Our family stayed a week at the Mountain Fortress. The photographs don't really do the views justice, the views were amazing. Plenty of day trips around to do, and coming "home" to the hot tub was wonderful. The chalet was perfect for us. It was clean and very comfortable. We would love to return!Owner response: Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to submit a review. Your kindness and efforts are very beneficial to our vacation rental. Look forward to having you as a return guest. Mike

My husband and I have just returned home from a 5 night stay at the Mountain Fortress chalet. We've been looking for the "perfect" mountain cabin rental for years and we're happy to say we've finally found it in the Mountain Fortress! The descriptions found here are completely accurate. The chalet is comfortably furnished, well-stocked, and very clean. One thing we've found in the past is that so many of the rental properties don't have anywhere comfortable to sit and relax. Not true here, both the great room and the downstairs game room have comfy sofas, love seats, and chairs. The deck has great seating and stunning views in all directions. The chalet sits high in the mountains, nestled in the pines and aspens. We didn't stray too far afield, but it is close enough to many areas for day trips. We brought our food and the kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to prepare meals. Mike, the property manager, was very responsive to emails and questions. The rental process was easy and everything went smoothly. We will definitely be returning to the Mountain Fortress next year! SMOwner response: Dear Guest, Thank you so much for the kind words. All of our guests have been wonderful but our "Out of State" guests always leave a Special gift with their appreciation of the beauty of Mountain Fortress. Thank you for leaving the property so nice. We very much look forward to having you as a return guest. See you next year! Mike

I'm writing the review after staying for the second time at The Mountain Fortress. Both times we stayed were wonderful. We fit 11 people comfortably into the cabin. It never felt overcrowded. We were even able to use the kitchen and utensils provided to feed everyone. The views are simply amazing. We were able to catch a few amazing sunrises and sunsets and even had a few brief snow showers move through. There are many, many places to explore within an hour of the cabin, so we were never bored. On the days we wanted to simply chill in the cabin, both TV's have a roku box to watch Netflix or Amazon Prime on, and downstairs has darts, a pool table, and a hot tub. I highly recommend to anyone.Owner response: Dear Dylan, Thanks again for choosing the Mountain Fortress for your vacation. Also thanks to Jill and the rest of your group and for leaving the chalet so nice. Hope to see you many times in the future. Mike

My fiancee and I are from Canon City and were looking for a romantic getaway for the weekend to celebrate Valentine's Day and to attend the Cripple Creek Ice Festival. We had been looking for cabins in the area for the occasion and my fiancee especially wanted to stay in a cabin with a hot tub. After looking for several hours on the Internet for an acceptable cabin that was close to Cripple Creek, I came upon The Mountain Fortress cabin. It was spectacular, clean, warm, and very inviting. Although it was just the two of us, it could have easily accommodated 10 people easily and comfortably. The hot tub was the icing on the cake in which we relaxed and enjoyed very much in the evening. The scenery was just beautiful, peaceful, and serene. Directions to the cabin were very clear and easy. We enjoyed our stay very much and will definitely be visiting again in the near future.Owner response: Dear Shaun, Thanks for the kind words. Hope to have you as a return guests! Mike

This place was a great find! We needed a mini vacation and this was perfect. There was plenty to do inside and near the cabin. Mueller state park had great hiking! We went to McGinty's to eat lunch and it was AWESOME. There were only 4 of us who stayed and there was plenty of room. I would stay again!Owner response: Thank you Kim for taking the time to submit review. Hope to have you as a return guest! Mike

My wife and I stayed at Mountain Fortress for a week with 3 other couples. It was easily the best lodging experience I have ever had! The home is extremely clean, well maintained, and gorgeous. The property manager, Mike, makes himself available if you have any questions. We needed help with the internet and one of the heaters, and Mike walked us through everything over the phone, and even called the next morning to make sure things were still going well. We got a little snow while we were there, and someone - presumably Mike - came and plowed the driveway so we could get out if needed. The views from the porch, great room, and loft are even more spectacular than imagined from the description and pictures. The amenities included at Mountain Fortress are great as well. Full access to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hi-Speed WiFi, as well as a pool table, air hockey table, dart board and hot tub offer plenty of entertainment options. The full kitchen and gas barbeque grill provide everything you need for meal preparations. All of the rooms are very nice and the beds are comfortable. The bottom line is that if you are looking for somewhere unique, beautiful, and cozy to stay in Colorado, choose Mountain Fortress. You'll be very satisfied with your stay!Owner response: Dear Stuart, Thank you for submitting such a well written review. I feel your review has expressed the experience that we are trying to provide for our guests. I would like to take credit for the driveway plowing but that task was performed by others. I really hope to have your group as return guests. Please let me know if you have any special accommodations for your return visit. Sincerely, Mike

We searched many properties before we decided on the Mountain Fortress and we were more than pleased with the property. The description was accurate and the property was clean and well maintained. In fact, it was exceptional. Mike was an excellent source of information and assistance any time asked. The Fortress is nestled in among aspens and evergreens with marvelous views in all directions. Pike's Peak is clearly visible from the wrap around deck. The brillance and closeness of the night time stars makes the Fortress "a bit of heaven". The property is easy to find and located so that daily road trips are easily taken. We drove to Maitou Springs, Colorado Springs, Canon City, Divide, Woodlawn Park, and Florissant, to name a few. Some of the things we did were to drive the Phantom Canyon Road to Canon City, rode the Cog railway, toured the Miramont Castle, rode the Royal Gorge train, toured the Mollie Kathleen mine, visited the Hertiage Center, did the Aspen Tour, located the "wild" burros, did the Cripple Creek walk about, and checked casinos. We found Dynamite Dick's to serve large portions of food at a very reasonable price and on top of that, it was delicious. Back at the Fortress we relaxed in the hot tub, played games and watched nature's beautiful sunsets. Great place!! We will recommend it to others and hope to make a return visit! This cabin was perferct for our family get away! The 11 of us stayed 5 nights and cabin was very spacious. We explored alot of Colorado and the cabin was centrally located for our trips to Colorado Springs, 11 Mile Canyon, and Cannon City. We did find time to hike, enjoy the hot tub, and had awesome BBQs on the wrap around deck. Mike was easy to work with even the last minute change in # of people. Directions were great and the cabin easy to find yet provided privacy. We look forward to our next trip to Colorado and staying at the Mountain Fortress again. Ginny Morton.Owner response: Dear Ginny, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experiences at Mountain Fortress. Look forward to having you as a return guest. Mike

We searched for hours to find a great vacation spot for our family (2 Adults and 4 kids). Our criteria was a close drive to Colorado Springs and other nearby attractions, a decent interior, great views and a hot tub. The Mountain Fortress on paper met all of our criteria and the price was great. Although the pictures are nice and very accurate, it is a thousand times better in person. The interior was way better than decent...it was clean, functional and beautiful. The lay out is extremely spacious. The kids had a riot with the air hockey and pool table and just exploring the outdoors. The views...breathtaking, just breathtaking! One clear night we sat under the stars...an amazing experience! The hot tub had a couple issues which we worked around and Michael took care of it. The issues never stopped us from enjoying it. I think the most impressive and unexpected thing was how well the entire place was stocked....everything you could need or want was there! As a fellow Homeaway owner, we were most appreciative of that! We've already recommended it to countless friends, so better reserve it while there is still vacancy! :)Owner response: Dear Guests, Thank you so much for taking the time to provide a detailed review of your experience at Mountain Fortress. Your effort means a great deal to our continued management of the property. We will contunue to provide a vacation setting that will appeal to guests. Mike

Our stay was amazing. The house and property was in pristine condition upon arrival. It was very nice to be able to unwind in the hot tub after the trip in from Texas and wake up to the gorgeous mountain views in the morning. Only suggestion I have is to fix the wicked slant to the pool table. Also one of the main factors with us choosing the property was the fact that pets are allowed.Owner response: Hello Austin, Thanks for taking the time to submit a review. I can see you appreciated the views which is nice to hear others taking in the wonders of our setting. I'm going to have to take some time and address that pool table issue and hopefully shoot a few games! Hope to have you back someday!

About: My name is Dave, I just turned 50, and before I became the 2nd owner of 'The Fortress' in 2003, I lived in Manhattan. I left my position running the news desk for a major news network to write and do freelance tv producing and directing while I worked on my novel. Haven't finished it yet, the views up here were too distracting! :) I lived at 'The Fortress' from June 2003 until I had to return back east to care for my elderly parents in 2008. From March 2008 until January 2012 the place was rented full time, and I decided to make it a vacation rental so I could come back and enjoy it myself. I now reside in Henderson, NV. I am still doing video producing and directing as well as some writing.
Why Cripple Creek:
I chose this as my full time home and was very sad I had to leave. In my opinion, this is the best view/location in the community. My real estate broker took me here in April of 2003 and after 15 minutes on the property, which was a private vacation only home for its previous owners (built in 1999), I decided to make the move and began working on the financing same day!
The Unique Benefits at this Chalet:
The most bang for your buck you will get anywhere for people who want real value in this type of location.
About 250 yards from the back of the house is the border of Mueller State Park. This property includes the great natural beauty of the state park.
I have designed this place to have the best of both worlds. It's comfortable and modern, still with a rustic feel. And it includes modern technology so you can stay in touch with the real world....if you want to.
