Location: Amboise, Centre-Loire Valley, France, Europe (Amboise Center, 30 minutes from Tours)

Accommodations:  Townhome, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 6)

Keywords:  Townhouse

This 16th century jewel, a gift from King Francois the 1st to his tailor (Le Drapier), offers breathtaking views of the Royal Chateau d’Amboise, The Castle Square, the medieval town’s charming main street, Rue Nationale with it's Clock Tower and a glimpse of the Loire River from your balcony. Located directly across from the entrance to the Chateau, the majestic and much photographed townhouse, having had the King's direct permission for a 2nd floor balcony, has been lovingly restored leaving all of its ancient charm intact but upgraded with modern conveniences such as dishwasher, washer/dryer and high speed Internet connection. Amboise, one of the most visited cities in France, is the perfect starting point for an enchanting discovery tour of France’s glorious historical past. The Loire flows majestically through this castle-studded valley, recently listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Your townhouse is a pleasant walk or a short taxi ride across the Amboise Bridge, spanning the Loire River, from the train station. After climbing the ancient spiral, stone staircase to the third floor, you are welcomed into the light and cheery kitchen with it’s hanging copper pots. The large living room has a fireplace and French doors opening onto the balcony as well as two windows, which look out to the main street of the medieval town of Amboise and its royal castle. The dining table offers the same view as the balcony. Through the arched alcove is a convertible sofa bed and the TV. The hallway leads to the middle bedroom with a single daybed plus another convertible double sized sofa bed and antique armoire for your belongings, then through to the back bedroom with a French queen bed complete with antique canopy. Both rooms have fireplaces and french doors that lead out to another balcony. We have scoured the antique markets of the area to comfortably furnish the townhouse with style.

Explore the fortressed walls of Amboise, the Royal Chateau and the magnificent home where Leonardo da Vinci spent the last years of his life. Clos Luce, now a museum and a tribute to his genius, is within walking distance of the apartment. When you’re ready to venture a little further out, just 20 minutes away by car or a delightful bike ride is Chenonceau, the darling of the Loire Valley Chateaux. Nearby Chambord with its many turrets or Vilandry, with its amazingly beautiful ornamental gardens of colorful vegetables should be next on your agenda as they shouldn't be missed.

When you’ve had your fill of sumptuous royal castles, you might explore one of the many spring and summer "Vide Greniers,"(empty the attic) town-wide flea markets or some of the many antique stores to find that perfect treasure.

Visit the local "caves" and sample the sparkling white wines of Vouvray and Montlouis, the full-bodied reds of Chinon and Bourgueil, specific to this region, or savor your afternoon pastry and chocolate at Madame Bigot's Tea Salon, an Amboise tradition for more than 150 years, which is right outside your door.

If you’re the outdoor type, one of the longest and most picturesque bike trails in Europe as well as section of the Grande Randonnee (France’s answer to the John Muir Trail) pass through Amboise, for your cycling and hiking enjoyment. Quality cruising bicycles can be rented from several locations 3 minutes on foot from the townhouse.

To wrap up your day, you can dine in any of the wonderful restaurants, in all price ranges, right outside your door or enjoy a home-cooked meal with fresh produce, cheese and sausages for which the area is famous, from the twice-weekly farmer’s market, one of the most popular open-air markets in the area. Don’t forget a crusty fresh-baked baguette from one of the local boulangeries! With a bottle of wine from one of the local wineries, sit back, relax and enjoy the view, which might even include the summer fireworks show at the Castle across the street. Looking for more space, three floors, two bathrooms, courtyard and garden in Old Amboise? Please ask us about Le Cardinal our other Amboise Townhouse. Stopping in Paris? Ask us about renting one of our 1 bedroom apartments in either the Latin Quarter, Chic 16th near the Eiffel Tower or with views of the Seine in the Historic Croissy-sur-Seine at the entrance to Paris.
