Grand Marais house description

The 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin' is a restored historic commercial fisherman's home built of logs around 1900. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. We are less than 100 yards from the water. There are 3 well appointed bedrooms, 2 full baths, a huge dining room, a roomy pine living room with gas woodstove fireplace, a front cedar porch, and a natural slate patio. The original log home with it's well appointed kitchen and huge dining room is the core of the structure. The logs for the Cabin were hand hewn a century ago and show the broad ax marks from the original fisherman builders. The kitchen is thoroughly modern with stainless appliances, solid maple counter tops, and a two level snack bar. The property was completely renovated down to it's bones from 2003 to 2007, using recycled or repurposed materials wherever possible and is now a highly energy efficient home. The walls are adorned with local art and mementos of the great age of commercial fishing and logging here in Grand Marias. The view of the old harbor from the living room and the deck is stunning. There is also a view from the 3rd bedroom deck. Seagulls and fog greet you when you rise. The grounds of the property are planted with a variety of native and boreal flowering plants, flowering shrubs and fruit trees. It is a garden like setting with various perennial, annual, and produce plantings. The waxwings regularly invade the ash trees, along with fiercly dueling ruby throated hummingbirds. Visitors are encouraged to tour the property and observe the goings on in the gardens and the adjacent Boathouse! The Boathouse is an impressive timberframe structure that was built by the current owner as a workshop for building and restoring boats and for teaching classes and other public and private events. Stop in and see what's going on, maybe you will be recruited in to service to help on whatever project is under way! Remember that if you stay 7 nights that the 7th night is free! There are also two additional lodgings available on the property. One is attached to the Fisherman's Cabin and sits above the 3rd bedroom and is called the 'Lighthouse'. The other is the Writer's Cabin and sits next door for your larger gatherings. Put together any combination to accomodate your larger gatherings and receive a group discount. You can get the whole family reunion on one site! Check out 'The Writer's Cabin' (http://www.vrbo.com/452067) and The 'Lighthouse' (VRBO# 473955) for details. We love dogs. Single dogs are allowed if under 40 lbs, clean and house trained and must not be left unnatended and always kept on leash when outside. No dogs under 1 year old. If you are using the automatic booking function it will assess a $30.00 pet fee for one dog. This will cover one dog for 3 nights.
If your stay is longer than 3 nights or if you have more than one dog we will asses an additional $10 per night per dog after the first 3 nights.
If you have any questions please call to discuss your pets before booking. Any dogs larger than 40 lbs, and any dogs more than one must be approved by the owners.
Please give us a call if you have any questions.

Thank you!

                  Owner info

                  Year Purchased: 2003

About the owner: The owners and managers of the Fisherman's Cabin are Todd and Susan Miller. Susan is originally from Duluth Mn and Todd from the Twin Cities. They have sailed the world's oceans together on their 35 foot sloop 'Snow Day', and have now settled down here in Grand Marais since 2003. Todd is a licensed Captain, and served on the local park board for many years. He is also active in community projects with area youth. Susan is the Special Education teacher at the local charter school. Todd's interests include leading a local dance band, building and restoring fun things, messing about in boats, and managing Real Estate. Susans interests include gardening, thrift store exploring, and cooking. They both love to travel and learn.

Why the Owner Chose Grand Marais:
We chose this location because it is very special. We are lifelong Miinnesotans and have been passing through Grand Marais our whole lives. We wanted a home on the North Shore, and we believe that Grand Marais is the jewel of the North Shore. Within Grand Marais we wanted to be close to the action and the water. Although this is a very small town, it has big shoulders when it comes to culture and beauty. We belive our specific location is magical because the big lake cools us in summer and warms us in winter. We never get tired of the many moods of Lake Superior and enjoy watching the lake from this property.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
This is a great location for the summer festivals. Music and art seems to permeate the town and strains of music can be heard most times of the day and in to the evening. Artists are plying their wares in nearly every shop. There is always something interesting going on at the Boathouse next door, and North House Folk School is very close. On stormy nights the breaking waves send a deep rumble through the bedrock.
