'Winding Ridge' a Mountaintop Home with Incredible Views!
- Minimum stay:N/A

- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
A marvelous mountain lodge completed in 2002 and set on top of a ridge in the middle of 175 acres with long vistas in all directions. This mountain getaway is located just four miles from the village of Hot Springs and the Homestead Resort. Much of the adjoining land and view-shed of Winding Ridge is part of the George Washington National Forest. Because of this there is not another house in sight, and hardly a light visible at night!
The lodge offers a great room with stone fireplace, study with sofa bed and adjoining full bath, master bedroom with a queen sized bed and en suite bath. Second bedroom has a antique double bed and shares a bath with the third bedroom which has three single beds. Access the crow's nest from the spiral staircase - the perfect place to enjoy 360 degree mountain views and the stars at night. The screened porch and beautiful stone terrace provide outdoor living and dining space as well. For enjoyment inside, there is a collection of board games, a large selection of classic and children's videos, and an eclectic library.
Take to the woods and enjoy miles of trails, or just take a casual walk down to a mountain stream. Catch a glimpse of wildlife such as whitetail deer, or if you are lucky a black bear. A search for native flowering plants on the property can come up with flame azaleas, mountain laurel or rhododendron. One of the Homestead bridle trails, Winding Trail, crosses through the property.
If you need a break from nature we have satelite TV, wireless internet, and a stereo with a cord to connect your phone or Ipod. There are speakers on the porch as well as inside. There are no neighbors within miles, so crank it up if you like!

We stayed here in January, and loved the huge fireplace, snow on the ground, and hikes around the property. The house is decorated so beautifully, and it's very well-equipped - there is nothing you will need to bring for the kitchen, or laundry - it's all there! We loved staying in this area, driving through the "little Switzerland" of Virginia, and taking our dogs to swim at Lake Moomaw. Also had a fantastic dinner in Warm Springs at the Inn at Gristmill. Next time we plan to book reservations for the spa at the Homestead. You could stay at this house and have a very private, quiet trip, or take advantage of many outdoor activities in the area, and activities at The Homestead - either way, this house is a fantastic choice.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners.

I stood watching the sun rise over the mountain this morning. With coffee cup in hand, before the three bay window, it began as a faint blue. As light increased, a silvery frost highlighted the landscape before me. Forcing myself to stay put, stubborn brown leaves now appeared guilded, bare branches glistened, and pine needles tipped. Pulling over a stool I sat and sipped, the place where the sun would rise was now a glow! - and soon the intensity of the flow caused me to look away. It is now time to pack and go - this is after all my last day. Parting such sweet sorrow.......Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

What a beautiful vacation home! We were exploring a new part of the country and stumbled onto a truly comfortable, relaxing place to stay. Right form the start, the owners were so helpful with helping us plan our trip. We enjoyed exploring the area, fly fished at the Homestead and Hidden Valley, rented a pontoon boat on Lake Moomaw, relaxed at the Homestead, golfed at the Homestead and Cliff View (a bit of a drive, but cheap). But, we especially enjoyed the peace and quiet at Winding Ridge. The fully stocked kitchen, wonderful living spaces, and amazing porch views made us look forward to coming back there after that days exploring. I would definitely recommend this home to anyone looking to come to the area. PS The driveway proved to be an excellent training location for the runners in our house.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+.

Winding Ridge is a fantastic place for one or two families to stay while enjoying everything Bath County has to offer. The house itself is spectacular for the interior floorplan and aesthetic, the dramatic views from atop a mountain and the complete solitude. It is very convenient (<10 minute drive) to Hot Springs and Warm Springs for dining and shopping -- though options are limited, there are some great places (e.g., Waterwheel $$$, Cuccis $$, Lindsay's Roost $). We registered at The Homestead for a day pass and were able to enjoy access to the resort and activities. Yet that is all the touristy stuff (which in all honesty is what made us comfortable with the idea of vacationing here in the first place). Once we got to Winding Ridge we quickly realized that the real draw was the natural beauty of the area. Beautiful scenery was found everywhere we went. We spent a lot of time at places like Lake Moomaw and Hidden Valley hiking and fishing ... and relaxing. We enjoyed quiet evenings at the house hunting for fossils, watching the sun set and the moon rise in the crows nest, then watching a family movie in the den. As another reviewer commented, spending time here made us want to spend more time, which is probably the greatest complement you can give to an area.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, age 55+.

We were lucky enough to find Winding Ridge available for Thanksgiving that we spent with some great friends. The house is in such a beautiful setting on its own mountain top, and had so many great ammenities to keep the kids busy that we never felt the need to go anywhere else. The views from the house were incredible, and every night was spent in the cupola enjoying the sunset. We went on many walks around the property to explore the wildlife. Unfortunately the pictures of the house and setting do not give it justice, it is truly something that needs to be seen and experienced in person. We fell in love with the area so much during the trip that it actually inspired us enough to find a retreat of our own, otherwise we would be making monthly plans to keep going back to Winding Ridge. This house is truly spectacular and our only suggestion is to stay as long as you possibly can, it is absolutely worth it.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+.

Moomaw Madness Weekend! We came to Bath to race the triathlon but discovered so much more to do in the area. The house is perfectly suited for families and stocked with enough games, toys, & books to keep a broad range of kids happy. Thanks for creating such a great family friendly mountain retreat!"Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Our third annual trip here left us wishing we could stay longer. Although we love exploring Bath County, we are also perfectly content spending an afternoon taking in the magnificent views in the porch. Everything in the cabin from the books, artwork and furniture fits perfectly. Everything is comfortable, clean and inviting. Our annual trips will remain a tradition here. We can't think of any place else we would rather be!"Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Location
Owner info
About the owner: My grandfather searched Bath and Highland for more than a decade before finding a nearby property in Dunn's Gap in 1965. I spent summers and holidays there as a youth, roaming the woods and streams ingrained in me a love of the area.
Why the Owner Chose Hot Springs:
My family bought the property now known as Winding Ridge in the 1980's. After much hiking of the area in all seasons, calculation of the sun angles at solstice and equinox, we selected the site. Using Staunton architect John Moore and local builder Lee Fry we broke ground in 2001 and completed construction in 2002. The stone for the fireplace and chimney is local Bath County sandstone, layed up by the skilled father/son mason team of Curtis and Jeff Lowry. The road and the dry stone retaining walls were built by another father son team of Burton and Mike Trimble. We endeavored to use as much local material as possible.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We have enjoyed having our three sons, now teenagers, grow up free to explore and discover the wonders of nature that are right outside the door of Winding Ridge.
