Bicyclists will also find the less-traveled roads in this part of the Island especially appealing.

We were on Lopez for The Retreat. What a wonderful island and the people are so friendly. To be surrounded by such beauty everyday must be a wonderful thing! We mastered the "Lopezian wave" by the time we departed! This home is in a peaceful location in the woods with a peek-a-boo view of the bay from the relaxing master bedroom balcony. We were charmed by all the antique furnishings and finishes. The large open kitchen/dining area was perfect for card games while prepping meals. This location is far enough from the "hustle" of the village yet close enough to enjoy its wonderful restaurants and shops. I would definately stay here again, and bring my grandkids next time.

We stayed over Memorial Day weekend, it was very quiet and serene, really "off the beaten path"! A booklet assembled by the owner with detailed recommendations for beaches, all in walking or short biking distance, was very valuable. The kids were able to discover small islands that are accessible by foot during low tide. The house is great, very comfortable, nice gas stove for cold days. There is a surprisingly well stocked convenience store in biking distance. Great place for a families!

Off the beaten path
Off the beaten path
This is a nice out-of-the-way home on a quiet, wooded lane. Our two kids (ages 2 and 4) really enjoyed the toys in the house and the video collection, and they had a terrific time exploring the different beaches, building a sand castle at Agate Beach, and throwing pebbles into the water. The two closest beaches are within walking distance, even with young kids (about half a mile). Agate Beach is a bit more kid-friendly than Aleck Bay given the amount of rocks and rough terrain at the latter. The owners left a hand-sketched map that helped us to find the right paths, though we did get turned around once and had to take a much longer route back. We stayed 3 nights (in the off season), and $150 seemed a little steep for a cleaning fee, given that we were asked to take our trash and recycling with us, strip the sheets off the beds and carry them to the laundry room, and generally tidy up the place before we left. (BTW, be prepared to pay $20+ at the dump if you can't take your trash all the way home with you.) But we enjoyed the quiet, the lovely woods, and the home's proximity to beaches. The lack of curtains or blinds in the bedroom windows made it difficult for our kids (and us) to sleep once the sun was up (our youngest still takes an afternoon nap), and it wasn't until the 2nd day that we thought to hang towels in the windows to block the sun for the kids. Something in the house (bedclothes? rugs?) was pretty dusty, maybe from disuse in the off season (this was late September). My husband has allergies, so he didn't sleep well. But the beds were comfy and the bathrooms and kitchen were very clean. Not sure if the central heat worked, but the gas fireplace on the main floor was terrific. The house was very close (3- to 4-minute drive) to a general store that has all the staples and a mailbox. Lopez Village (shops, restaurants, library, larger grocery store, another beach) is about a 15-minute drive. Lopez is a very friendly island; both in shops and on the road—most oncoming drivers really do give a little wave hello.

Cozy, Comfortable, Relaxing Stay
Cozy, Comfortable, Relaxing Stay
I heard so many things about the San Juan Islands and finally was able to spend the weekend. The Wren's Nest was a great choice to stay. Close to beaches, gas, convenient store with movie rentals, treats and some groceries. Wren's Nest itself is a gem! The kitchen was great! Cooked every meal in the kitchen and had everything needed, heated floors in the bathroom was a nice surprise, each room was uniquely decorated. When staying at Wren's Nest, you don't feel like you are staying in a "rental" but rather staying at a friend's place. It is extremely well looked after. Thanks for offering such a unique place to stay in the beautiful San Juans!

Great for a family!
Great for a family!
Our family of four just returned from our maiden voyage to Lopez Island, and we highly recommend the Wren's Nest, on the South End of the Island. Our hosts took extra care to assure that our needs were met, their directions & instructions were very clear, and they even checked in prior to arrival and just prior to departure to see that the accomodations met our expectations. The house was perfect for our family of four (but is could certainly accomodate a few more), and there was ample information to help us navigate the island & enjoy our stay to the fullest (description of the property & amenities, clear directions to the property, map of the island & attractions, ferry schedule with quotas, etc.). We loved the "old world" feel of the house (antique furnishings, skeleton keys, clawfoot tub, etc.) & our kids (12 & 7) enjoyed the ecclectic mix of toys and the yard. We highly recommend a trip to the library & to Holly B's (a bakery that we all loved). We also particularly enjoyed Agate Beach and Watmough (bring hiking shoes and a little stamina, but the view is OH SO WORTH IT), though we visited several beaches, all with their own unique charm. In addition, we found that the south end convenience store, Islanddale, was well stocked for our needs. If you, like us, are looking for an escape from the madness of daily life, the Wren's Nest is definitely for you!

Fantastic location for family vacation
Fantastic location for family vacation
We spent a fantastic week on Lopez in the Wrens Nest. The house was perfect for our extended family -- 2 young children and my parents visiting from out of town. It was very clean, and so beautifully decorated, with wonderful touches like the most charming B&B. So much nicer than any generic rental place we'd stayed in before. The kitchen had everything we could want, and we cooked many nice meals and enjoyed them on the deck outside in the evenings. There were lots of DVD for the children and for us to watch as a family. there was a great guestbook with suggestions the beaches to explore that only the locals know about. And we all enjoyed exploring the beaches nearby at MacKaye Harbor, Watmough Bay and Agate Beach. it was just like our summers in Maine only right here in the Pacific Northwest. Highly recommended
