You will be welcomed by the sound of the clear rushing waters of the Big and Little Snowbird Creeks as they come together to form the Snowbird River. The Bear’s Den on Big Snowbird Creek has two bedroom and two baths as well as an upper level sleeping loft. The stone fireplace with hardwood floors throughout main level offers a warm place to gather with friends and family. It features large decks hanging over Big Snowbird Creek, a screened in porch, a gazebo and a detached garage for all the toys. This one of a kind cabin is a nature lover’s paradise with tons of outdoor areas along the waters edge including two picnic areas, a fire pit and plenty of open space for fishing. The decor of the cabin is rustic and luxuriously comfortable.
Just a few minutes away is majestic 2,800 acre Lake Santeetlah, located in the Nantahala National Forest. Santeetlah offers over 80 miles of shoreline and 85% is completely updeveloped. Deyton Camp Marina provides our guests a discount on pontoon boats, ski boats, jet skis and fishing boats.
Motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts will enjoy the twists and curves of the Tail of the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway. With paved access directly to the Bear’s Den, there is plenty of parking for cars, bikes and trailers.
Mountain biking can be found at the world class Tsali Recreational Area or a rugged trails close to the property. If hiking something that interests you, there are numerous trails in the Snowbird Backcountry which include the breathtaking waterfalls - Sassafrass Falls, Lower Falls, Middle Falls and Upper Falls, all come from the head waters of Big Snowbird Creek. Four wheeling is popular for many of our guests, there are many trails close to the Bear’s Den including Squally Creek, Little Snowbird trails up to Cold Springs Gap, Buffalo Creek and Huffman’s Creek
Whitewater Rafting down the Nantahala River is also popular for the thrill seekers. For the more experience kayakers and paddler there is always the challenge of the Cheoah with Class 5 rapids.
A must see is Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, one of the last Old Growth Forests left in America. The towering Poplars are about 400 years old and over 20 feet in circumferance. There are hiking trails for every level hiker to enjoy.
Day trips could include visiting the Cherokee Indian Reservation Museums, the theatrical performance "Unto These Hills" and Harrah’s Casino. There is always a trip on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad that features scenic rides or dinner train.
You'll hear the hypnotic sounds of the rapids and be tempted to swim in the calm, cool water. Bring the family for days full of adventure and nights of unsurpassed rest and relaxation.
