Baltimore apartment description

This apartment is centrally located in the Historic Mount Vernon Cultural District. The convenient location allows you and your companion to tour Baltimore and easily visit Washington DC without the need for a car.

The 'Dickinson House' was built in 1879 for John S. Dickinson, and stayed in the family until the 1950's. Many of the original features of this building have survived, and have even been enhanced with an extensive 18-month renovation and preservation. The apartment now has many modern amenities, yet sits in an architectural gem.

After marveling at the 133-year-old details, you will tuck your luggage away and choose among hundreds of landmarks, restaurants and sites to start your venture.

The location is second-to-none! Only a 5-minute walk to Penn Station (Amtrak and MARC), you will have access to the rail artery of the East Coast for outings to Washington DC, day-trips to Philadelphia and treks to New York City. The Johns Hopkins Medical Institute shuttle stop is also there. You will be a 6-minute walk to the Baltimore Light Rail’s instant reach to the Camden Yards baseball stadium and the terminal doors of the BWI Airport. Best of all, the new Charm City Circulator stops 1 block away delivering you anywhere you want to go for free, via its direct route to the Inner Harbor, Downtown Baltimore, the Convention Center, and Federal Hill. It is frequent, free and has an accompanying iPhone app service! Should you decide to drive, simply rent a Zip Car located only 3 blocks away.

Explore historic Mt. Vernon! Tour the first cathedral in America, the Basilica of the Assumption, climb the stairs of the Washington Monument—the nation’s first memorial to George Washington, breathe in the architecture at the Peabody Library, discover the stained glass Tiffany windows of the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion, visit the exhibits of the Walters Art Museum. Each of these exquisite options are within walking distance and free to the public!

Interested in music? Walk to a concert at the Peabody Music Conservatory, an opera at the Lyric, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at the Meyerhof Symphony Hall or live music at a nearby gallery, pub or the park at Mount Vernon Place. Want to see a play, comedy show or movie? Walk to Center Stage, Spotlighters, the Everyman Theater or the Charles Theatre, then dine at some of the best-rated restaurants in Baltimore! Our personal favorites are The Brewer’s Art, The Helmand, Stang of Siam, Sofi’s Crepes and Tapas Teatro ... all within 1-5 blocks!

Starbucks, Chipotle and pizza from Iggies and Joe Squared are near, too!

Feel like cooking? Easily stock your apartment’s kitchen with our fold-up shopping cart and ingredients from 2 grocery stores within a 3 block radius. The kitchen has new granite countertops and is fully equipped.

The apartment has a private bathroom with shower, hair dryer and heated floor! It has a queen-sized bed, television, air conditioning and heat. A washer/dryer is expected soon. This place is ideal for tourists, visiting scholars, and traveling professionals.

                  Owner info

                  Year Purchased: 2010

About the owner: I love architecture, and I give food tours around Baltimore! I started leading Food Tours while in Philadelphia, and I didn't miss a beat when moving to Baltimore! I led my first tour for Charm City Food Tours just 36-hours after I'd moved. The tours are a treat to lead, and I'd recommend them to anyone. I have channelled my love of architecture into my company, da Vinci by Design. We import stairs from Italy that go into boutiques, custom homes, cultural institutions and condominiums. Though our home doesn't have one of these eye-catching stairs (yet), I work from an office on the 1st Floor. For my work, I travel to Italy a number of times a year, and I also travel to the locations of my installations (from Hawaii to Florida to California to New York City and State). I fell in love with a woman who worked in Baltimore, so we bought this house together and spent 18 months renovating and updating the house. Our relationship survived the remodel, and our home is quite a gem! I am training for a 10-mile run, and I very much enjoy going running in the morning with my rescued dog, Dulcinea.

                  Why the Owner Chose Baltimore:
My wife and I purchased the whole building. She has worked in Baltimore for a number of years, and I moved down from Philadelphia to join her. We have renovated the entire house and updated the apartments on each of the levels. We are living on one of the floors, but space is tight, and there is no space for a guest room. We wanted to have a place for our relatives to stay when they came to visit, so we thought to create a guest suite on the 1st Floor. After we finished the suite, we chose to make it available on VRBO, blocking off the days when family would be in town. So far we have enjoyed meeting the people who stay in our historic home. Since I moved from Philadelphia, I have loved the location. We are near the transportation nexus of Baltimore. Anywhere I want to go is just a short jaunt away! I ride the Circulator frequently; this free bus began about the time I moved to Baltimore, and is universally loved. Getting to the Inner Harbor, the Convention Center, Camden Yards, Federal Hill, Fells Point has never been easier. The Banner Line even brings you to and from Fort McHenry! I go to New York City for business, and I just walk to Penn Station (5 minutes) to catch either Amtrak or Bolt Bus. When friends come up from DC, they just hop on the MARC or Amtrak for a visit. Every time we fly from BWI, we roll our luggage to the Light Rail stop at Cultural Center (6 minutes), and ride the Light Rail right into the terminal (no parking and no shuttles). It's easy, and affordable ($1.60 per person). When I don't feel like cooking (I'm the chef in the family), we walk 1 1/2 blocks to Stang of Siam—the best Thai food in the city—or to dozens of other restaurants in Mount Vernon. I walk my dog, Dulcinea, past numerous historic, and architecturally stunning buildings. From the Mount Royal Train Station to wonderfully preserved 19th Century homes on N Calvert, beauty abounds!
