Great Barrington house description
Located between the villages of Stockbridge, Housatonic and Great Barrington. Most unique Riverhouse property located on the bank of Rising Pond of the Housatonic River.
Built around 1860, the Riverhouse has been updated and outfitted for modern-day convenience but retains its charm and unique appeal. From original painted-board floors and claw-foot bathtub with shower to modern amenities this cottage offers spectacular views of foliage and wildlife from the deck, picture window and bathroom of this upstairs artist’s aerie, filled with original art by local artists.
The only house located directly on the banks of Rising Pond, it offers spectacular views of fall foliage and wildlife and makes for an authentic Berkshires experience. Easy access from the bank of the property for small boating and sculling. Located in the heart of the Berkshires; the Appalachian Trail, Tanglewood, Shakespeare and Co., the Rockwell Museum, Chesterfield, summer stock theater, music, and dance are all just minutes away. Fully equipped kitchen with all cooking utensils and serving dishes make eating on the deck and entertaining a delight. Walking distance (1/4 mile) to the fabulous Berkshire Mountain Bakery with delicious french pastries and bread for your morning coffee and take away pizzas for easy meals. Taft Organic Farms is 1.25 miles down the road.
The open floor plan and lovely views make this efficient upstairs apartment seem much larger than it’s 700 square feet. The two private bedrooms include brand new (May 2012) twin beds that can be made into a king in the first and a new (May 2012) queen-size bed in the second. The large bathroom features an antique full-size claw foot bathtub (with shower) that gives out to a incredible view as you soak! Full laundry facilities available. Parking for two cars.
Smithsonian Magazine has voted Great Barrington one of America's 20 Best Small Towns! Find out for yourself...a hidden gem.
Beautiful, brand new sister property (VRBO #484655) just 300 yards down the road will accomodate 4 more if you are travelling with a larger group.

Holiday season in the Berkshires
I LOVE the place. I have been working the last 2 days so I haven't been able to enjoy it thoroughly. Right now my daughter and I are having a glass of wine and enjoying the moon shining on the water. This place has everything.......right down to an iron! The beds are so comfy and the linens are divine. I am so excited to spend the holidays here. This is exactly what I needed. Your mother-in-law is charming. She is quite taken with you! I agree with her. You have excellent taste. I will keep you posted and send pictures of our holidays at the Riverhouse!

A Perfect Vacation
A Perfect Vacation
My wife and I enjoyed nine wonderful nights at the Riverhouse during early October. We had been coming to the Berkshires for 30 years, but had never enjoyed it in this way - having a cozy and well-equipped apartment at our disposal - or this much. The listing accurately describes the apartment. It had everything we needed to prepare meals (when we were not sampling the restaurant life) or to relax. We would awake to the ever-changing, sweeping view of the Housatonic River, which we enjoyed from the picture window and from the deck. The water reflected the trees and the sky, and at night, the stars and setting sun. We looked forward to returning "home" after our daily excursions around the Berkshires, which offers far more than one can take advantage of in a week. Between cultural events, many hiking opportunities, interesting shops and galleries, and fall festivals, there was so much to do and see. We especially liked our tour of the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst and Olana, the residence of the Hudson River School painter, Frederic Church, near Hudson, NY, as well as the rail trail near Adams. We are already planning our return next year.

Riverhouse = Spendid!
Bee, I've been wanting to write to say how wonderful it is to stay at the Riverhouse. I have spent the last half hour watching a blue heron and seeing the morning mist burn off the river. The apartment is so comfortable and thoughtfully set up. We love to cook, and this is among the nicest rental kitchens we've ever been in == lots of pots, pans, utensils, and serving ware, including several cutting boards, which are not always so well supplied. We love all the nice touches, such as leaving us tablecloths and extra towels. Just wanted to say thank you and let you know we are having a heavenly time.

Relaxing on the River!
Relaxing on the River!
My hsuband and I really enjoyed our stay at the Riverhouse. Every morning we had coffee on the deck overlooking the beautiful Houstaonic River. The location is great for Tanglewood, Shakespeare and all the wonderful things we love about the Berkshires. We will defitinitely be visiting the Riverhouse again.

This was my first visit to this area and I was blown away by the view from the Riverhouse! I loved to sit on the deck in the evening and watch the sunset and the Canadian Geese come in to land for the night. The footed bathtub was perfect to soak in a luxurious bubble bath and gaze out to the river. I slept really well in the comfortable large bed with a big soft comforter to snuggle under. The weather was cool in June and a welcome treat coming from Texas! The kitchen was fully equipped to cook whatever you desired but with so many wonderful places to eat nearby it was hard to decide if we wanted to cook. Taft Market right down the road did have wonderful fresh produce and cheese though. The croissants at the Berkshire Mountain Bakery were to die for, and after trying them all, the almond was my favorite. I was told the take home pizzas are amazing as well. We explored the quaint towns nearby and Chesterwood was a delightful place to spend the afternoon. We had the most fantastic meal at the Old Inn on the Green where we dined by candlelight. I am already trying to figure out when I can return to check out all the places I missed. I highly recommend the Riverhouse.

The River House was the perfect girls getaway! The apartment was so clean and all of us LOVED the quaint charm and style of the place! We were a group of 4 teachers who were so happy to relax on the deck and enjoy the beautiful river view. There was loads of shopping and wonderful places to eat and grab a quick snack and a delicious breakfast. Mostly though we loved the deck...where we enjoyed wine, cocktails and a beautiful view! Thank you again for such a fabulous time!

Cosy even in frigid temperatures!
Cosy even in frigid temperatures!
We had a very cosy stay at the Riverhouse during a week where temperatures were close to zero. Despite it being an old house and right on the water, we were snug the whole while. The beds were very comfortable and we slept very well. And the full moon shining on the river ice was wonderful. The owner was very responsive and the communication prompt and helpful. The location is near to Great Barrington, Stockbridge, and Lenox so you can see all the sights in the area within a few minutes. Would stay again!

Week in the Berkshires
I meant to write to you right after we left Saturday morning, but we went to my sister's in VT for a few days and just got back home. Everything was great. We loved the place and hope to be able to go back for a longer stay next summer. The grill worked fine. We left some charcoal and lighter for the next guests. thanks for everything,

Texas visitors wanting to beat the heat!
Texas visitors wanting to beat the heat!
This is a great little house with a gorgeous setting - the deck overlooking the river beckons one to sit and contemplate, read, dine, chat, drink wine , bird watch ( we saw a resident eagle every day!). The inside is small but complete - two bedrooms with good beds and nice linens, good size bathroom, small kitchen and nice seating area with a great view of the river. The Berkshires area is loaded with things to do - we were there a week and didn't get to do everything we wanted. Tanglewood music fesitval was going on all week, the Rockwell museum, the Chesterwood museum (Daniel Chester French sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial), hikes up Monument Mountain and the Appalachian Trail - and so much more -took a bike ride between the small , quaint New England towns, great weather! It rained a little bit almost every day, but at a time when you welcomed it - sort of created a built in down time to relax. There were some really nice restaurants we tried, including a great bakery a short walk from the house -Berkshire Mountain Bakery - the best fresh croissants and homemade pizza to go... we went almost every morning. The accommodations were lovely and there is a lot to do in the area. Recommend highly.
