Twelve years ago we visited tico friends who invited us to what the NY Times called the “untamed coast” of Costa Rica. We fell in love with this eclectic Caribbean coast, with its blend of tourists, expats, and long-term resident indigenous and Afro-Caribbean folks.
After bringing university students down for a course in sustainability we bought a piece of this paradise in a Wildlife Refuge and built our house 4 years ago. We enjoy excellent international restaurants, and a culture that is friendly and laid back.
We now relish this special place, the privacy, where we can walk through our own rainforest jungle, take our path to the sandy beach and walk for miles along this almost deserted, palm-tree-lined shore of the Caribbean, observe the wildlife (sloths, howler monkeys, toucans, orapendulas, and more) from our large deck, and relax in the hammock feeling the cool ocean breezes and listening to the pounding of the surf. The house has a master bedroom, a study/w bed, shower, toilet, kitchen, and a large covered deck, all on the upper level, with great views of surrounding canopy. There is WiFi internet and ceiling fans in each room. Need something just ask Henry, our care taker in the lower level unit.
Keywords: In Wildlife Refuge, Upper-level private five-room suite, private path to beach and path through private rainforest, walk to village and restaurants by beach or road.
We can help make your travel from SJO airport to our house easy, pleasant, and quite inexpensive.

I wanted a peaceful place to be on retreat for 2 weeks and Casa deEarlyBirds was simply perfect. Just sitting on the deck is a feast for the senses: colorful exotic plants populate the beautiful gardens; marvelous birdsong melds with the sound of waves; monkeys jump from branch to branch in the canopy of trees. I rented a bicycle and it's an easy ride to other beaches, good local restaurants and nearby grocery shopping. The garden path leads to a long, quiet beach that stretches for miles. Enjoy!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway.

We stayed here for two weeks in late Sept-early Oct and it was fantastic. The house has everything you could ever want. The caretakers who live downstairs were very helpful and friendly to us. We became close friends with them. We can can now say we have extended family in Costa Rica! It's a very short walk (less than a minute) to your own private beach! The surrounding property is your own private jungle also. There are a few places to eat and get groceries in Manzanillo, which is just a short bike ride or walk down the beach. We found that just 10-20 yards off the beach there are fantastic reefs for snorkeling and fishing. Hiking in the Manzanillo refuge was one of my favorite activities. We did a canopy zip line tour and also visited the Sloth Sanctuary. My favorite memories are hanging out on the porch relaxing in the morning and evening. What a wonderful way to live! We will be back and would definitely stay at Casa de Early Birds again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

About the owner: We are retired professors with a passion for nature and local ethnic cultures. We enjoy physical activity such as hiking and biking. We built the house as a special place for us to be in the jungle next to the ocean and be connected to the local community. This area, in particular Manzanillo, is a friendly place where interesting conversations take place at the local cafes and hangouts. It’s a welcoming place where anyone can join the daily community volleyball and/or soccer game on the beach.
Why the Owner Chose Manzanillo:
The magnificent, unspoiled, wildlife refuge. The Afro-Caribbean culture. The international character of the population, many of whom have come here to live and start small businesses. The wonderful climate (daytime highs in the low 80’s and nighttime lows in the low 70’s). The miles of sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Walking to restaurants on the beach and biking to more distant restaurants on the road. English is widely spoken. Variety of services, e.g., home delivery of organic produce and pizza. Car rental pickup and delivery at your door. Public transportation.
