Salt Spring Island house description
Sunset Cottage is perfectly named. The sunsets and views here are simply stunning. Sit in peace, quiet and privacy by the oceanfront and enjoy glorious hours of ocean, island and mountain views, passing boats, ever changing light and birds (eagles, herons and many others).
The cottage sits on a private, gated, sunny acre of land with a small orchard and English gardens. It has a lovely wood burning fireplace, hardwood floors, comfortable furnishings, and a private gate and path to the ocean where you can walk and gather shells, launch canoes or kayaks and swim. There is a fully equipped kitchen with a bright breakfast area overlooking the garden, ocean and islands. There are two bedrooms, one with comfortable king sized bed, 2 piece ensuite bathroom and doors to a private deck. The other bedroom has a comfortable queen sized bed and a set of bunk beds. This bedroom is adjacent to, and has a door to, a 4 piece bathroom with separate shower, jetted tub and a washer and dryer concealed behind bifold doors. There is a clothesline to catch the ocean breezes if you prefer. All cotton bed linens and towels are provided.
The house is best suited for one or two couples, however, it will sleep 6 people in beds. The large living-dining room has wide ocean views, a dining table for 6, comfortable furniture, a flat screen TV with cable, a DVD player, and a wood burning fireplace. Books, jig-saw puzzles, games and some DVD's are provided for guests' enjoyment. There is an ocean-side deck with a table for 4, and 6 outdoor chairs for the lawn or deck. A Weber propane barbecue and Wifi are included.
This lovely, west-facing cottage is in the peaceful, pastoral north end of Saltspring island, 5 minutes from Vesuvius and 12 minutes from the town of Ganges. It is close to hiking trails, artists' studios, and farms with fresh free range eggs and local produce.
Salt Spring is the largest of the Gulf Islands and is an ideal get-away vacation spot. From May to October the town of Ganges hosts the famous Saturday outdoor market where you can buy arts and crafts, farm-fresh vegetables, island-made cheeses, and homemade treats. On Salt Spring you can also enjoy fishing, golfing, hiking, ocean kayaking, theater, and a brand new recreation centre. The cottage is a 12 minute drive from Ganges, the heart of Salt Spring Island, where visitors can enjoy restaurants, pubs, art galleries, and boutiques and the bustling and picturesque harbour. The pretty seaside village of Vesuvius with its warm, sandy ocean beach, charming coffee shop and Seaside Restaurant (great fish and chips and seafood and scrumptious home-made desserts) is a 5 minute drive. Pringle farm, which breeds arabian horses and offers riding is very close to the cottage. These magnificent animals are often in the pasture close to the cottage road.
We hope you will come and enjoy all that Sunset Cottage and Saltspring Island have to offer.

Perfect Beach Vacation in every way!
Perfect Beach Vacation in every way!
We spent two weeks at this idyllic cottage on the water. This is a perfect and peaceful place to relax, swim, and paddle. The home is cozy and very comfortable. It has everything you need and the owner is very helpful. The yard slopes down to the water. You can swim from the beach and launch kayaks there. The view is spectacular! The property faces west and gets sun most of the day, but the best part is the beautiful sunsets. Saltspring is fantastic for cycling and you can walk to an amazing network of trails for running or hiking across the street from the cottage. We had a truly wonderful vacation there.

wow! what a wee gem of a cottage this is. So comfortable for a family of 4. Amazing views and sunsets to die for! More than anything else, the space is huge - a front and back yard to run around in and the beach is on the door step. our kids were never out of the water, either swimming or kayaking, rock pooling or fishing. it has been one of our favorite family holidays and such good value for money - thank you.

A perfect setting for a restful vacation
A perfect setting for a restful vacation
We thorougly enjoyed our stay at the Sunset Cottage. The setting at the north end of Salt Spring Island was perfect for viewing sunsets from the outdoor deck. We were treated to an especially spectacular sunset one evening, with pink highlights on the underside of fluffy clouds in the sky and a ribbon of orange above mountains in the distance. The beds were very comfortable and we all slept well every night. This was our fifth visit to Salt Spring Island and the cottage was, by far, the best accommodations we have experienced to date. We highly recommend this cottage for your stay on Salt Spring Island.

Beautiful Salt Spring Island Retreat
Beautiful Salt Spring Island Retreat
Sunset Cottage was a wonderful location to spend a relaxing week away from the grind of urban living. Travel to the property took a while with the flight, car rental, ferry ride and drive to the location. I was tired and a bit anxious by the time we arrived. My first view of the property, however, banished all my anxieties. The cottage is on a large treed property in a quiet location right on the waterfront. We were there in February and the snowdrops were in bloom; it looked like in summer there would be many lovely flowers and plants. We hurried out to find the path down to the beach and went out onto the shingle finding masses of starfish sheltering in the tidal pools beneath the rocks. The cottage itself was perfect for us, clean, well-supplied and well-maintained. We spent many hours in the kitchen enjoying the magnificent view of the strait. We also loved the jacuzzi bath. The owner was very helpful in answering all of my questions and responded quickly to emails. Although we didn't need the second bedroom, it could hold 4 people (queen bed and bunks) making the property suitable for a young family. One complaint- - loud construction noise from major internal and external renovations next door during the week-days, from 8:00 to roughly 5:30. The project clearly had been underway before we arrived. The owner claims not to have known about it. It was very disappointing and the only down note of the trip. The island has many hikes of differing lengths and difficulty: there was a useful guide available at the information centre in Ganges, the main town. There were a number of good restaurants in the area -- although it is necessary to drive anywhere from the cottage as it is not in the town itself -- most of the restaurants offer a number of vegetarian and gluten-free items which suited us. Staff in the restaurants and stores were friendly and helpful. You don't need to leave Canada to get away from winter.

Owner response: Thank you for your review and feedback. We are sorry about the construction noise - we didn't know this was going to happen. I am happy to say that the next door project is now finished and our new neighbours - a retired couple - have now moved in. The peace and quiet has returned. We are here ourselves for a week and can attest to that.
The home is a lovely and well maintained older home with charming garden with several bird baths and private entry down to the water. The water is perfect for kayaking and other quiet water activity. The rocky beach is fun for beach combing, watching the calm waves roll on, or to enjoy the resident bald eagles or otters! The home is clean and welcoming. The spacious patio or kitchen nook are perfect to enjoy the amazing views while enjoying your meals. The owner is friendly and helpful, providing info about the island and the immediate area as you need. Although you don't need to go anywhere, these are some of the places we enjoyed while there: hiking Mt. Maxwell and Mt. Erskine, visiting quaint Fulford Harbour, the Ganges markets and Ruckells Park. The Salt Spring Cheese Farm was also charming and tasty. The local tourism office was very helpful and recommended most of the places we went!

Brilliant family holiday home!
Brilliant family holiday home!
We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at Sunset Cottage, although it wasn't really "sunset weather". The house configuration worked very well for two couples, giving each good privacy and very expansive shared space. We did light a fire one evening, which was very cosy. What distinguishes this house is the "four million dollar" view and the lovely informal gardens. Our grandchildren enjoyed finding crabs on the beach and launching driftwood boats. Altogether a wonderful family spot.

Long weekend visit
What a great view and a great place. We had great weather and a wonderful time. Very comfortable bed in the large bedroom. Kitchen and outdoor grill were used and appreciated. Went hiking across the road on the hiking trails that were very well kept and maintained. Got a lead from the owner and rented Kayak from Andale Kayaking and that worked out well when he delivered and picked up the equipment from the boat launch. It was outstanding.

Owner response: Thank you Mark. So glad you and your family were able to be together on this beautiful island. I hope you come back.
My husband, his parents, and myself spent an amazing week at Sunset Cottage! Carol was incredibly helpful and prompt in answering any questions that we had and provided maps, local pamphlets, and papers to familiarize ourselves with the area. We thoroughly enjoyed going to the Farmers Market on Saturday in Ganges, visiting Saltspring Island Cheese Farm and seeing the new baby goats after tasting and buying cheeses and icecream, going for fish and chips at Vesuvius, and wandering the various beaches (including the one at the Cottage) when the tide was out. It was fabulous to come home, after our various adventures, to enjoy a a meal cooked on the BBQ with a good bottle of wine while enjoying the view. Watching the otters playing off the dock almost every day was truly wonderful! We loved eating at the kitchen table for the view of the water and the spectacular sunsets from which the cottage derives it's most appropriate name! The windows that run the full length of the house facing the water allow for great views and fabulous light and combined with the homey cottage furnishings and thoughtful decorating choices, Carol and Mike really have created a wonderfully peaceful and relaxing escape from the city that I hope to experience again soon! Also, I was quite pleased with the quality and comfort of the beds and linens provided as I have found that to not always be the case ...these were very comfortable and we slept soundly. I can't express how much I enjoyed our stay other than to say that I can't wait to return and that I have found myself thinking longingly of the cottage all this week since our return! Thanks again Carol and Mike for allowing us the opportunity to experience Saltspring Island and stay at your lovely home!

About the owner: We are an almost-retired professional couple who plan to spend our post-work years in this lovely place. In the meantime we hope others will appreciate it and enjoy it as much as we do. We have furnished it for easy living and comfort. We relish the peace and quiet and stunning vistas, and enjoy all that Saltspring has to offer including the ambience, the famous summer Saturday market, the stunning scenery and pastoral charm, the fresh local food, the artisans and musicians and the sense of community.
Why the Owner Chose Salt Spring Island:
It is simply beautiful and peaceful - a world apart and yet full of the vibrancy of an artistic and resourceful community. You will find world class fresh local food here as well as great restaurants and art and a general sense of peace and well being.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
It restores and refreshes us and connects us to the natural world and the things in life that really matter. To sleep here with open windows, complete quiet and only the moon and the stars lighting the night sky is a delight.
