My family and I just returned from a lovely stay at the Sherwood Forest cabin. The great room is a spectacular family space, with lots of room to hang out and enjoy tv, games, or even a fire! The owner was so pleasant and answered all the questions we had. The kitchen was well-stocked and the kids loved the room with the 2 twin beds. The beds were very comfortable and it was so convenient to have a washer and dryer available. Sherwood Forest is a natural wonderland with convenient hiking trails, beautiful golf, and nice tennis courts. We also ventured out to DuPont Forest, Caesar's Head State Park, and the Blue Ridge Parkway, and having all of those outings within close proximity really gave the whole family some great memories together. I would not hesitate to recommend this cabin to my closest friends!!

Owner response: I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. I hope you and your family will come again soon. There are new things to see in every season! Sally

Our family needed a place to stay when my father in Brevard became suddenly ill. We immediately thought of Flying Squirrel, where my husband and I, and my brother's family, have stayed in the past. Fortunately the house was available and, as usual, Sally was fabulous to work with. She was very easy to communicate with about our changing needs and very understanding of the situation. Having a peaceful, familiar place to return to after long hours at the hospital made a sad and difficult situation easier. Our father died at age 96 and we were truly overwhelmed to receive a sympathy card from Sally after we returned. My parents enjoyed 20 years of retirement in Sherwood Forest and it has always been a special place full of special people. And we can't say enough about the caring treatment our father received from Transylvania Regional Hospital and the hospice nurses who work there.

Owner response: Thank you, Julie, for your kind review. Sherwood Forest and Brevard are very special places and my family is so fortunate to be a part of the area. I'm glad we were able to help at a difficult time and we look forward to other visits for your family when we hope that lovely memories of good times will help to heal the pain of your loss. Sally

The house was exactly as advertised and we definitely enjoyed the stay. It was nice to have the space to spread out the family a bit. The location is perfect if you're looking to be near Brevard but not in downtown and for us being close to Cedar Mountain was perfect. There are tons of trails and hiking in the area including walking away from the house. The owners were very nice and very accommodating.

I visited the Flying Squirrel with my two dogs. The house was very cozy, comfortable, and outfitted nicely. You can walk out your front door, down the hill and find wonderful hiking trails in the neighborhood. I spent most of my time hiking in DuPont Forest with the dogs. Trail heads to many popular waterfall hikes are less than a 10 minutes drive from the cabin. A quick stop at the Whistle Stop Cafe, less than 5 minutes from the cabin, had me loaded up with staples, including wonderful homemade chicken pot pies, local chevre, organic veggies, and local apples. Brevard, the closest town, about a 15 minutes drive, boasts great shopping opportunities and restaurants; ranging from sandwich shops to fine dining. You will pass two wonderful pottery studios, Mud Dabbers and Mountain Forrest Pottery, on your way into town. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at The Flying Squirrel and hope to return soon!

Great location, close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Dupont Forest, and a short drive into town. The roads within a few miles around the property remind me of Vermont with the gently rolling farms, a great road-biking area for the casual biker. We visited the area for the cooler weather and hiking, the Blue Ridge Parkway provided relief from the weather, great hiking, and plenty of cool streams for the dogs. The cottage was a bit dated, unpretentious and immaculate. It had plenty of room and "just in case" medicines and band aids. The immediate area was a tranquil setting in the woods with a beautiful back porch. Zero issues with the transaction, directions, or anything. We'll certainly put this high on our list when we return. You won't find a better value anywhere, we rented 20+ cabins and cottages in North GA and here in the Brevard area.

Sherwood Forest was beautiful. We loved Flying Squirrel Cottage. It was very roomy and had everything we needed and then some. Sally gave us a fantastic deal on it since they were dredging Trout Lake which we barely even noticed the noise...and only when we were outside. This vacation was very relaxing and our little dog seemed to enjoy it too, especially going to the waterfalls. They were truly breathtaking. We did a little fishing in the other lakes in Sherwood Forest but didn't have much luck there. The area of Brevard, Dupont State Forest, Pisgah National Forest, and Hendersonville were all beautiful and clean areas. Cascade Lake is also pretty but no luck fishing there either. The shops in Brevard and Hendersonville were very quaint and the shop-owners were very dog-friendly and welcomed our pooch in every shop we went in (we asked first and she was leashed). We would definitely return again for a visit. We loved the Whistlestop Market down the road. Also, check out the little Mexican place called the 3 Caballeros...it had good food. I didn't care for the salsa but everything else was good. Be sure to get groceries in Brevard at Ingles Market. Wow...nice grocery store....great selection, great prices, and amazing salad/fruit/pasta/olive bar. I wish we had one where we live. Overall I think anyone visiting the Sherwood Forest area will love it as it is central to almost everything. You will love the serenity at Flying Squrrel Lodge too.

A very well maintained property with a relaxing comfort of going home to grandma's cottage in the midst of a serene setting bound to soothe the soul and rejuvenate the spirit. The a Sherwood Forest development property is a wonderful Audubon Sanctuary and while there is much activity going on in a capital improvement project in the area it will not detract from your enjoyment and only reassure your confidence in the fact that this community is reinvesting and revitalizing itself for future generations to come. We enjoyed our stay immensely and will be back again and again, I am sure.

The cabin is beautiful, and the view is wonderful. The description that I failed to pay attention to was: "Pet Friendly." Since we do not have pets, I didn't even notice this in the list of amenities. From the moment we walked in the door, 2 of us were sneezing our heads off...with itchy eyes, and stuffy noses. We soon noticed pet hairs everywhere....on the couch, on the sheets, on the towels...everywhere!!. It was too late to find a drug store, but the first thing next morning, we raced to Brevard to get some Clariten. We just slept in our clothes, so as not to be surrounded with hairs. It seems a good vacuuming and washing of sheets and towels might take of this for others, but perhaps the pet hairs are just too ingrained in the surroundings. Again, very nice place otherwise.

                Recommended for: Pet owners.

Owner response: I try so hard to make sure that everyone knows this house is pet friendly; it is clearly stated in the information that is available on VRBO. The cottage is professionally cleaned each and every time that renters leave, regardless of how long they stay. However, various furred friends have enjoyed the house and forest with us over the 27 years that we have owned the home and most of my renters bring their four footed friends with them when they come. Please, please, please read all the information that is given so that you can make an informed decision about where to spend your time. And please, if you have an allergy of ANY kind, mention it in your request for information so that I can be upfront about any possible issues that may affect you during your stay. I want all of my renters to have a peaceful and enjoyable time during their stay.

My husband and I came in for a long weekend. The fireplace was great and stayed going most of the trip. We sat on the porch and enjoyed the quiet. You could see part of a couple houses but not close enough to not be private. We had lunch at Rocky's and enjoyed shopping in the area stores. We are coming back for a stay with the family (Sorry, had to get a larger cabin!) in a month. We had a great time. The quilt in the master bedroom brought tears to my eyes as I thought of the memories it included. It was clear this was a much loved home. We were lucky to share!

              Year Purchased: 1985

About the owner: My husband and I work at Murray State University as a Director and Coordinator, respectively. We spend our free time traveling with our dog Brutus and our rabbit Phineas to visit our children and assist with home improvement.

              Why the Owner Chose Brevard:
I have been coming to the Sherwood Forest since 1965. It started with family vacations every year in rental homes until finally in 1985, my parents purchased Flying Squirrel Lodge. It was designed to be easily accessible which allowed Mom and Dad to enjoy it for many years before turning it over to me in 2011. Sherwood Forest is home to so many knowledgeable people who work together to create and maintain a community where people live and protect the natural environment. There is so much to see and do yet it is a place of peace and tranquility. It is truly a slice of heaven on earth.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Flying Squirrel sits overlooking Trout Lake, one of 5 lakes in the Colony. A trail begins just behind the house and can be followed up or down the mountain, across streams, around lakes and through the forest to connect with 21 miles of marked paths.
