Lenox house description

This historic Lenox beauty is a mere four block walk to the town's center and a stone's throw to Tanglewood. Built in 1892 by E.E. Parsons, the home is reminiscent of a bygone era with lazy summers spent on the
wrap-around porch greeting neighbors and passersby. E.E. Parsons daughter married into the Kennedy family, for which the town's nature preserve, Kennedy Park, is named. The property on which the house stands today abuts the 180-acre park, with its extensive network of groomed trails and scenic overlooks. Access to the park is right out the back door.

This piece of Lenox history was lovingly restored to its original grandeur between 2005-2007. A complete update of the services, systems, interior, exterior, as well as new bathrooms and kitchens, were executed under the discriminating direction of the home's owner/designer. Quality workmanship, with an emphasis on authenticity, abounds throughout this 4 bedroom/4 bath Victorian home.

Interior : The interior appointments in this property: Gleaming, restored hardwood floors throughout the first floor; Plush 100% wool carpeting on the second floor; Granite countertops, energy star stainless appliances and custom cabinetry in the kitchen; Baths have either a combination of hardwood floors with ceramic tiling and/or tumbled marble; Built-in custom cabinetry in the bedrooms.

Exterior: A great location: 2 minutes to Tanglewood; Walk to town; Abutting the nature preserve; Four minutes to gourmet food shopping; A lovely and private rear bluestone patio surrounded by a dry-laid rock retaining wall and beautiful perennial gardens; A rocking chair, wrap-around porch.

                  Location

                  Car: Necessary

The E.E. Parsons House is located four blocks from the quaint village of Lenox, with its myriad of upscale boutiques, fine restaurants, taverns, art galleries and historic sites. Tanglewood, summer home of the BSO, is a stone's throw away. If you're game, you can walk or take a bike to the grounds. For nature enthusiasts, the miles of groomed trails at Kennedy Park is literally out the back door and abuts the property. Daily hikes or running is safe and pleasant along the many trails. More trails to check out at are nearby Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary. Swimming and beaches at either Stockbridge Bowl or Laurel Lake are a two minute drive. A short car ride (five minutes) north you'll find all your supplies at the larger grocery stores. Please check out our local, organic grocer, Guido's, with all their gourmet selections. In winter, we are a five minute drive to Bousquet Ski Center and about 20 minutes to Butternut and Catamount.

Other Activities: Lenox is the crown jewel of the Berkshires; The epicenter of a county rife with recreational and cultural offerings. Music lovers the world over flock here to enjoy summer performances at Tanglewood, home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, dance performances at Jacob's Pillow, theater at Shakespeare & Co, Barrington Stage and Berkshire Theatre Festival. Once home to Gilded Age 'cottages', tours are available of these historic homes today, such as Edith Wharton's Mount and Naumkeag. Spend time at our world-class museums, such as Norman Rockwell Museum, Clark Art Institute and Chesterwood. For outdoor activities, the area has miles of hiking trails along the Appalachian Trail and our mountain ridges. Biking is a big pastime here on the old carriage roads and through quaint villages. There are a few 'rail trails' that are also worth checking out. Plus, we're only 2.5 hours from NYC and Boston!

Golf: There are no less than 10 golf courses in the Berkshires. We are located minutes from the Golf Courses at Stockbridge, Pittsfield, and the Cranwell Spa. Slightly further afield (20 min) is Egremont Gold Course.

Ski: Winter offers excellent skiing at four area mountains: Bousquet, Jiminy Peak, Butternut and Catamont. There is also ice fishing on many area lakes, as well as skating, both indoor and out.

                  Owner info

                  Year Purchased: 2004

About the owner: Hi All, I originally grew up in Orange County, NY in a community very similar to the Berkshires. Upon graduation, I moved to New York City where I began a 20-year career in the travel industry. During the course of those years, I worked in nearly every aspect of travel with a discriminating clientele. My husband and I moved to the Berkshires in 1998 and purchased an historic, four family building in Great Barrington, which I converted to short term, furnished vacation and corporate rental business. I ran that business for 12 years, with great success. In 2004, we purchased this Lenox beauty, which required an extensive gut renovation. Between 2005-2007, we rebuilt this house from foundation to chimney. At this point, I studied and passed my Massachusetts Real Estate and Construction Supervisor exams. I now work for Berkshire Property Agents in Great Barrington - the number 1 sales agency in South County for two years running - and have my own development business, Green Gables. In 2008, I was diagnosed with Stage IIIC breast cancer. Through drive, research and commitment, I beat it in six months - without surgery. I have started a non-profit. WIN (Women's Integrative Network) to enlighten women struggling with cancer about options and tools available to them utilizing integrative medicine. In 2011, I turned my attention to the renovation of our historic multi-family building in Great Barrington, which I spearheaded as designer, developer and general contractor. The building is now on the market as four gorgeous and spacious (1100-1600 SF) condominiums, located four blocks to town on a quiet, dead end street. With my background in the service industries of hospitality and travel, as well as design and construction, I know what travelers want - comfort, convenience, cleanliness, dependability and location.

                  Why the Owner Chose Lenox:
The reason I decided to buy this house originally was to renovate and sell it. However, I knew that if selling were not possible, we could always rent it because of the fabulous location. We are truly at the epicenter of all the cultural and natural offerings of the Berkshires. The main gate for Tanglewood is only 1.5 miles away, we have 3 or more golf courses nearby, there are several cultural sites in Lenox either walking distance or within a few miles. Lenox is also right near all the summer stage theater. My husband and I are outdoor enthusiasts and we love the easy access to hiking, biking and swimming. The town has several area beaches on two lakes within a two minute drive. There is a great rail trail about 15 minutes away. My husband and I ride there a lot Spring through Fall. Lenox is nicely situated in the middle of the county, which means it is easy to access attractions north and south. Additionally, the lot on which the house sits abuts the nature preserve. I use those trails every day and can't imagine living without them now. I can go to the grocery store everyday, which is important for us because we eat a very fresh and seasonal, vegan diet. I walk to town nearly every day to go to the post office or run an errand. It is really just a great location.
