Vinalhaven cottage description
This cottage is only 2.5 miles from town and looks across the road toward the tidal Arey Cove. There is nearby access to the shore via a short path on a Town Landing. It is within walking distance of the town beach and swimming in Booth’s Quarry. The cottage has a small but complete kitchen including dish washer, microwave, and gas stove. There is a Monitor heater to warm up the insulated cottage if the nights are cool. Local phone is provided with a DSL Wi-Fi capability. The TV antenna receives several channels from Bangor, although reception can be poor on wet days. There is a DVD player.
Although the floor area measures less than 1000 sq ft., the cottage has a very efficient open plan. The half bath on the first floor includes a washer and dryer. There is a very pleasant outdoor shower on the rear of the cottage and a south-facing deck for sunning yourself in the afternoon. A daybed in the corner of the living room is great for napping or comfortable relaxing with a book. The second floor has another bathroom with a small shower and two private bedrooms. The master bed room, looking out over the cove, has a queen-sized bed. The other bedroom has a double bed, two twin mattresses and, if needed, one or two Pack-N-Play cribs There is a 14’ x 14’ shed to permit storing bicycles, life jackets, or anything else that you do not wish to bring into the house. Parking is off the street. Linens are provided. The setup is ideal for a small family. Pictures of the interior are included, although the exact furniture may change depending on the guest's needs.
Most cottages on the island rent from Saturday to Saturday; however, we are going to use a Sunday to Sunday schedule to lessen the congestion on the ferry. This will also allow the visitor to attend the Saturday functions on the island (including the Flea Market) and access the city transfer station before leaving. The nominal charges are per week, plus the Maine occupancy tax. Most pets can be considered, with any additional fee negotiated when making the reservation. We do not rent to smokers. A non-refundable deposit of 10% will hold a reservation until 15 March. After 15 March a 50 % non-refundable deposit is due within 2 weeks of making the reservation along with a signed rental agreement. The balance is due upon arrival along with a refundable damage/cleaning deposit. If the visitor does not have the time or inclination to clean the cottage before leaving, arrangements can be made with owner upon arrival. The owners spend their summers in a nearby residence and are available for problems that might arise.

My dream cottage on my dream island: Vinalhaven
My dream cottage on my dream island: Vinalhaven
Two weeks in July 2013 were perfect with a variety of weather experiences, lovely fog, sweet rainfall, bright sunshine and quiet nights. The owners are gracious and helpful at each time we spoke and my only regret is we didn't stay longer. Our dog adapted immediately to the pace of life in the cottage and being out on an anchored tie-down. Well, he's a smart dog! Comfortable bed, sweet shower stall upstairs and great dual purpose toilets. What a pleasure to kick back and not hear news or watch TV. That's the way we like it. We appreciated the WiFi connection. Long drive from Maryland but this was our 4th trip to Vinalhaven as a couple, the latest one for me since 1976. Would love to stay longer next time. Bring the bug spray 'cause Maine is mosquito central but beats Maryland by a mile for weather in July. We loved the Sat. Flea Market, ARC Cafe, Union Church bean and brown bread supper, Lane's I.--a little bit of paradise. Made use of the Island Medical Center and met a lovely person there who I miss very much. She led me to meeting a senior resident at The Homestead who I'll hope is a Friend for many years to come. Be prepared to do the Vinalhaven 'wave' at every car you see. If you don't, they'll know you're a newbie to the island. The smell of the sea, fir trees and the soft sound of watermen leaving in their diesel powered boats in the morning. Vinalhaven has it all and so does this cottage.

Owner response: We are always pleased when our clients enjoy their visit. It is gratifying to meet more people who appreciate Vinalhaven as much as we do.
great location, cosy place
great location, cosy place
We spent a great week at the house. It is a cosy cottage that is in a great location on the island ( near town, near a great quarry for swimming, and a reasonable walk down to the always empty State Beach for dog walks or bird walks....The owners live across the road and are infinitely helpful but at the same time repectful of a renter's privacy- The only negative was one we knew before going which is the house is near the road- We just brought leads for our dogs when we were outside with them so we didn't have to worry.
