One block from the University of California, Berkeley, North Berkeley, also called the Gourmet Ghetto, is centered along Shattuck north of University. It is considered the birthplace of innovative California cuisine. This movement was led by Alice Waters of Chez Panisse, a restaurant that continues to thrive to this day.
And if that isn’t enough there is a weekly farmer’s market and annual North Berkeley Spice of Life Festival.
Of course, there’s no shortage of shopping in the neighborhood, with Walgreens Pharmacy, North Berkeley Wine, Vintage Berkeley (in the historic Vine Street pumping plant), , and plenty of groceries (Andronico’s and Safeway are both in the neighborhood). Stop for a coffee at the very first location of Peet’s.
Several culinary destinations have risen up around Waters’ famous restaurant, including César, the Cheese Board Collective and Cheese Board Pizza, Cioccolata Di Vino, the Juice Bar Collective and Cha Am. New, savory experiences include take out from Gregoire and Poulet, Brazillian food at Café de la Paz, a good old Jewish deli at Saul’s, cooking classes at Kitchen on Fire, delicious pastries at Masse's, cupcakes at Love At First Bite, vegan sushi at Cha Ya and Berkeley’s version of a food court, Epicurious Garden.
Why the Owner Chose Berkeley: Location, location, location!. Arguably one of the best places to live--anywhere. This neighborhood of tree-lined streets north of the UC Berkeley campus is defined by Shattuck Avenue and its wealth of great restaurants. The world-renowned Chez Panisse restaurant anchors the neighborhood, as does the wildly popular Cheese Board Pizza and the original Peet's Coffee. Just above Shattuck, in the lower Berkeley hills, it is possible to live in a home (that is visited by deer) with sweeping views of San Francisco, the San Francisco Bay, and the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges and still be able to walk to shops, restaurants, schools, and bus stops. Downtown Berkeley, with its art, film, theater, and music district is 15 minutes or less south of the Gourmet Ghetto by foot. Dinner at Chez Panisse, a concert at Freight & Salvage, and a short walk back home--life doesn’t get much better than this!
