of the sink allowed - in this case - bar sized and also the length of the counter. We did however fix the couch issue and it is very comfortable now. The dryer is definitely vented. I am happy to send you a photo of it if you would like. We also only use Organic Bio-degradable laundry soap that seeps into the foliage long before it gets close to the stream. All of our guests comment on how comfortable the bed is. I feel that a Queen size bed is the smallest size that is comfortable for two people. My cleaner does a very thorough job cleaning the cottage between guests and at certain times of the year outside, harmless spiders can spin webs very quickly. We are always happy to come over for a quick sweep if we are asked. Mahalo for your comments, Harvest

A wonderful place to stay

Date of Stay: 09/24/11 Review Submitted: 10/03/11

We just got back from an 8-day stay in the cottage. It was a truly lovely place to stay. The cottage is very tastefully decorated (as others have noted, even nicer than in the photos), cozy and comfortable, and we felt very much at home there. It was a perfect place to relax after long days exploring the island. We grilled and ate on the lanai quite a few nights of our stay and also really enjoyed the hot tub, especially after the more strenuous hikes we did. The owner, Harvest, is very hospitable and helpful and gave us complete privacy at the same time. We really enjoyed the small touches, from the coffee, chocolates and amazing fruit from the garden awaiting us when we arrived, to beach towels, chairs, mats and the cooler to take to the beach. The kitchen was very well equipped, and there was not a thing that we were missing despite cooking there most of our stay. Finally, the location is extremely pretty and peaceful. The cottage and its immediate surrounding area, as well as the town of Kilauea, gave us a small glimpse of the "local flavor" of the North Shore. This was exactly what we were looking for and more. We'll be recommending the cottage to our friends and would definitely want to stay there again on our next visit to Kauai.

Harvest, thank you so much for creating such a beautiful and peaceful space to luxuriate in during my nine day retreat. I thoroughly recommend the green cottage. It's prettier than the pictures show. The bed was a pleasure...comfortable and had a sumptuous feel with cotton and down. The hot tub was therapeutic after long hikes. I loved having a compost bucket and being able to recycle organic waste to the orchard's compost. I felt safe and at home. I definitely plan on returning.

Owner response:Mahalo Deborah-Ruth ! It was a delight meeting you. I am so happy that your retreat was more than you had hoped for. I hope that you return again. a hui hou malama pono, Harvest

We loved staying here! Private, beautiful property, jungle and outdoor sounds all around. Large, more than ample for 2 people, windows on all the walls. Great outdoor deck with a hot tub which we used nightly. Owners left coffee, candy and fruit for us on arrival. Washer and dryer very convenient!!!! No, it's not on the beach, but such a wonderful experience! Several beaches are within a short driving distance. Not much to Kilauea town, but Hanalei isn't far. A VERY tranquil and beautiful part of the island. So perfect for us, we stayed a week and could have stayed longer.

Perfect Honeymoon Location

Guest: Greg (Oahu, Hawaii)
Date of Stay: 06/28/11 Review Submitted: 07/06/11

This was the absolute perfect spot for our honeymoon. The Cottage is easy to find, but still feels so private. You feel like you are home when you are here. The hot tub was amazing, the gardens are fantastic and the hostess was very gracious. Harvest came over to the house to personally deliver a flower for us to use as a centerpiece for our romantic dinner. Other than that she allowed us to have our privacy. The personal touches in the house made it even better, the helpful book of area attractions and local information saved us a lot of time flipping through guide books (which she also provided). We could not have asked for a better place to stay, we plan on heading back there when we get a chance. A big mahalo to harvest for offering such an amazing place.

Owner response:Mahalo Greg & Maya ! We loved having you as guests and were thrilled that you added so many extras ( in-house massages, dinner catered by local chefs, etc) to your stay. You are welcome back any time. a hui hou, Harvest

Loved the little cottage - a perfect peaceful solitary spot to be based, on this wonderful island. Watching sunrises and whales at the lighthouse, surrounded by whirling boobies, visiting the local beaches, especially Rock Quarry, our favorite and only a couple of miles away - eating fresh fish every night, beautiful Na Pali and restaurants in Hanalei - bike rentals, trip to Waimea Canyon (was shorter than we thought) - it's all good. Thanks so much, will recommend the place!

Aloha Harvest, Thank you for making our 40th anniversary celebratory holiday in Kauai so enjoyable. The welcome gift of fruit, coffee and chocolates was very thoughtful. Thanks also for sharing the veggies from your garden. The amenities in the cottage, the exceptionally comfortable bed, the privacy and the idyllic surroundings made for a perfect, relaxing vacation. Since this was a rather short vacation and we did not get a chance to hike the trails we will surely be back. Thank you for your hospitality. Dan and Gita Colorado

Owner response:Aloha Gita & Dan - It was very enjoyable meeting you two and hearing your stories Gita of how much Kauai reminded you of your childhood home. I hope you get a chance to come back and hike the amazing Kauai trails. a hui hou, Harvest

Better than expected!

Guest: Gabi (Washington State)
Date of Stay: 01/20/11 Review Submitted: 02/09/11

We knew Kauai had to be nice, but we couldn't believe how wonderful the Green Cottage and our hostess were. Everything the listing says is true. It's a beautiful, quiet setting. The beds are SO comfortable, all the expected comforts were there, and it was absolutely spotlessly clean. What I found equally enchanting was the thoughtfulness of our hostess. There was every kind of kitchen equipment we could dream of needing -,not just a coffee maker, but a French press!. Beach chairs and snorkeling equipment were provided. We were invited to use greens from the garden. And on arrival, in addition to a box of chocolates and a bag of Hawaiian coffee, there was a bowl of fresh fruit and fragrant flowers. We couldn't have felt more comfortable or welcomed. The only trouble was ... we had to leave!

Peaceful Cottage in Paradise

My husband and I spent a wonderful few days here in January. We loved the cottage! It was so quiet and peaceful and surrounded by such beautiful green landscaping. When we arrived we found the cottage clean and fully furnished just as described. When we weren't out site-seeing and playing, we loved coming home to this temporary home away from home, and on rainy evenings we even used the relaxing hot tub. This was a lovely spot to spend time in, and we will definitely make a return trip. Thank you for everything, and a special thanks for the lovely gift basket!

Not what I expected.......

Guest: Nik (Haden, Queensland, Australia)
Date of Stay: 12/12/10 Review Submitted: 01/14/11

The cottage is in a lovely location - albeit it is rather run down to the point where I would not recommend going there on a honeymoon. In fact I would never go there again or recommend it unless you are paying for a budget place. It is not quite as private as I expected and feel like I have been ripped off for the price v quality. Cars coming and going past the cottage into the main house quite frequently so I felt the need to shut the curtains for privacy. You cannot enjoy the deck at all as it leaks everywhere when it is raining, the BBQ was very very dirty like it had not been cleaned in 5 years and no hot plate so not real suitable for cooking only grill plate. Needs a walkway to the laundry as iin the wet season extremly muddy and dark. Found a large bucket under the bathroom sink which was about to overflow from a drip in the tap. No carport or shelter when raining to get to and from cottage. Very disappointed we could not sit on the deck as we are really outdoors people and like to sit out under cover when raining to enjoy the ambience - but could not do this due to the leaks and wet furniture outside. No real place to actually put your suitcases or clothes either. I think the kitchen food stuffs left need to be sorted and old food items need to be thrown out - I did this as some of them looked like they had been there for 5 yrs... Great to have a gas stove to cook on as I love cooking but the utensils are not plentiful enough to utilise properly and sink too small to wash in without making a huge mess... On a positive note - spa is okay, mossies will attack you big time though. Bed was beautiful and linen nice. Wished now that I had of stayed at my second choice at Moolaa Beach. Especially as this was the longest part of our stay - 9 days...

Owner response:Most people realize that Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In the 17 years that we have been renting our cottage we have had 3 complaints and more importantly we have had hundreds of very satisfied guests ( note the reviews following this one). We do take criticism to heart and make changes where necessary. We want our guests to have an amazing experience at our cottage and on our wonderful island. Since our house is about 225 feet away from the cottage we always communicate to our guests to please let us know if there is anything we can do to make their stay better. I would like to go into detail about the issues that the guest mentioned about our cottage (only after they left) in hopes that a different perspective can be seen. The bathroom sink - the bucket had been there for a long time usually to hold sponges and cleaning supplies. There was a tiny leak (barely noticeable) but not enough of one to call a plumber and inconvenience the guests while they were there. If I had known that the leak had gotten so bad I would have called a plumber to fix it right away. As it was, I did not know about the extent of it until after the guests left, at which time a plumber came in and had to replace the faucet. The leaking lanai – there was a small leak over the hot tub. It had been pretty dry all summer and fall and we didn’t know of the extent of it. December was very rainy and we were unaware that the leak had gotten larger. This has also been repaired. Since the lanai is quite large, even with the rains and some wind there were dry areas and specifically a teak bench that could have been used to sit on. The BBQ - It has a hot plate on the side and is cleaned between guests. We certainly would have been happy to re clean it if we had know the guests weren't happy. The Fridge - Many guests have commented on appreciating having certain condiments left by other guests. We only keep the ones that are appropriate for reuse such as squeeze bottles, soy sauce, etc. We take the time to clean it out between each guest. Nothing has been in the refrigerator for very long. The kitchen sink - the sink is small but this is the“legal” size sink that we are allowed to have in our guest house based on County Law. We hope that you continue to read all of the wonderful reviews that we have gotten and choose to Believe in the Positive and choose to stay at Lemurian Gardens.

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon. All I can say is: "wow". We couldn't have asked for more! What we wanted was a quiet stay with lots of privacy: what we got was just that, not to mention how breathtakingly beautiful the land is. This is such a sweet little cottage! Clean, homey, comfortable bed and couch, good coffee maker (very important!). We loved the hot tub each evening after a long day of exploring. We loved that we could hear the sounds of the jungle at night and never got disturbed by anyone else. Harvest was available if we asked after her, but other than that we never saw a soul. This cottage is truly a slice of heaven, and I guarantee you will plot ways to stay forever like we did! Thanks Harvest!

We had the privilege of staying at the Green cottage in early June. We were on our honeymoon, unfortunately 3 days was not enough! The grounds are so beautiful and we had complete privacy and serenity! We enjoyed the hot tub every night! Inside is even cozier than the pictures display! We cooked in every night, even barbequed a fresh tuna that we bought off a local fisherman. We loved having our breakfast every morning out on the terrace! We will definetly be back, only will stay at least a week or 10 days next time! Super clean, Harvest was very accomodating and friendly!!! Loved it!!!

Date of Stay: 06/28/10 Review Submitted: 07/17/10

On the Garden Island, this is the Secret Garden! The property is very private, lush and tropical, giving this sparkling romantic cottage an atmosphere of total seclusion. Not only is the location convenient, it was ideal, as we traveled the island from on end to the other, and 'home' was just a short distance away. The amenities inside are plentiful, from the welcome fruit basket, coffee and nuts, to the spices, condiments, and fully functional kitchen (with the exception of the sink, which is small for pots and pans). The outside patio with jacuzzi was lovely, we enjoyed that added feature along with the convenience of beach chairs and ocean toys as well. Close to some of the best beaches on the North Shore, it doesn't get much better than this! I would certainly recommend the cottage to anyone looking for a quiet, peaceful getaway on Kauai....perfect for couples and newlyweds.

Charming and beautifully kept cottage... VERY RELAXING STAY!

Guest: Angie (Pleasanton, CA)
Date of Stay: 06/15/10 Review Submitted: 06/23/10

Harvest made my fiancé and I feel so welcome when we stayed in the guest cottage. The place is immaculate and very nicely decorated. We enjoyed the eclectic music selection and watched a couple of DVDs that were there for our use. The hot tub was SO relaxing, Harvest even stopped by to make sure we knew how to operate it. There are dishes and utensils for the kitchen and the grill as well. We grilled out one night and had dinner on the dining set that is outdoors. One thing that did catch me off guard were the friendly geckos visits. They are completely harmless and it is well known there that they find their way into even the million dollar homes. We had friends who were getting married that were staying in a huge home at the same time as us. They had geckos roaming the walls occasionally as well. Remember, the critters aren't a reflection of the property... they are just a part of the tropical paradise of Hawaii. Overall the stay at the cottage was wonderful and we LOVED the fact that we were just minutes away from several amazing beaches. Sincerely, Angie and James

The cottage was clean and comfortable, the hot tub was great, we especially enjoyed in the evenings when it rained. The beach chairs and boogie boards were so nice to have on hand and the fruits, coffee and chocolates were a great welcome gift! We found the location to be great for exploring the island, turn left at the highway to get to Princeville and Hanalei in minutes or turn right and head down to Kapaa, Lihue and Poipu which are only a little farther. Harvest came and greeted us when we arrived to make sure we were settled in and she came by just before we left to ask how our stay was. We could have gotten hold of her anytime if we needed to but there was no need. This is a great little place to get away from the hustle and bustle of real life lol. Dont hesitate to stay there if you can, we cannot wait to go back!! Thank you Harvest!!!

Dear Harvest & Jim, We are so happy to have found your "Green" cottage in your beautiful Lemurian Gardens! Admittedly, I was startled by the huge brown cane spider, but it ran away from me, so I looked it up and decided it was a beneficial room-mate, just like the assortment of cute geckos. We felt cool and comfortable here during the thankfully, uneventful Tsunami warning, too! After passing through Princeville and other resort towns, we felt very lucky to have all the luxury and beauty that you provide, indeed! It has been great to live like the locals, fixing our breakfasts and some dinners here, and became quite addicted to the Thai Fish Wraps at the Kilauea Fish Market. Thank you so much for your gift of coffee and chocolates, too!

We had a wonderful, relaxing stay, which was just what we needed. Particually enjoyed a simple home-like environment instead of a resort- fun to cook local fish and farmers market veggies! We enjoyed the rain on the rooftop at night and the cricketts. Good hiking, great beaches, and geckos. What more can I say?! Klauea Fish Market, great for lunch. Also, Hanalei is a great place to hang out- I want to livethere!

Harvest, Thank you so much for the hospitality. We were really blessed in choosing your cottage. The location, sounds, the town, and the awesome geckos keeping the mesquito population down. We had a great experience.

What a wonderful place to stay! So peaceful and relaxing. We loved the beauty of the gaden and loved walking around the neighborhood. It was so nice to have a fully stoked kitchen- we could cook fresh fish and have breakfast overlooking the garden- so nice. The North Shore is so wonderful and amazingly beauitful!! We loved discovering the area & then retreating back to the cottage. Thanks so much!

Harvest, Many Many thanks for leting us book your accomidations last minute. Being away from all the "typical" tourists of the Island was a priceless experience. I really hit the ground running when we got back but I wanted to let you know we loved staying at your rental. Totally quiet, the kitchen was great and I have not been so relaxed in at least 15 years. Thanks so much, David

Thank you for the wonderful accomodations at the Lemurian Gardens Cottage. We loved it. Kauai is an amazing place... and we loved staying on the North Shore. We left a beach umbrella and a beach cooler for future guests.

We spent a wonderful 5 nights at the cottage in May and it was just what we needed. The location was perfect as we were close to Hanalei and Princeville, but definitely off the beaten path. It was small enough to be cozy, but big enough that we didn't feel trapped. It was great having a full kitchen and big fridge. We ate just about every breakfast and dinner there. What a wonderful and relaxing adventure!

We are totally relaxed in your cottage after our long trip! Thank you for your kind message....We totally fell in love with this wonderful garden island and your lovely cottage!! The view is just so beautiful!! By the way, we read that Jim and Harvest are experts of Real Estate in Kauai. We are looking for a small cottage on this island if possible. Could we talk with them while we are here? Regards, Kim and Yuri

We just checked out of your cottage in Kauai yesterday. We really enjoyed our stay. It was so quiet, restful and romantic. The fresh fruit bowl on the table was a nice touch. We also enjoyed the yummy fresh ripe oranges (tangerines?) we picked in your little orchard. Such a beautiful place. And, the little hot tub on the private deck was great too and so romantic. Your little cottage is wonderful and the only sounds we heard were the lovely birds and the roosters.

Just wanted to say mahalo; I had a great time on Kaua'i. The cottage had everything one could want or need. You even supplied a cat! The location was ideal; I found the North Shore the most attractive side of the island by far. Boogie boarding at Hanalei Bay; it doesn't get much better than that!

Enchanting hardly starts to describe this hidden gem. One might call it noisy with the ocean in the background, the birds close by, and the frogs calling, but talk about making you aware of life. Then there are the plantings in the garden. That's all before you check out the beach (scene of movies no doubt) which had turtles and fair snorkeling in Feb/Mar. Practical and hidden away, this house will give anyone a boost at enjoying life. Not luxurious although essentials like great bed and everything working in order so truly functional, this house is one you just like coming back to. Local beaches are all great too, so if you tire of the one you kayak to in this case, there's another round the reef. Be prepared for a dirt road finish to the house, a greeting from roosters and egrets. Lazy? There's an endless pool too. Feeling is the opposite of condo, and soon you fit right in with the few locals. Located on what I consider the prettiest side of the island, the cottage is between Hanalei and Kapaa, and for my mind you cannot do much better than that.
