Vacation Home in the Historic Old Sierra City Schoolhouse
- Minimum stay:2 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Newly updated and restored our vacation home is located in the Old Sierra City Schoolhouse. The school was built in 1868 and served as a public school until it was closed in 1952. We are located on the Main Street and easy walking distance to the river and downtown Sierra City. The front of the schoolhouse is currently an art studio and still retains the original old chalkboards on the walls and the wavy old glass in the tall windows. The back portion of the large building is now the warm, comfortable house that is perfect for a family or couples who enjoy a private place to relax. We have WiFi with a 42' screen TV but find that most of our guests spend time sitting outside on the peaceful deck while they BBQ. You can spend the day hiking, fishing, mountain biking and exploring all that the Sierra Buttes area has to offer. In the evening, the Kentucky Mine has outdoor concerts in the summers. Walking around Sierra City you can eat at the local restrauants or pack a picnic lunch and sit alongside one of our fifty lakes taking in the view. Golfing in Graeagle is an easy twenty five minute drive over the Gold Lake Road. We are a family owned business and live in Sierra City year around. We strive to provide the best accommodations and most comfortable way for you to enjoy the area. We are open all year.
Keywords: Lovely newly remodeled vacation home in the Circa 1868 Sierra City Schoohouse. Located on Main St. with a breathtaking view of the Sierra Buttes from the front yard. Walking distance to restrauants and stores downtown and the North Fork of the Yuba River. A ten minute drive to the Lakes Basin Recreation area. Enjoy hiking, fishing, gold panning, boating, mountain biking, snowmobiling, swimming and sking right outside your door. Open all year. Family friendly with WiFi, full kitchen, laundry and a private deck.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1973
About the owner: I have lived in Sierra County since the early 70's and retired from Law Enforcement here. My husband Don also recently retired and can't imagine ever living anywhere else. My parents lived in the Old Sierra City Schoolhouse and operated a lumber and hardware business in the building. We have raised and schooled our children here in and we are passionately committed to our community. Don is the gardner and you will see his garden in the Schoolhouse yard. I hike almost every day with my two dogs. We often have a large group of hikers and dogs and spend most days in the Lakes Basin.
Why the Owner Chose Sierra City:
My husband and I decided to begin to restore the Schoolhouse two years ago after my father's passing. Preserving the character of our building has become a priority for us. With our family and friend's help, we are realizing our dream to bring the Schoolhouse back to life. Now we will begin the landscaping and vegetable garden at the Schoolhouse, a wonderful summer project. Like the vacation rental itself, this too will be a labor of love.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
There are few places left on earth where you can enjoy the sense of community spirit like Sierra City. You will find the locals friendly and welcoming. Sit behind the Schoolhouse and enjoy the quiet backyard or sit out front and find yourself visiting with the many people walking by who take the time to talk. The most important feature of our home is that you can almost hear the children running down the porch, playing in the yard, and you can see where one hundred years ago, naughty boys scratched their initials on the walls outside. We've saved the carvings. Some of the former students are in their 80's. Now and then a gray haired man or woman will stop by and begin to tell stories of growing up in Sierra City and attending school in our building. We've gathered photos and stores of the School and its history. Hiking trails abound. Swimming in the cold crystal clear water in the many lakes is a must. Mountain Biking is easy with shuttle busses available to take you to the top of Packer Saddle for a wild ride into Downieville. Fishing in the lakes, streams and rivers is just minutes away. In the winter, you can snowmobile and ice fish. We have plenty of parking for ATV's, boats or trailers. Summers offer horseback riding at Gold Lake. Bird watching is a popular past time, expecially in the Sierra Valley where you find the headwaters of the Feather River.
