LA BALEINE (pronounced la-ba-len)
(French for 'The Whale').
Residents of Langley watched with admiration as this spacious landmark home was being built in 2002. Its large lawn slopes down to overlook the waters of the Saratoga Passage from a high bank location. Great Blue Herons rest and roost high in the stand of tall Douglas fir trees on the west, and neighbors on the east are shielded from sight by a bucolic hazelnut grove. Deer frequently meander on the grounds and eagles soar by to check out the waters below the bluff.
Several pods of Orcas live in the Langley area year-round; and when the gray whales come through they gouge divots in the shrimp flats which surround Whidbey Island. There is a chance of hearing them and even looking down to see one browsing below the bank.
The interior was designed with a traditional touch, yet a warm, open ambiance which is clean and non-fussy, with very stable in-floor heat. Fireplaces grace the cozy living area, kitchen and the spacious master bedroom as well as the Great Room. Wood clad cathedral ceilings and pole beams create space overhead. The gourmet kitchen provides lots of elbow room around the center island for friends and family to supervise the chef. The spacious master bedroom suite with spare bedroom enjoys upstairs privacy while the Queen bedroom is on the main floor beside the bathroom. The king and queen beds offer memory foan comfort.. Each room, and even the jetted tub in the master bath, provides terrific views of water, mountains and greenery, and there are decks everywhere you'd like to have one.

I had the great good fortune to stay 3 nights at La Baleine in the summer of 2011. I particularly enjoyed the quiet at night – soothing sounds from the bay were a perfect sleeping potion. During the day, the views from the various decks and porches are spectacular, and birds, deer and other forest critters frequently visit the property. The large common rooms are cozy and comfortable, as well. The residence is only steps away from downtown Langley and its amenities. La Baleine is easy to find, easy to feel at home in, and difficult to leave behind.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, age 55+.

About the owner: We searched almost the entire USA for a location to cherish, and finally chose Langley, an old-fashioned neighborly town of friendly people. I chatted with a visiting veterinarian as we crossed paths on the street one day , and when she learned that we own a home in Langley she blurted out 'OMG, you mean you get to enjoy all this beauty every day!?!'' Well, in fact, we hope some day to find a way to live here ourselves, but meanwhile we want to offer the experience of La Baleine to other dreamers and travelers. Dan & Marie-Laure Bessesen
