Wonderful Family Reunion

We had a wonderful family reunion at "The Retreat" in Massanutten. The house was spacious enough for all 17 people and we had plenty of room to gather for socializing and dining in. We found much in the area to keep us busy during the weekend. Some went to the waterpark, some to the family adventure area, and some just relaxed. We had a great time. We thank you and look forward to revisiting Massanutten.

We had a wonderful family reunion at "The Retreat" in Massanutten. The house was spacious enough for all 17 people and we had plenty of room to gather for socializing and dining in. We found much in the area to keep us busy during the weekend. Some went to the waterpark, some to the family adventure park, and some just relaxed. We had a great time. The house was clean but needs to be updated and many repairs are needed, as well. The screen on the back porch was badly torn and not fastened in many places. The kitchen cabinet doors were askew and need to be updated and/or rehung. The living area and dining area have insufficient lighting. It would be preferable to have an icemaker in the kitchen refrigerator. Mattresses need to be replaced. A larger garbage can was needed and there was no recycling container. On the positive side, the location was good and the fooseball table provided much enjoyment for our grandchildren.

Owner response: I was glad to hear that this guest found our home was clean, as we place a high premium on making sure that our home is clean and fresh for each new guest. We also agree that the location is ideally situated at the top of the mountain and the foosball table and other games are great to occupy the kids. I followed up with him on his other comments. This guest was absolutely correct that the back screen had torn and we have replaced the entire screen for the back porch. It is a great feature to the home and adds a lot of usable space to an already large home and we have ensured that all guests can use that without any difficultly. As to the other comments and the overall rating, the guest recognized that he is used to staying in multi-million dollar beach homes on the Outer Banks and perhaps has reviewed the home against those admittedly tough standards. We provide a great mountain home at Massanutten, but by no means do we hold ourselves out to be in the multi-million dollar home rental category, as those homes rent for significantly more money and simply do not exist at Massanutten. The mattresses are all new and quite comfortable, although in response to this guest's comments, we have ordered an additional mattress pad for the master king suite, as that was really the only bed he had an issue with. Massanutten does not recycle, which explains the lack of recycling container.

Disappointing rental

My family rented this property for a reunion over the Memorial Day weekend. I had been told by the property manager that I would find a few stains on the carpets for which we would not be charged. What we found, however, was that all carpets upstairs and down were filthy. The whole house looked nasty and poorly maintained. When we got there, there were not enough towels provided for 15 people and some that were hanging in the bathrooms were dirty. There were no light bulbs in the table lamps. Only 2 wineglasses. I am not certain that putting a twin bed in the laundry room should be counted as a 7th bedroom. We tried to comply with checkout instructions and start washing the damp towels, but there was no clothes detergent in the laundry room. The final negative was finding cockroaches in the house--some of which unfortunately found their way home in our luggage.

Owner response: We strive to provide the best possible homes with excellent personal service. Our overall positive rating over the last eight years for all of our homes, including this home in particular, confirms that we do a good job. We have a local onsite manager available 24/7 who is responsive to all inquiries. In this case, he attended to the renters numerous times on issues, whether minor or not. He showed them where extra lightbulbs were in the closet and replaced the ones needing it. He showed them the hall closet where we keep dozens of clean sheets and towels. There were plenty of towels provided in the bathrooms as well. The carpets are steam cleaned three times a year and have been done again. The home has more than enough beds to accommodate the maximum capacity of 18 people in the home. And the twin bedroom is a fine carpeted bedroom as described in the listing and photos, separate from the laundry facility. As for the alleged cockroaches, we hired an exterminator immediately, who confirmed what we knew. There are no cockroaches in any of our homes, including this home. No one, including us, has seen a cockroach in the eight years we have been using the home and renting it. And this home is the primary vacation home we use along with our seven children. We are sorry for the experience this renter is claiming. I spent a lot of time with her to try to address her concerns and am at a total loss to explain most of her issues, as many are simply not true. Her rating is unfortunate and simply not consistent with the almost universal positive experiences of our guests over the last eight years.

We had a terrific weekend here. 8 adults, and 10 kids... yet there was plenty of room for all 18 of us, and are already planning to all come back for a do-over next year! The rooms are actually bigger in reality than they appear in the pictures.

Stayed at "The Retreat" in Feb, and had a great time. The house is in a great location in relation to the ski lifts, about 5 min away. Had 10 adults in the group, and had plenty of room for everyone. Would definitely recommend this place for anyone going to enjoy the Massanutten resort!

16 members of my family and friends stayed at the unit during the weekend of Jan. 7-9, 2010. We really enjoyed ourselves. The house rental was right on the massanutten property with no more then a 2 to 4 min drive to the slopes. The house was well put together and we had everything that was needed on the property. The owner was very nice and he accommondated us even though we requested in a short time frame. We would greatly recommend this property to anyone that is looking for a nice get away. The house is located near all attraction on and off the massanutten property. We can wait to revist the property very soon Thank you, William

We stayed here last weekend at the peak of fall colors. We were 6 couples with 6 kids and had a great time here. We loved the open kitchen and living room. The kitchen was well equipped and there were lots of games and DVDs for the kids. The kids loved the bunk beds too. We played a lot of foosball in the game room. They have a covered rear deck which was good for the evenings (no insects because of the mesh). We also had a nice barbecue party one evening. Only if the small bedroom had a queen bed instead of a twin bed, it would have been ideal. The owner gave a very good deal too. So, all in all I would say it is a great place.

Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

We really enjoyed staying at the Retreat for a weekend in October. 12 adults had plenty of room to spread out. Guys loved the game room. Nicely stocked kitchen and very clean overall. Owner was very helpful in suggesting local restaurants/sites as well and very responsive in answering any questions. A little wear and tear around the edges, but overall great place and would stay here again.

Thank you for such a lovely home. Our family of nine including a 17-month old enjoyed the home and game room and surrounding area. We came for snow sports. We enjoyed sightseeing in the area. We all had a great long weekend and the baby especially enjoyed the books and blocks.
