Great House for relaxing stay in Fort Davis
Great House for relaxing stay in Fort Davis

Great house! The house is large and roomy enough for multiple families and has everything you might possibly need. This rental house kitchen was stocked with pots and pans that you could cook a gourmet meal if you choose too, the house even comes with an outside grill. No skimping on any detail! The owners thought of everything including coffee with nice sized mugs for a relaxing morning on the porch; right down to the flashlight in the kitchen drawer so that I could find my way outside while doing some tremendous stargazing!! The area around Fort Davis has some of the darkest skies in the country. The town of Fort Davis is very cute and the house's location makes it close enough to walk to main street for shops and restaurants. The Fort itself is just a few blocks away with great hiking trails. Indian Lodge is just a few miles away with McDonald Observatory just a half an hour away perfect for their Star Parties. We had a great time and will certainly be back!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Our family has made a tradition of spending a week in West TX after Christmas, and we decided to include 3 nights in Fort Davis on our recent trip. There were 11 of us total, ranging from young teens to my parents-in-law, 88 & 87. We rented the Rock House plus two rooms at the Old Schoolhouse B&B, a 5-minute walk away; and it worked perfectly for us. We found hosts Carla and Steve gracious, very helpful; and the two couples staying in the B&B thoroughly enjoyed the outstanding breakfasts every day. All of us enjoyed walking to downtown Fort Davis, as well as to the Fort, always a lovely site. The house is definitely set up for large groups, plenty of cookware, dishes, etc., to allow us to fix meals for a crowd. We all liked the key-coded entry door, too; no need for trading keys back and forth. We hope to return to the Rock House and/or the Old Schoolhouse on our next foray to Fort Davis!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks for the kind words. We thought this combination of the vacation rental and the B&B was the best of both worlds, and we are glad you agree. Thanks for your respectful treatment of our facilities that make it possible for others to enjoy them as well. We look forward to seeing you again next year.

My friends and I were in Ft Davis for the Cyclefest and stayed at the Rock House. What a great place to stay! Very roomy! Beds were very comfortable. The kitchen had about everything you would need to cook your meals if you wanted to. Plenty of towels for the bathrooms. Got to see some wildlife from the big window in the living room area. Would stay there again in a heart beat!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My brother and I brought our 96 year old mother to Ft Davis to visit my older brother and stayed at the Rock House. It could not have been nicer. The rooms were all large and roomy and the amenities were excellent. The web site is a very accurate discription of the house and the amenities. We would all recommend to frinds and other family members to stay at the Rock House. We also enjoyed watching the Mule Deer in the back yard.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2010
About the owner: Steve and Carla are life-long Texans, having grown up in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. We graduated from Baylor University before heading to Austin for 25 years in the industrial sector. We raised our family there, and founded a welding supply business. After we sold our business, we headed west to establish the Old Schoolhouse Bed and Breakfast in Fort Davis. Our life here has been great. .
Why the Owner Chose Fort Davis:
We came to Fort Davis in 1999 to live more simply. As long-time owners of the Old Schoolhouse Bed and Breakfast in Fort Davis, we saw a need for an alternative accommodations here. In 2011 The Rock House at Sleeping Lion Mountain became available as a vacation rental. This property offers the right opportunities for small groups or families to feel right at home while still on vacation.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The Rock House offers the best combination of the feeling of serenity with the convenience of proximity to town. Everything you need is nearby, but you feel that you're living in a private mountain canyon.
