Beverly & I grew up in central North Carolina, but we've called Hatteras Island our second home. 'Rose Cottage' is just steps away from the sandy beach. One of our favorite things is sitting on the porch watching the dolphin (yes, we see them just about every day) and of course the sunrises and sunsets. All three of our bedrooms are upstairs, the master has a king bed with connecting bathroom and a view of the ocean. Another bedroom, very spacious with a queen bed, has two windows with a view of the ocean. The third bedroom has a queen bed. While staying at our cottage, exploring is a must. Hatteras Island is simply the most beautiful place on earth - where the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound is separated by a thin, fragile slice of land. Hatteras Lighthouse, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, small villages of Avon, Buxton, Waves, Frisco and Salvo are all within a short drive.
In Rodanthe, explore the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Museum, Civil War Battle of Chicmacomico Races, and try to identify each of the over 400 species of birds. Or simple lay back and enjoy reading and watching the surf.

Rose Cottage is cozy and comfortable. And right on the beach! The kitchen has everything you could need and more. The three bedrooms are comfortable, with excellent mattresses - not always true in a rental! We tried the fish tacos at every restaurant in Rodanthe and and the neighboring towns. Even off season, there were plenty of places to eat out. In addition, the seafood shop in town was excellent. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful. Be sure to get to the Pea Island wildlife area. The beach at the north end of the island was the best for walking and looking for shells.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

My husband and I just returned home from staying here last week. The first thing we noticed was the perfect location. We had 2 small boys and the beach being just steps away made it so convenient for play time on the beach. The house was beautifully decorated and had everything and more that we needed such as kitchen utensils, drawer space, hangers, etc. Frank and Beverly were more than helpful anytime we had questions and were very quick to respond. You can sit almost anywhere in the house and see the ocean. We even saw dolphins! We hope to stay here again next year. The only downside of this house was leaving it. It was a breath of fresh air.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: We are very happy this family had a great vacation in Rodanthe....We try very hard to make Rose Cottage a special, relaxing and comfortable cottage. We are very appreciative of the positive feedback, and we will continue to make Rose Cottage a place where guests want to return.

We went off season for alone time. The house is well maintained, wonderfully furnished, full of amenities. The area was still recovering from Hurricane Sandy, but the views were gorgeous and the locals were friendly and outgoing.Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Our stay at the Rose Cottage was amazing! We showed up after Hurricane Sandy had left her mark on the Outer Banks. Accss to the island was by ferry but it did not deter us in any way. the ferry system stepped up and accomidated the public. Once on the island it was quiet and restful. Walking on the beach we only ran into 3 people all weekend. This added to the charm of the location. The cottage was perfect and mde you feel at home as soon as you walked thru the door. If there was a downfall to the vacation it was that it came to an end. Hatteras Island has a charm you will never understand until you have experienced it. The Rose Cottage added to that charm. We are all ready trying to plan a return trip.Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway.

My wife and I and two other couples from DC area spent a very relaxing four days at Rose Cottage. For November, the weather was perfect as we spent most of our time walking on the beach, steps away from the cottage. Frank & Beverly were very helpful in guiding us to several great restaurants in Avon and keeping us informed of the road conditions as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Rose Cottage was exceptionally comfortable and well appointed. The cottage was recently renovated and decorated, very evident and quite tastefully done. We hope to book a week during the summer of 2013.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thanks Justin for taking the time to write a review on Rose Cottage. We are very appreciative of your providing a good review, and we are happy your family had a great time. We look forward to having you back.

Not what we would call Oceanfront

Rose Cottage is very cute and is just about as close to the beach/ocean as you can get. However, we specifically searched for homes listed as "Beachfront/Oceanfront" as we want nothing between us and the sand and water. However, there is a long, blue home right in front of Rose Cottage's front porch that blocks about 85% of the front porch of Rose Cottage. I just wish one of the prior reviewers had mentioned this as we honestly would not have booked the house. It is definitely very close to the beach/ocean so if you have young kids or just want to be close then this is great for that. However, when we book oceanfront/beachfront we don't expect a large home to be directly in front of us. Looking back now I see why all the photos are taken at an angle from the front porch of the house. It's a lovely home and the owners were nice to work with (though when we contacted them upon our arrival about the home blocking the oceanview they just replied with an apology and even admitted they were initially concerned about the blue home, too, but that so far no one else had complained about it so they didn't think it was a big deal). They told us that because they're less than 100" from the ocean at high tide that it is considered ocean front but they knew there is a big house right in front of theirs. I just want potential other renters know the honest description of how this home is situated in relation to the view from the front porch.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you Jen for the very kind review and four out of five stars. However, we are somewhat troubled by the comments regarding oceanfront. My comments to you during your stay also indicated our cottage property line was oceanfront and that our cottage had direct access to the beach. We do not view the blue house a negative, now a condemned house. We acknowledge the blue house does hinder some of the view of the ocean but not close to 85%. Our pictures on VRBO are accurate with full views of the ocean. Most important, our rates are more than competitive with any comparable house with like amenities.

Our family had a most wonderful stay at the Rose cottage 8/24/12 thru 9/1/12. Just cross the dune and you are on the beach. The wrap around porch with a swing was a wonderful place to site and watch/listen to the the ocean. The house is very nice and has all the amenities a family needs. The beach is children friendly. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for something reasonably sized and close to the water.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

This was our first trip to the Outer Banks - we loved the house and the location is amazing. Having the ability to see and hear the ocean from both outside and inside the house was so wonderful. If you are traveling with small children, you will greatly appreciate the convenience of having the beach right outside of your front door. Not having to pack everything into the car and drive to the beach made such a huge difference. The beach is not crowded and has a very friendly, laid-back vibe. We met a number of really friendly people who have been vacationing in Rodanthe for years. You'll want to stock up on groceries before your arrival, as there is only one (overpriced) convenience store nearby. Definitely a location for those who like to cook, which suited us just fine. We used the grill almost every night, cooked a lot of fresh seafood. The closest decent restaurants are in Avon or Nags Head and we never really felt like driving 20-30 minutes just to go out to dinner. My only complaints are the things I could not control - the weather and the traffic! It rained and was overcast most of the week. Sun peeked out a couple of times, but that was it. The regulars told us that this was highly unusual. Getting to Rodanthe from DC took 9 hours, as did getting from Rodanthe to DC. The traffic on turnover day was just terrible! Friends who traveled on days other than Saturday told us that it only took them 5 hours. Thanks for such an amazing place in a gorgeous location!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

The rose cottage was the perfect beach vacation spot. The home has everything you need. The location was ideal for the type of vacation I was looking for, (which was simply relaxing). I will say that the mosquitoes can be a bit rough at times, and the wind was fierce on a handful of occasions, but it was an otherwise perfect stay. I look forward to going back again in the future. Thank You Frank and Beverly!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you for a very nice review. We appreciate taking the time to tell other potential guests about our "Rose Cottage". We are very sorry about the mosquitos and we wish we had an answer....I use to be a fast runner but...hope you can make it back next year.

The property was in a great location to the beach and was updated nicely. I enjoyed the large porch and the teenage boys appreciated the internet for gaming. Everything worked as it should and property management responded when we needed them. The house was pet friendly and our goldendoodle quickly settled in to chasing ghost crabs and seagulls. We truly enjoyed the rest and relaxation that this cottage provided.Owner response: We appreciate the kind remarks about our "Rose Cottage". We also spend lots of time on the porch reading, napping, eating, and we are very happy to hear everything worked well for you. We spend a great effort to ensure everything is working properly, A/C, showers, outside grill, outside shower, refrig, etc...sometimes things do happen but we are fortunate to have a great Property Manager who takes care of things for us. We are happy your rest and relaxation was beneficial. We also hope you will consider coming back sometime in the future.

About the owner: Frank and Beverly are the proud owners of 'Rose Cottage' as well as two other properties closeby. We have been vacationing/living on the outer banks for years and will retire in Rodanthe someday. It is the perfect place to be. Both Frank and Beverly are NC licensed builders. Frank retired from the US Marine Corps. We have two Brussels Griffons, Frankie and Annie Rose, and they always travel with us to the Outer Banks.
Why the Owner Chose Rodanthe:
The Outer Banks has been our favorite vacation spot for years. This is the third, and most recent, property we have bought in this area. It's easy driving from our home in Greensboro, NC. It's close to great restaurants, shopping, golf, sightseeing yet very remote and very casual. Also, the Outer Banks is routinely rated in the top five US beaches by US News, National Geographic, ABC News and CBS News.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Sitting on the front porch in the evening while enjoying a glass of wine or ice tea, feeling the ocean breeze while watching late surfers and swimmers has become our most treasured time. Early in the morning, we'll catch up on news and sports via wifi while sipping coffee and snacking on delicious pastries.
