Hawaii, old style----- Molokai buildings can rise to 35', height of a palm tree. Paradise found, A-207 Wavecrest, a 600 s.f. plus balcony condo, rises 10' above the red earth and is set back 40' from where the mighty Pacific Ocean rests upon a reef. Waves crash 1/4 mile out at the reef edge and lap their way to shore, stayed by the rocks and black sand just 1' below land.
From our balcony, no buildings in sight, the waves release the jumping fish to view, the trade winds bend the palm fronds, the clouds build and dissipate, the rainbows form and slide, the birds sing their age-old songs. We face S.E. Watch the early light appear behind the mountains, send rays to waken Maui, then Lanai, then Sun smiles onto the shore ahead.
Now, a few Hawiians walk the shallow reef areas gathering into their mesh bags, edible seaweed. From the adjacent land, fishermen pull their small flat-bottom boats onto the reef to search their day's catch. Sometimes spear or net brings octopus. No license is needed for a rod and line from shore which could supply your breakfast.
The East side of Molokai is lush and green, as the tradewinds catch on 4500' mountain and send occsional short rains. The West side is primarily flat and dry and ends at a long lovely beach. Be aware of rip tides and cross-currents there. Of the East roadside beaches, our favorites are near mile marker 16 and marker 20. These are good for loafing.
Take along our beach chairs, mat, and beach towels; also good for swimming as they are protected by the reef and are South facing to cut the wind and wave action. 16 mile beach is also where the outrigger group stores its' boats. Stop at the Neighborhood Store, mile marker 16 for picnic supplies.
Arrival by air, a 20 minute trip from Maui or Honolulu. Hawaiian, Island Air, Aloha, George's Aviation, Molokai Air Shuttle, Paragon. Hoopolua Airport---At this small airport are Dollar Rent a Car and Budget. When reserving, ask for open hours.
We find a small car or 4 wheel drive for adventures or a pick-up truck for surfing are a good idea. Air condition. Ask for a driving map. To go to Paradise Found A-207 Wavecrest at mile marker 13 East--- On Molokai there is one main road, Kamehameha V Hwy. Go to it, then East, Left, a few miles, note a gas station, then on to the main town, Kaunakakai, (kow-nuh-kuh-ky').
At the only other gas station, Chevron, jog left into town, then right. The bakery is on the left side, the Foodland store on the right. Pick up a free copy of the island newspaper for events. A good time now for food shopping and snapshots. For batteries, etc, Misaki's store is next to foodland and Take's Hardware is next, (no name on the sign).
If it is Saturday morning, across from the Chevron station will be farmers' market with nice produce picked before 5 AM same day from backyards. Then turn right to main Hwy. then East, Left to mile marker 13. Allow about 1/2 hour to Wavecrest Resort. It is a lovely drive.
Arrival by boat from Lahaina, Maui-- call rental car ahead, let them know your arrival time and destination. From the wharf, a short drive to the Chevron station. Continue straight, then R turn onto main street Of Kaunakakai--
AS you enter Wavecrest Resort, on your left is a manager's office. If it is open, please stop in, let them know who you are and where you will stay. Then drive ahead. There are 3 buildings, C, then B, then A. Park about midway behind A. Take one flight os stairs to A-207.
We use a keypad entry. When you reserve will send you the code. You won't need to have keys to enter. You will need a key, however for the pool, open 9AM-9PM and the same key for the coin laundry about 20' away. The washer $1.50 and dryer $1.25 uses quarters. They can be bought from the manager. This key is large, on a wooden key chain, and is located in the kitchen key box. Now , welcome and have a good time. Your hosts Marilyn and Russ AT YOUR SERVICE |
