Chautauqua Institution cottage description
This is the beautiful, spacious entire third floor of a large Victorian cottage; we have successfully rented it through this site for weeks 1-6 of the Chautauqua 2012 Season. If you are interested in a rental for week(s) 7, 8 and/or 9, we would love to hear from you, and please read on.
You will enjoy relaxing in the living room that entirely fills the octagon shaped tower, plus has a cathedral ceiling and numerous windows from which you see tree tops and the lake. The kitchen has a dining room table in its center that seats six, and comes fully equipped with dishware, silverware, a microwave, a toaster oven, and refrigerator. There are two bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed, and one with twin beds, and linens are provided. There is a full bathroom, with tub and shower, as well as closets in all the bedrooms and the central hallway that provide a lot of room to store clothes, sports equipment, musical instruments and other items.
The cottage has a side yard which you can use for sunning, relaxing, bar-b-q-ing and yard games like croquet, badminton, or tossing a ball around. There are a full-sized washer and dryer on the ground floor utility porch available for your use.
The cottage has a great central location. It is one block to the Chautauqua Cinema, and one block to Norton Hall (opera), the Bratton Theater (plays), the lake front (swimming, boating), the nursery school (great playgrounds for young kids) and the Arts Quadrangle (arts classes of all kinds), and just four blocks to Bestor Plaza (the town square, with Library, Bookstore, restaurants) and five blocks to the Amphitheater (symphony concerts, the 10:45 daily lecture, etc.). The cottage also sits just 10 yards below the tram route that runs down Pratt Avenue.
The third floor for rent and the cottage thus offer a superb place for several friends or a family to enjoy all or a part of the Chautauqua nine-week season. If you are not familiar with all of the entertainment, recreational activities, religious programming and lectures available during Chautauqua's nine-week season, please peruse the Chautauqua Institution web site. We have successfully rented the cottage for weeks 1-6 of the 2012 Season. We would like to rent it for weeks 7, 8 and/or 9, at $1,500 per week, or $3,750 total if you take it for all 3 weeks.

Year Purchased: 1946
About the owner: My great grandfather purchased this Victorian house in 1946, after World War II had ended and it was clear that my father and great uncles had survived it, and the family would need a larger cottage at Chautauqua. My family has lived in the cottage every summer since 1946, usually using the downstairs two floors and renting the third floor. The cottage has been beautifully maintained and updated. I am 51, and spent part of every summer of my life at Chautauqua, and love it. I sail, swim and water ski on the Lake, go to the symphony concerts and other entertainment, go to the large non-denominational worship service on Sunday mornings in the Amphitheater, and see movies at the Cinema that is just a stone's throw away from the cottage. Since I grew up spending summers at Chautauqua, I went to the Chautauqua Boys and Girls Club, which still operates today. I received red cross swimming instruction there, as well as how to play soft ball, tennis, volley ball and basketball, and received instruction in archery, on the trampoline and in arts and crafts, along with how to use canoes, row boats, and war canoes. As a young teen, I took art courses, then worked on the grounds in the Library, while also sailing C-Scows in the regattas that occurred, and still do, every Saturday and Sunday.
Why the Owner Chose Chautauqua Institution:
My great grandfather first started coming to Chautauqua in around 1906. His daughter, my grandmother, as well as my father and me have spent a portion of every summer of our lives at Chautauqua, and our cottage, as described above, is centrally located for a host of the smorgass board of activities available at Chautauqua.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The third floor that is for rent, and the cottage it is in, have a lot of unique benefits. I love being able to finish dinner and be seated in the movie theater four minutes later. I love being able to come back to the cottage during intermission in the operas at Norton Hall and the plays at the Bratton Theater. I love being able to take my young nieces, nephews and cousins to the nursery school playground that is just one block away to play in its awesome multiple playgrounds, as well as sauntering around the Arts Quadrangle and looking at what the art students are creating. The house is also just an easy four block walk to Bestor Plaza, where I sit at the refectory reading and eating, or browse through the Bookstore. The cottage is also just one block to the Lake front, and three blocks to the public beach called University Beach, where I did a lot of sunning and swimming growing up.
