Enjoy a relaxing holiday in this beautiful and fully equipped vacation home. Take a meandering walk along the beach, soak up some sun on our south facing property, take a nap in the hammock, or relax in the soaker tub. Take your dinner out to the sundeck, enjoy it inside around the kitchen table, or skip cooking all together and wander over to the Dinghy Dock Pub for some food and entertainment. And the list goes on! The house is suitable for a couple looking for a romantic getaway, or for a family vacation.
On the main floor you will find an open concept kitchen and living area, a full bathroom with shower, a bedroom with a queen size bed and a second bedroom with a single bed. Upstairs is an open loft with a pull out sofa and a second bathroom with a soaker tub. Off of the loft is a balcony with peak-a-boo views of the ocean to the west and south.
The large wrap-around sundeck has plenty of seating, including an outdoor dining table. And under the shade of some arbutus trees in the yard hangs an extra large hammock with room for two.
And if you can tear yourself away from the island for some sightseeing, there is plenty to do only a short distance away. Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park is a beautiful island adjacent to Protection Island. At low tide, you can wade across the channel separating the islands. Or you can connect to the island via passenger ferry. The passenger ferry to Nanaimo drops you off in downtown Nanaimo from where you can walk to the Newcastle Island ferry. Also within walking distance of the Protection Island ferry terminal in Nanaimo are the Port Theatre, the harbourfront seawall, shopping districts, and many restaurants.
Whether you wish to sight-see or stay put, our island home will make a wonderful base for your vacation.

Wonderful place to stay, everything written here is true. It does take a little effort to get to, but that adds to the attraction. The boat to/from dinghy dock pub has set hours, but it seems next to impossible to find them anywhere on the web or even by calling the pub (the message stated hours which didnt include all departure times). But still, this place is great!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2001
About the owner: We moved to Canada from Sweden in 1977, and this vacation home is our little slice of Sweden in Canada. We built it ourselves in 2001, in the Scandinavian summer home style. We poured our blood, sweat and tears into this house and it has been and continues to be a special place for our family. Our oldest daughter got married in one of the parks on Protection Island, with this house as the 'command center'. Our grandchildren also love spending time here.
Why the Owner Chose Nanaimo:
Protection Island is a very special place. Just like many of the Gulf Islands, there is a quietness and a sense of the slowing down of time that happens as soon as you step onto the island. The island is conveniently located next to the city of Nanaimo, which makes it easily accessible, and yet it feels far removed from the city. There is only a passenger ferry to the island, and golf carts outnumber other vehicles on the gravel roads.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We are directly across the street from beach access to both the eastern and western shorelines of the island. At low tide, you can take long walks along the beach finding unique pieces of driftwood and shells along the way. Taking a walk or riding a bike around the island is another great way to see it. The island is small, but with plenty of twists and turns in the roads to explore. Sunsets watched from a log on the western beach are beautiful, and in the summer, the water is inviting.
