Lovely s.c. accommodation including a Tower to let, at L'Elzet Gites, a unique château-style farmhouse nestled in the hillside with fantastic views overlooking the valley below and beyond. Pool & 5 hectares of woodlands in Cevennes foothills nr St Jean du Gard (above Montpellier and NW of Nimes on a map), in Languedoc France.
Every season has its beauty in this idyllic location nr St Jean du Gard and the magnificent Cevennes National Park.
Near village amenities (1km walk 1.5km drive) with shops, bar restaurant(s), tennis, horse and donkey riding; superb crystal clear river swimming, walks including the famous Stevenson Trail.
1hr30mins to the Med. Some visitors have called it a paradise.
Many great reviews and repeat bookings!
Ideally suited to a couple or family this pretty, rustic, converted chestnut drier barn cottage enjoys lovely views from its terrace. It's cool in Summer, cosy in Winter with heating & log burner. Open-plan living/dining and kitchen. First floor double bedroom, open plan area has 1 set of bunk beds, matching single bed, through to bathroom with shower over. The sunny patio has dining/garden furniture & BBQ.
Our village has a great bakery/patisserie, small but well stocked very french Spar supermarket, post office, and bar restaurant(s) which serve good food. There is tennis, football, a riding centre, river swimming, doctor surgery, paramedics and air ambulance in emergencies (just comforting to know you can get to a hospital urgently if you have to). however there are great local markets Tuesdays and Saturdays at the towns of St Jean du Gard and Thursdays at historic Anduze, which sell not just traditional local cullinary products but a wealth of colourful artizan made products and wares to tempt you.
This area is a jewel in the diverse region of Languedoc in the South of France. Visit Spring and Autumn- each and every season offers a very different holiday experience and you are more inclined to be adventurous when it is less hot. Just in case - all gites have heating. Two of our gîtes have a cosy log burner.
We are in the South East of the Cevennes, on the border of both Lozere and Gard. This means we are ideally placed for not just the National Park, but also Nimes and the nature reserve of the Camargue, or south to Montpellier and the sea, west to Uzes, the roman Pont du Gard and Avignon Provence.
There are too many adventure activities in the Cevennes to mention - hiking, mountain biking, mountaineering, canoeing. rafting, water tubing, tree assault courses, climbing, caving to name a few.
The CEVENNES NATIONAL PARK IS MAGNIFICENT - The rugged beauty and diversity of granite meeting limestone means sheer ridges, deep gorges, rivers, and dramatic limestone caves to thrill. The scenery is breathtakingly spectacular. This UNESCO protected Biosphère' has more than 2400 animal species and unique flora from mediterannean through to alpine species.. You will find a classic way of life here, with its mix of mountain, valley pastures, farmlands and many ancient villages and the total of all of this, and its culture, is protected by UNESCO and now a WORLD HERITAGE SITE.
The border of the park has been extended to include Saint Etienne Vallee Francaise which is an area of outstanding natural beauty, and is part of the Stevenson trail (GR70) and many other beautiful walks. A 'Must See and Do in Autumn is a drive along the' Corniches des Cevennes through fabulous colours and scenery with swathes of sweet chestnut coppers and golds.
Robert Louis Stevenson wrote the book 'Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes'). You can find a link to read this book, or read more about the Cevennes and its rich history including that of the Camisards, Hugenots and famous people from this region who made their mark in its culture and history on our website.

We were made most welcome and enjoyed a superb week, favoured by near-perfect weather, Jeaves prepared a splendid repast for our arrival and we dined with her on our final evening - another exquisite meal, enjoyed in the grand manner, in her home. Please let Jeaves know how much we appreciated her company and her delightful accommodation. L'Elzet is no ordinary gite!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

....... We discovered what I consider to be the best river swimming in France in the aquamarine and crystal clear waters of the local nearby river at La Cascade. The shaded shingle riverside areas are ideal for lazing away warm summer or autumn days.............. If travel you must from L'Elzet, there are numerous local attractions on offer - the Cevennes National Park; steam train to Anduze; the Bambouserie at Anduze itself; magnificent caves; Ales with its superior shopping facilities; and the excellent local museums with their insight into Cevenol rural life and history...........Our visit to L'Elzet marked the start of a love affair which will hopefully last a long time!Did you find this review helpful? Dearest Jeaves, We hope your birthday was filled with all the love and surprises that you gave to all of us! We often find ourselves basking in the memory of our time with you last May. We have been blessed to be able to journey around the world and experience exotic and beautiful places and people. But nothing equals the warmth and generosity we experienced at L'Elzet. May the blessings you bestow on others return to you one thousand times over!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0
