Famous The first settlers came to the Bradford area in 1848 and with an abundant water supply and virgin timber, the town grew. By 1856, Bradford had 500 residents and was the first town in this part of Iowa. A young music teacher named William Pitts was traveling by stagecoach from Wisconsin to Iowa to visit his future wife. While waiting for the stagecoach horses to be changed, he walked down Cedar Street and saw the empty lot where the church now stands. Being a romantic young man, the thought came to him of what a charming setting the spot would make for a church. Returning home, he wrote the poem “Church in the Wildwood".
Charles City, Iowa – Iowa’s first whitewater park is officially open! Charles City has built a whitewater course on the Cedar River for all river enthusiasts, including: kayakers, tubers, rafters, boaters and stand-up paddle boarders. The course is now completed and open for public use.
“It’s the best whitewater within 500 miles!” declared Ty Graham of Prairie Rapid Paddlers.
Lakeshore Park features an 8/10 of a mile walking trail through lush, green canopies of trees and wide open spaces. Here you may encounter fellow hikers or people exercising their dogs. You may encounter people relaxing on a grassy slope reading a book or boater's and fishermen putting out to the lake on the ramp and dock. Lakeshore is pleasant, uncrowded, and relaxing. Who knows? You just might make a new friend there.
