Location: Bryce Resort, Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, USA (In Western Virginia, 110 miles from Washington DC.)

Accommodations:  Condo, 4 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 3 Baths (Sleeps 8)

Keywords:  Condominium

Located high on a hill with unobstructed, sweeping views of the mountains and the valley below,
this large (1200 sq.ft.) four bedroom, three bath condo sleeps one to eight. Tastefully decorated, our top two floors of a stand alone townhouse unit provide an idyllic setting to make your stay in the Shenandoah valley one you will want to repeat.

On the main floor soaring cathederal ceilings over a large living and dining room area and picture windows looking out on the valley give a feeling of openness, with the living room fireplace adding to the ambiance. Sliding doors open to a 10 x 14' balcony that looks down the valley and faces the mornings' rising suns. A fully equipped kitchen adjoins the living room/dining room area.

Our bedroom/bathroom configuration offers privacy for adult and family groups. The main floor MBR has bath (tub/shower combination) ensuite and queen bed. The main floor also has another full bath (shower) and a bed room with double bed. Upstairs is a 3rd full bath (shower) and 2 bedrooms. Upstairs BR #1 has a queen bed and a 2 seat couch and writing desk that offer the opportunity for getaway reading or writing. Upstairs BR # 2 has twin beds in a spacious setting.

All bedrooms have bedside lamps, alarm clock radios, and chests of drawers. The MBR and upstairs BR # 1 have TVs and DVD players. The upstairs bedrooms and the living room area have ceiling fans. The unit is fully carpeted throughout, except for the immediate kithen area.

The kitchen is fully equipped and dishes and tableware are ample. The balcony, fireplace, comfortable seating, and 3 TVs and DVD/VCR players provide lots of at home relaxation and entertainment opportunities.

At home comfort is assured but if one wants to venture out, our location is a tremendous extra dividend. We are just 1.2 miles along the main valley road from the Bryce Lodge and the ski and tubing slopes, golf course, climbing wall, and other Bryce Resort activities.

But many other important conveniences and activities are even closer. A short walk down the hill overlooked from our balcony is an outdoor swimming pool, 2 tennis courts, and a large meadow/playground/picnic area with a creek running through it. In addition to picnic tables and a covered picnic area the playground includes swings, a slide, volley ball court, basketball pad and hoop, and horseshoe pitching pits.

At the end of the playground area is a high earthen dam behind which is Lake Laura, offering opportunities for swimming and canoe rental. The dam also marks the beginning of a hiking trail around Lake Laura, about an hour’s walk at a modest pace.

Also just down the hill – an easy walk down, a bit more strenuous on the way back – are the post office and the grocery/general store. We always forget to bring something on our stays so one or more daily trips to the store seem inevitable, including picking up the daily paper, milk, a cup of coffee, or a deli sandwich.

Two of the three restaurants in Basye – both full service, with bars --are also just down the hill and in summertime the ice cream wagon is parked close to the grocery store. Across the street from the grocery is the golf driving range. The miniature golf course has recently relocated the the main lodge area, just over a mile away.

The surrounding towns offer a number of excellent restaurants, many with prices that are modest compared to the DC area. Antiquing and flea market opportunities also abound.

There are many sightseeing opportunities, including numerous caves, historic sites, and the "Skyline Drive" in the nearby Shenandoah National Park.

One of our favorite things to do however, is simply to drive around on the back country roads around Basye with a detailed map of Virginia in hand. Perhaps reflecting our rural up-bringings -- Allen in South Dakota, Pat in Suffolk, England – we find watching the farmhouses, barns, meadows and haystacks roll by relaxing and enjoyable.

Our grandchildren – and their grandparents – also enjoy ten pins bowling at the historic Shenandoah Bowling Lanes in Mt. Jackson. Ten pins bowling, a smaller version of the usual bowling lanes, gives the smaller chilren an opportunity to participate and the pizza and snacks are good and priced right. Call for lane availability.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1993

Allen and Pat Lenz have lived in Reston, VA since 1971, when Allen completed his career as a US Navy Supply Corps officer with an assignment at the White House. He retired in 1974 and then spent 14 years in the Senior Executive Service at the Commerce Department, working on international trade issues. After retirement from Commerce he was for 10 years the Chief Economist for a large trade association, followed by a couple of years consulting for Congressional Commissions. He now spends a bit of time offering minor assistance to Pat’s spring-to-fall efforts to perfect her lakeside garden. Since 1993 our “Bryce Hill” condo has been a place we – and our children and grandchildren – go to relax and do fun and interesting things.

Why the Owner Chose Bryce Resort

We selected Bryce/Basye as our get-away sanctuary after a lot of searching in all directions from Reston. We wanted something within 2 hours of our Reston home base. Bryce easily fits that measure as road improvements (VA 28 and US 66) have more than kept pace with traffic growth.

Equally important, we never tire of the scenery on the drive to Bryce Resort. Once one passes Manassas on US 66 one is out in the country and the views are great. And we always take Rt. 42 south from Woodstock because much of the road is atop a ridge, with spectacular views of the valley below on both sides.

We have owned our “Bryce Hill” condo since 1993. Earlier, we owned a chalet on a hillside in Bryce surrounded by woods. But after several years we were attracted to our "Hill" condo by its open view, extremely convenient but quiet location, and by the maintenance and other services performed by our Bryce Hill Townhouse Condominium Association and its Management group.

The Unique Benefits of this Condo

We think our combination of ambiance, comfort and location is hard to match for groups up to 8 persons. Four BR, 3 baths, cathedral ceilings, fireplace, excellent decor and great views, all within walking distance of 2 restaurants, the general store, outdoor swimming pool, playground, lake, golf driving range, and the beginning of a hiking trail around the lake make it attractive and easy to do nothing or to be active.
