For some reason, VRBO has listed this house as a cabin. It is NOT. This small, contemporary home that has many unique touches. It was built in 2007 (I am the first owner), and it has several design features (built after the Susan Susanka architectural philosophy of 'the not too big house') that attracted me to it and which helps reduce its environmental footprint--Energy Star appliances, hot water-on-demand, a very efficient heat pump that quickly heats or cools the home, flooring from sustainable materials. Some of the unique design features are a hand-built, oak spiral staircase, halogen lighting and European bathroom fixtures. A screened-in porch on the first floor expands the first-floor living space, as does the entry deck. Both upstairs bedrooms have private decks. The master bath is ensuite and the second bath has a circular, clear shower. The compact Bosch washer-dryer is located in the second bathroom. Both upstairs bedrooms have cathedral ceilings with ceiling fans.
The first floor combines the living, dining and kitchen area, and a powder room.
This house is one of three units that share a common septic system, but each house is separate--no connecting porches. There is no yard, but the septic/well area is fenced in. The home has city water; outdoor hose. No fish-cleaning table.
The entryway deck was built around an existing tree on the lot. There is room for under-house parking of one car and there is an outdoor shower. An ideal home for one or two couples. One small dog (40 lbs. max) only is welcome with a $50, nonrefundable pet-cleaning fee. This fee is added to the nightly rate according to the season. Tax of 9.75 percent is added for the total rental amount. I do require damage protection, which may or may not be refundable depending on what you choose.
The home rents Saturday to Saturday peak summer season and fall. More flexibility in the winter and spring.
Keywords: House; two stories; newer home built in 2007.

Stayed in this lovely home on Ocracoke last year and have to rave about the house. So cozy, and everything one needs to have a great week. Cute kitchen and lots of private space. Spent lots of time on the screened porch. Owner is very helpful with requests and also has a good knowledge of the island and places to visit. Very clean, and on a nice street and one can walk to town easily. We cannot wait to visit again and will definately stay here. We greatly enjoyed staying at this rental! This newer duplex feels more like a home with beautiful kitchen, living room, outdoor porch area, indoor screened porch, and quiet atmosphere. We loved pedaling around Ocracoke Village and this rental was close to restaurants, shopping and everything. The rental was clean and well kept and the owner helped us get a feel for the island and events. We love Ocracoke and will rent this house again when we return. Fabulous week at the beach!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: I am a retired non-profit arts executive who is a journalist by trade, now involved in the community here as a community volunteer and freelance reporter. I live in a house next to the property.
Why the Owner Chose Ocracoke:
I discovered Ocracoke about 30 years ago and made owning a home here a goal. In 2007 I got my wish when I purchased this newly-built, unique small home. It is within biking and walking distance to the village.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
I love that this home was built to have a low-energy footprint with many 'green' features. The cathedral ceilings in the upstairs bedrooms give them a roomier feel. A skylight is in each upstairs bathroom. When you're outside, you can often hear the distant ocean, and at night, you can actually see the Milky Way among all the stars. The screened-in porch catches breezes all day. This is small, cozy home filled with the art of artist friends from up North and here on the island. I cherish this home and I hope you will enjoy it, too.
