Seward cabin description

Orca Island Cabins offers unique yurt accommodations on a private island and mainland acreage in scenic Humpy Cove. Guests are provided with water transportation to and from the island which is a 30 minute boat ride from Seward. Upon arrival at the island, guests enjoy comfortable and stylish overnight accommodations with Alaska wildlife and marine life right outside your cabin door. Enjoy whale watching, kayaking, fishing and hiking; or just sit back, relax and observe wildlife from your private deck - a very special Alaska experience. 3 yurts are located on Orca Island and 2 yurts are positioned on mainland property next to the island connected by an 80 ft. footbridge. Each yurt cabin sleeps 2 to 4 persons with a queen bed and a double futon. Linens are provided, including pillows, blankets and comforters. The five self-contained, eco-friendly cabins have solar power; and each cabin features a kitchen with propane range, complete set of dishes, basic cookware, a dining and comfortable living area, propane cabin heater, and private bathroom with shower and compost toilet. Each cabin has a large private deck with barbecue grill and Adirondack chairs. Guests need only bring their food and drink and enjoy their home cooking in a majestic setting surrounded by ocean vistas and snow capped mountains. Guests often prepare fish that are caught on the island during their stay. And many guests end their day around a campfire.

Guests can kayak to a salmon stream and waterfall within Humpy Cove; fish off the island's dock; explore tide-pools and the intertidal zone around the island; and observe marine wildlife from their private deck, including Orca and Humpback whales, harbor seals, harbor porpoise, Steller sea lions, sea and land otters, and bald eagles.

Orca Island Cabins offers their guests the opportunity to have a remote Alaskan wilderness experience in both comfort and style.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2004

About the owner: Your hosts, Dennis and Susan Swiderski, are long-time Alaskans. Susan, born in New Mexico, came to Alaska in 1969 and is a fine artist. Dennis, originally from Michigan, was practicing law in 1977 in Washington D.C. when he seized the opportunity to relocate in Alaska to practice law with a telecommunications company in Anchorage. After Dennis and Susan married in 1982 and while raising three boys, they operated an eight-bedroom Anchorage bed and breakfast for six years. In 1996, the Swiderski’s moved to Seward and operated a scenic wildlife viewing and charter cruise business. In time they served as naturalists aboard a catamaran charter that cruised the waters of the Kenai Fjords National Park; and managed the Kenai Fjords Salmon Bake and Lodge on Fox Island.

                      Why the Owner Chose Seward:
Even though the island and mainland acreage were undeveloped at the time of their acquisition, we saw the potential in developing an eco-friendly cabin rental business in such a quiet and scenic setting. The protected waters within Humpy Cove, the scenic coastline and the abundance of marine wildlife together begged for a conservation-oriented and respectful approach to developing this property for both our enjoyment and that of our future guests. In addition, the seascapes and landscapes of Resurrection Bay and nearby waters have been a constant source of inspiration for Susan in her paintings of the area. A number of Susan's paintings and other artistic creations are displayed in each yurt.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
We derive considerable satisfaction from the reaction of our guests who regularly thank us for sharing Orca Island with them. They appreciate the fact that we have chosen a course of development that both emphasizes conservation and sustainable energy practices; and they particularly appreciate experiencing the serenity and beauty of this remote island and cove and the opportunity to do so in very comfortable accommodations. The variety of wildlife viewed from the island itself constantly amazes both the owners and their guests. We find our involvement in owning and operating Orca Island Cabins and sharing these accommodations with guests from around the world an enriching, educational and memorable experience for all of us.
