Since its spring 2008 inauguration, Il Sogno has been readily called 'home' by many guests. It is a comfortable yet elegant place to unwind in the silence and fresh air of the countryside. It is the ideal vantage point from which to visit the city centre or the gorgeous lakes Martignano, Bracciano and Vico and to take a day trip to the neighbouring regions of Umbria and Tuscany.
Have a swim and then take in the splendour of the setting sun after a busy day of sightseeing, either in the capital, or in the many parks, churches and archaeological sites. Or cook a meal and eat al fresco, after a day of sailing, kayaking and swimming at one of the nearby lakes.
Il Sogno is a private villa that has three houses, one for the owner and two guest houses, as well as several outbuildings. There is an expansive front lawn with swimming pool, grassy meadows, flower and vegetable gardens and numerous fruit trees.
Il Sogno: Il Sogno is perfectly positioned so you can make the most of your vacation with the least travel time to Rome's historical centre (30 minutes by train, the stop is five minutes away), the volcanic lakes, ruins such as Ostia Antica, Hadrian's Villa, Villa D'Este, Roman catacombs and Etruscan necropolis, quaint medieval towns and ancient settlements.
Our manicured property with its two-acre lawn and three acres of fields is great for games: croquet, badminton, volleyball and bocce, ping pong, etc. Or take a nature walk on our land and explore the hundreds of varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers, as well as the great variety of birds. We also have three adult (small to large) bicycles for our guests to use for bike rides in the area.
The Brook Cottage opens in March, as Rome rolls into its glorious Spring and you are surrounded by gorgeous green hills and fields. Take in the warm, fresh air, local festivals, wineries, your first al-fresco meal of the year. The historic center is great for sightseeing in the Spring before the summer crowds begin.
Summer is Il Sogno's busiest time as guests are attracted to our lovely, family-friendly pool, tons of private lounging (and playing!) space, our close proximity to the crystal-clear waters of Lake Bracciano and Lake Martignano, and our convenient location to golf, numerous shops and restaurants and the air-conditioned train that brings you to the center of the city in 35 minutes for 1.50 euros, which is the cost of transportation tickets in Rome proper.
Fall is often warm enough for a lake plunge and if you join us in October, you may choose to help us pick our olives, see how olive oil is made, and, of course, take some home! Fall is also a wonderful time to visit the sites as there are less crowds.
Winter is filled with festivities. Rome and the surrounding towns are busy celebrating Christmas, Hannukah, Epiphany, Carnival and the winter sales. It's great to come home and build a fire after a long day of sightseeing, reveling and shopping! The Brook Cottage is closed in winter, but our Studio Guest House is open.
The stream that borders our back yard is home to Etruscan grottos; we also have a small one within our property, next to the stairs that lead to the second guest house, The Brook Cottage.
We now offer poolside wi-fi internet access! Bring your laptops!
The Lazio Region: Lazio is a region rich with cultural activities, ancient history, gorgeous nature and wonderful food. Il Sogno is a five-minute drive from the old “borgo” of Cesano, a medieval town, originally settled by the Etruscan. There are other medieval towns with castles, such as Bracciano and Isola Farnese, within a short drive as well as the beautiful “borgos” of Campagnano, Anguillara, Calcata and the city of Viterbo, located within its ancient walls.
The area is full of Etruscan ruins (Cerveteri, Veio), and boasts hot springs such as Stimigliano and Le Terre dei Papi, all within a 10-30 minute drive. The world-renowned Olgiata golf course is 4 km away, the Parco di Roma Golf Club is 25 minutes drive, and both the Parco dei Medici Golf Club in Rome and the Golf Club le Querce in Sutri are 35 minutes away. We are also just 30 minutes away from Rome's most famous beach.
Rome's Lake District: Rome's Lake District is surrounded by unspoiled park land where golf, fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, nature walks and birding are year-round activities. In the crystal-clear waters of Bracciano and Martignano, only electric motors are allowed, and both places abound with sail boats, kayaks, peddle boats for rent. Il Sogno's own kayak is on a beach at Lake Bracciano for guest use.
The other volcanic lakes, Vico and Bolsena, are worth a visit as well, and make a nice day trip, especially if you stop along the way at the small town festivals, antique shops and Etruscan ruins. Il Sogno is in the heart of Etruria and borders on Veio Park, the Sorbo Valley and Martignano-Bracciano Park.
We are happy to share our favourite hikes, hidden roads to Etruscan and Roman ruins and programs for what we think is an ideal day in an idyllic setting. We can even provide you with a picnic lunch with fruit and vegetables from our garden, cheese from the nearby farm and local wines.
The Studio is a private guest house that formerly served as an artist’s studio to the previous owner and architect of Il Sogno. It is located near the pool and the main house. The Studio is a stucco building with a terracotta-tiled roof, high chestnut ceilings and large, custom-made, wrought-iron double doors and windows. In addition to the sleeping areas, it boasts a spacious living room with working fireplace and comfortable seating, a dining area and fully-functional kitchen with a beautiful marble sink from Carrara. Antiques and custom upholstery tastefully enhance the light, airy rooms. The terrace looks over the valley and the hills, has marble bistro tables, a large Carrara marble dining table, wrought-iron chairs, a barbecue, an outdoor sink of hand-carved travertine and a tree-house in a neighbouring century-old olive tree.
