Santiago Atitlan house description
Nestled on the slopes of San Pedro Volcano and overlooking the two volcanos of Santiago, you'll find the property called Orchids on the Lake. It's the perfect, quiet natural retreat and a very special place to experience the lake. The site was used for sacred Mayan ceremonies and is adjacent to the location of the ancient Mayan civilization of Chuitinamit.
Secluded and yet close to civilization, the property is just a 3 minute boat ride across the picture perfect bay to the town of Santiago, Atitlan.
Extensive stone walkways lined with rock gardens lead up to the house, 40 meters up the volcano. Luxuriate in a stylish 2 bedroom house on 2 levels with extensive verandas, 3 stone fireplaces, and accents of traditional local stonework.
The property is off the grid and is powered by solar. Two friendly dogs live on site as well as Misha the cat.
Your on site host couple will help you organize your sightseeing and any special interests you have.
Shopping is excellent in nearby Santiago. Colorful textiles are a specialty. And in the extensive food market in the center of town, you'll find locally grown fresh produce of all kinds. As well as chicken, beef and pork. The full kitchen is set up for creative cooking and is stocked with condiments. So enjoy.
Hundreds of orchids are to be found all over the 2 acres of the property as well as huge cacti and flowering trees.
And you'll never be bored with the ever changing panorama of water, town and volcanoes. Enchanting!
A short boat trip away are all the small towns which dot the lake. Each one has its own unique character with an emphasis on artisan products as in Santiago, New Age as San Marcos, San Pedro's fun and funky character and others. You'll never be bored.
After your days exploring, the property is the perfect place to come back to. Relax in a comfortable chair on the veranda and take in the scenery. It's breathtaking.

The PERFECT base to see the lake and surrounding areas.
The PERFECT base to see the lake and surrounding areas.
This was our second visit to Orchids on the Lake and both visits have been memorable. The tranquil surroundings and stunning views are very special. We would sit on the front patio all day and just soak up the ever changing landscape as the sun hits the volcanos/mountains. Clouds sometimes float past at eye level making it all feel surreal. Hummingbirds hover around the plants/flowers in the beautiful garden and an evening firefly show is a perfect end to the night. The twinkling lights of Santiago are just across the bay. We love this place because of the privacy, serenity and peacefulness. However, the bustling town of Santiago is just a few minutes boat ride away. It has a great market for fresh food and veggies and a great selection of local crafts. All of the other towns around the lake are easily accessible by boat, which is the main form of travel around the lake. We were given the numbers of a couple of boat operators and you just call them up, like ordering a taxi. You have the choice of zipping over to Santiago to catch a regular boat service to any part of the lake or do a ‘privado’ trip with the boat all to yourself. The regular service costs around $2 and a private trip about $15. The house itself is gorgeous. Local stonework gives it a very rustic feel. The kitchen provides everything you need to cook up a storm with local produce. Each bedroom has an open fireplace and the beds are very comfortable. Cable TV and internet service was also available. The house was very clean and well maintained. Our host, Cynthia, couldn’t have been more helpful. She provided us with all the local information, which is invaluable when you are new to the place. There is a great selection of restaurants, art galleries, and markets all around the lake. We went trekking up the volcano, which was exhilarating, and we loved strolling around the stone walkways of the property. I thoroughly recommend Orchids on the Lake as THE place to stay when visiting Lake Atitlan.

Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: I decided to move to Central America in 1999, leaving behind my life as a professional caterer in Kelowna, Canada. I settled in Panama and rode the wave for 8 years there as it became the hottest investment spot. Wanting to return to a little peace and quiet, I started looking around, discovered Guatemala and specifically, Lake Atitlan. Fell in love with the area as so many do and I came back whenever I could until I sold my properties in Panama.
Why the Owner Chose Santiago Atitlan:
After looking at a lot of properties, I was taken to this one, in Chuitinamit, a sacred area which is the site of the ancient Mayan city. Instantly it felt like home. It just spoke to me. The beauty, the tranquility, the view...more than what I had been looking for. I knew instantly that this was it.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
I loved the winding stone walkways lined with gardens that lead up the hill. The view is everchanging as you get higher and higher, breathtaking. And reaching the top, the surprise was the classic stone house, simple but beautifully laid out. I have since built a second story with 2 bedrooms and a second bathroom, in the same style as the first part.
